OPUS ONE SHOCKS FOLLOWERS OF FORM

Trainer Suraj Shaw leading Opus One (N Arvind Kumar Up), winner of The S V Subramaniam Memorial Trophy

Form again played traunt and the followers of form lost out big. Five rank outsiders including the ten to one shot Opus One from Suraj Shaw's yard hit the punters hard. The grey ignored in the betting ring in the SV Subramaniam Memorial Trophy, the plum event, produced a winning gallop in the hands of Arvind Kumar to peg back the belated effort of the second in demand at the betting ring, Drisana from the stables of Jaishankar Pillay. The favourite Gold Ride from Ramanathan's yard was  tipped to record her second straight success, but the public choice piloted by Farid Ansari found the going tough and had to rest content with the third spot.

Chief Admiral from trainer B Suresh's yard was another, who failed in his mission to provide an encore, finishing second behind another lesser fancied winner Klimt from the stables of Bobby in the Ranibennur Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner, who in his last essay dead-heated with Red Falcon over a distance of seven furlongs, chalked out his second straight success, taking charge approaching the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. The topweighted D Gold Star finished third ahead of Vishwas.

The Bobby schooled Cloudy Hills on the strength of her two consistent efforts was fancied most in the concluding event, the upper division of the Goa Plate, but the overwhelming favourite partnered by apprentice jockey Vishal met a tartar in Dear Lady, who hammered the last nail in the coffin, while sending out a message that one needs to exercise caution and wait for the right opportunity to put out a bet rather than placing bets without a clue. Lime Light partnered by Ankit Pal managed to save money in place, while the Jaishankar Pillay-trained Selma after being favourably placed at the top of the straight lacked the gas in the tank to stay in connection and eventually finished a tame fifth.

The lower division of the event produced another shock result, unfancied Star Of Light from Sebastian's yard edging out lesser fancied King Scarface close home. Nozomi from Suraj Shaw's yard garnered  the maximum support, but she found the first two too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot. Teresa from Pillay's yard produced an improved effort to complete the frame and it will pay to keep an eye on this filly when saddled next.

The Zulquarnain-trained Habibti was another smart last start winner, who failed to come good. Competing in the upper division of the Kapila Plate, the public choice partnered again by the in-form Ashhad Asbar, after jumping out well from the outside draw (12),  hit the front  and called the shots for most part of the sprint trip before he shot his bolt when the race came on a boil and finished down the field much to the disappointment of her supporters who had strongly fancied her to score in this moderate set. The Gnanashekat-trained Ladylion was also fancied sweetly and the five-year-old mare piloted by Vaibhav did produce her best, but that was just not good enough on this day to alter the result. Miraculous Girl, who let down large following on the opening day finished a creditable third and it will pay to support this Ranjeet ward next time out.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the overwhelming favourite Windborne from trainer Vinesh Naik's yard. Leading pro Antony Raj pushed the public choice to the front soon after the dozen runners came under the starter's flag and the judiciously prepared mare showed a clean pair of heels, romping home without extending herself. Windborne on the strength of this impressive effort is set to provide an encore, while the runner-up Biometric from the stables of Rakesh should earn his cornbill in the weeks ahead.

The Pillay camp fancied Gimme to come out on top in the Alberetto Plate run over a mile and the favourite piloted by Anil Baaandal justified the support of his supporters powering home in convincing fashion. Following the facile win, the Pillay trainee had to win again in the Stewards room following an objection lodged by Koshi Kumar, the rider of the runner-up Alluring Beauty. Koshi contested that the winner had bumped his mount and taken his ground in the final furlong and that cost him the race. It was clear that Gimme did brush Alluring Beauty while powering home, but that was not bad enough to reverse the verdict and considering the fact that the winner was travelling better and was getting stronger at the finish, the Stewards rightly overruled the protest to the delight of the railbirds, who had pinned their hopes on the Pillay ward to earn his winning bracket in this set.

After he finished a game third on his debut, Pilot Officer from Saddam Iqbal's yard was fancied most in the opening event run over a sprint and the on-money favourite provided jockey Nikhil an arm-chair ride to success, making every post a winning one without breaking a sweat. The Arvind-trained Air Bender followed the public rage home ahead of The Killar, while Tejash from Mandanna's yard looks a ordinary youngster, who will struggle to shed her maiden status this season.
