By Usman Rangila | 28 Jun 2026 | MUMBAI
Veteran trainer SS Shah
Former veteran horse-trainer SS Shah, fondly known as “Syedbhai” in racing circles, passed away today in a Pune hospital at the age of 87, bringing to a close an illustrious career that spanned more than five decades. One of the most respected and honest professionals in Indian horse racing, Shah leaves behind a legacy of nearly 1,000 winners, including three Indian Derby triumphs with Mansoor (1973), Hotstepper (2008) and Antonios (2009) and multiple other classic winners.
The younger brother of the late trainer SM Shah, he was admired not only for his success in the highly-competitive profession, but also for the integrity and dignity with which he conducted himself throughout his life in the sport.
Shah served Indian racing with devotion, guiding both elite and modest owners to memorable victories while earning the affection and respect of peers across the fraternity.
Indiarace.com pays heartfelt tribute to a remarkable horseman whose contribution to the sport was rare, enduring and deeply valued. His passing away marks the end of an era, but his legacy will remain etched in the history of Indian racing.
