EFFICACY WINS SUMMER MILLION IN STYLE

Trainer Ranjeet Shinde leading Efficacy (Shreyas Singh up), winner of The Mysore Summer Million

It's not always that the punters make money when favourites win. A majority of railbirds post many credit entries in their balance sheets on days when a good number of well fancied second choices and a couple of king-sized gambles succeed. This is exactly what happened on Wednesday and the punters simply loved it. Second in demand at the betting ring, the Bengaluru raider Efficacy from the stables of Sulaiman Attaollahi reigned supreme in the Mysore Summer Million run over a distance of seven furlongs, Shreyas Singh, who partnered Efficacy in his last success at this centre again produced a stellar effort on the winner, making it a start to finish affair. The overwhelming favourite Echoes Of Time from trainer Aravind Ganapathy's yard partnered by Trevor found the going tough and eventually finished a tame third behind the runner-up Crown Drive from local trainer B Suresh's yard.

Next another well fancied second choice Gold Kite from Aditya's yard, confidently piloted by the promising five-kilo claimer Mohd. Talib proved too good in the Paschimavahini Plate run over a sprint. The speedy customer produced a good turn of foot at the top of the straight to assume command before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. The Ramanathan schooled Gold Ride, who garnered the maximum support proved no match to the smart winner, who appears in good nick and is tipped to score again when saddled next. Constant Variable after a couple of below par efforts appears to have regained the desired form and fitness, finishing a creditable third and it will pay to support this Fahad Khan trainee if his connections chose to race him on the concluding day of the season.

The Mandanna-trained Silver Quest was another well fancied second favourite, who bolted in to the delight of her supporters in the concluding event, the Varanasi Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner piloted by another five-kilo claimer Jitendra Singh showed a clean pair of heels to her 11 rivals winning by a widening margin of six lengths despite drifting out alarmingly in the straight and in fact racing on the sand track in the final 50 metres. This was Silver Quest's third straight success this season and all credit to Mandanna who it must be mentioned has played a stellar role to help the in-form grey stay on top of her game all through the season. Lesser fancied Nevada Gold followed the winner ahead of Cloudy Hills, while the favourite Doctor Dolly, it was clear needed this run after the six-month long lay-off.

Earlier, the Sulaiman-trained Theos justified his top billing in the MRC Charitable Trust Trophy run over the gruelling 2000 metres trip. The winner, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring seized the initiative the moment the race came on a boil, easily pegging back the challenge of the local mainhope Star Of Light. Royal Fashion from the stables of Himanshu did well to save money in place and on the strength of this suggestive effort is likely to earn her cornbill in the forthcoming regular Mysore season.

The Ramanathan camp fancied Bold Show strongly despite the bad draw (12) in the upper division of the Ashwajaya Plate and the topweighted contestant in no spot of bother zipped to the front from the wide outside draw the moment the dozen runners came under the starter's flag and soon it was all over bar the shouting, the Ramanathan ward in the hands of Abishek Matre powering home to the joy of his supporters. Lesser fancied Habibti who followed Windborne home in her last essay again found one better, while the Jaishanker Pillay schooled Sapient, quietly fancied at end, backed down from (5/1) to (7/2) failed to make an impression and finished down the field.

The lower division of the event saw trainer Uthaiah pull off a successful coup on Marzgovel. Slammed down from (2/1) to (80/100), Marzgovel donkey-licked his 11 rivals, cantering home without really extending himself by a margin of six lengths. Walter as luck would have it again found one better, second thrice from as many starts this season and hopefully he may be rewarded for his consistency in the main season.

The Saddam Iqbal-trained Pilot Officer and Kallania from the stables of Yogesh were the two others who entered the winners' circle. The former coming up tops in the opener and Kallania a five to one shot edging out Armament in a thriller in the Manasarovara Plate run over a mile.
