Fly By Wire (Black Cash-Fashion Graduate) picked up acceleration at the right juncture to lift the Mysore Race Club Cup, a race for horses in the highest category, on Monday at Hyderabad. Of the nine runners, the ten-year-old Coral Gables, who had finished an impressive second behind Kohinoor Wish over a similar seven furlong trip, was sent into the race as ‘on-money’ favourite. The ten-year-old still has the zest for racing and was widely expected to come up triumphs. Going into the race, Caligatae got to the front with Mission Chief in close attendance and Fly By Wire tracking them closely in third.

Coral Gables was not being put to pressure early on, racing in about sixth position, as the field started to take the final bend. On the straight, Mission Chief made the first move to take charge and P.S. Chouhan had also started to ride out Fly By Wire. Goral Gables came from behind, covering ground rapidly, in the last 100 metres but Fly By Wire had by then shot ahead and the ten-year-old Coral Gables ended up a close second. Mission Chief finished third. Tom Maclaughlin rode Anupam Sharma-trained Young Soldier (Hymn-Spirit Of Patxi) to a gutsy win in the Dr. S.R. Captain Memorial Cup.

Walnut Creek had surged ahead of Fabulous Crown on top of the straight and the rider, S. John was trying his best to keep him going. Young Soldier rallied with a sustained run to get the better of Walnut Creek, by three parts of a length. Commanding Heights and Metaforce covered many lengths on the straight but failed to get to the duo in front and finished third and fourth respectively. Chouhan had an easy ride on Deshmukh-trained Ashleen State (Hurricane State-Ashleen) in the higher division of The Classic Style Plate. Jumping out from nine draw, Chouhan guided Ashleen State quickly, to take the inner rails, in a fast pace and stepped on the throttle to clock a smart timing.

My Tyson was in chase throughout and took the runner-up berth. Donald Netto-trained Alexander Square (Ajaad-Celeste) lifted the lower division, in a timing marginally slower than that of Ashleen State. The two were the only first favourites to oblige in a card of eight races. True Future moved in late to take the second spot behind Alexander Square. The opening race of the day, The Palampet Cup, run over a distance of about 2,200 metres, witnessed a close finish. Heart N Soul (Epicentre-Chepstow) went to the front from the start with the other five following. While Heart N Soul went ahead in a crawling pace, Chouhan, on the piping hot favourite Askioz preferred to follow the leader and that was probably his undoing as he failed to raise the gallop required when asked for on the straight. However, with strong riding, Askioz started to close the gap but fell short by the proverbial whisker.

The Royal Tern Plate, for two-year-old maiden Horses, was divided into two races. Golden Palace (Quest Star-Groves Iesis) shed his maiden ranks in the lower division. The public choice, Talking Picture, set out in front but was no match when John brought Golden Palace alongside with a challenge. Star Striker picked up speed late to finish second, ahead of the tiring Talking Picture. Its My Crown was withdrawn before the start of the race. Prasad Raju’s Celandine (Alnasr Alwasheek-Armetta) lifted the higher division, with P.B. Beggy astride. Yours Truly along the rails, Speed Striker on the far side and Celandine in-between were the first to show up on the straight.

Celandine showed a clean pair of heels, when asked for an effort by Beggy and literarily ran away from the others. Yours Truly held on to the second spot, ahead of the fast finishing Ponte Verdi. Shehzad Abbas’s Traxana (Libor-Awe Inspiring) surprised everyone, running away with The Solitaire Plate. Pygmallion led from the start and weakened near the distance post. Traxana moved with telling strides from the rear and swept past the field to score an eight-length victory. Easy Strides barely managed to take the second spot.
