BISHOP RECORDS AN ENCORE IN THE NK PUDUMJEE SALVER
By Usman Rangila | 11 Oct 2026 | PUNE
Mrs Liane Luthria and trainer P Shroff leading Bishop (Vivek G up), winner of The N. K. Pudumjee Salver
Following his Pune Derby success earlier, jockey Vivek G. was still riding high on adrenaline and went on to steer Bishop to a confident victory over favourite Giacomo before completing an encore in the NK Pudumjee Salver. Pesi Shroff-saddled Bishop slipped into the lead as soon as the gates flew open and showed the way to the field with Tyrannus and Earth in close attendance. Bishop came first into the straight and, meanwhile, A. Sandesh brought Giacomo to the fore at the final turn and went hunting for the leader. However, Vivek kept the pressure intact on Bishop (Deauville – Winds of Fortune), who held on gallantly, staving off the fast-finishing Giacomo’s threat. Runner-up Giacomo, who was returning to competitive racing after a long gap, was clearly in need of this run. Earth stayed in third ahead of Zafferano.
The Shazaan Shah-schooled speedy mare Credence jumped out smartly from the gates to hit the front and showed a clean pair of heels to her five rivals in the Sir Sultan Chinoy Trophy, a six-furlong sprint event. The odds-on favourite Fourth Wing, ridden by Trevor Patel, raced close behind Credence along with Your Unforgettable, but failed to quicken in the straight. Credence (Excellent Art – Maleficent) extended her lead when apprentice S. Siddharth applied pressure and drew away to register her ninth career success. Your Unforgettable improved late to finish second, while Market King ran third after Fourth Wing threw in the towel.
The even-money favourite Miami Vice from trainer Mansingh Jadhav’s yard was also taken on a successful wire-to-wire mission by NS Parmar and the filly simply cantered home, making every post of the seven-furlong trip Jimmy Umrigar Trophy (Div-II) a winning one. After entering the home stretch with Styx in tow, Miami Vice (Starspangledbanner – Darinja) increased the tempo and left her rivals stranded behind. After racing in the rear, El Nino found his rhythm in the straight and improved quite late to beat Styx for second place. G Valentino also covered good ground towards the end to fill the fourth slot.
Benefiting immensely from the run he had earlier this season, Adhirajsingh Jodha-groomed Sir Churchill graduated from the maiden ranks with a fluent victory in the Jimmy Umrigar Trophy (Div-I). The eight-horse field was reduced to six after Field of Gold and Minimus played up at the gates and were declared non-starters. When the starter’s flag came down, Sir Churchill stormed into the lead and was never headed by any of his rivals thereafter. The on-money favourite Taaqath, who ended runner-up, and the other contestants were outpaced by the winner, who skipped away for a two-length victory. Acrobatic and Sky Bound followed them home.
The start-to-finish tactics adopted by Marius also paid off as the Aman Hussain-trained gelding upset the fancied runners in the Pune Police Commissioner’s Trophy. Marius showed the way to Sukoon and Avante in the early stages and led them into the straight with favourite Paloma also trying to make headway a few lengths behind. Sensing the danger approaching from behind, SG Prasad-astride Marius (Deauville – Martini) used his whip freely to keep his mount on course and just about managed to survive the onslaught of Avante by a neck. Paloma rallied when it was too late and finished third ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody.
The JM Shah, CM Shah & KM Shah Trophy, run over a mile-and-a-half, saw Karthik Ganapathy-saddled Caccini romp home, easily beating her nearest rival Little John. Merchant of Venice made the initial running while both Little John and Caccini were content to lie at the back of the five-horse field. The long lead established by him was cut down drastically by the Merchant of Venice as he brought his rivals into the straight and it was Akshay Kumar-ridden Little John who challenged the leader and gained the upper hand just over a furlong from the post. However, Sandesh timed his challenge to perfection and brought Caccini (Leitir Mor – Forever Glory) with a terrific run down the straight and swept past Little John in the last hundred metres. Merchant of Venice ran third ahead of Land of Plenty.
The Vinayak Salver, Sunday’s concluding event, was a virtual gift for the Faisal Abbas trainee Bravo Zulu and the shortest priced runner of the day did not falter. Apprentice Ramswarup spurred Bravo Zulu (Leitir Mor – Favourite Royal) established an uncontested lead right from the start and won untroubled over the six-furlong journey. Ashwa Ankara, Red Merlot, and Hola Amigo followed the winner home in that order.
