Trainer K Somashekar leading Grizzly (Rafique Sk up), winner of The A.R.Subramanya Raj Urs Memorial Trophy
It was a mixed bag and yet a majority of punters returned home satisfied with the many credit entries they posted in their balance sheets on the final day before the Derby and Invitation Cup extravaganza next week-end.
Fresh from his success last week, the Somashekar-trained Grizzly recorded his second straight success, making every post a winning one in the AR Subramanya Raj Urs Memorial Trophy run over a sprint. Rafique pushed the Somashekar ward to the front soon after the eight runners came under the starter's flag and Grizzly never let the initiative slip, comfortably sprinting home ahead of the public choice Vibrant Queen and the second in demand at the betting ring Mystikos. The third placed runner, it is clear is not best suited for six furlongs trip and the day his connections choose to test him over seven furlongs and beyond, Mystikos will certainly bring the smile back on the face of her supporters, who lost out big fancying the Purshotham trainee twice over six furlongs.
A facile last start winner, Star Of Light from Sebastian's yard, like Grizzly recorded his second straight success this season, coming up tops in the Round Table India Cup run over a mile. Antony Raj, who recorded a fine treble on Thursday, confidently partnered the in-form Sebastian ward who stamped his authority without really extending himself. The Gnanashekar schooled Lords Grace, twice winner from his three starts this season was strongly tipped by the Gnanashekar camp to deliver the knock-out blow to the public choice, backed down from (13/4) to (18/10), but up against a rival in top form, Lords Grace found the going tough and had to rest content with the runner-up berth.
The Ladies Circle India Cup, split into two divisions, produced two shock results. Rank outsider from leading trainer Rakesh's yard showed a clean pair of heels to his 10 rivals including the piping hot favourite Inicio, who continues to take good money down the drain. The Neil Devaney ward partnered by RN Darshan was favourably placed early on in the race before he was bumped and lost position from which he never recovered and at the end failed to even save money in place. Shamsheer piloted by Farid Ansari burst through the pack to assume command approaching the distance post and then sailed through to put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Second in demand at the betting ring, the Mohd.Sajid-trained Carter followed the smart winner home ahead of the topweighted Elveden.
The lower division of the event saw the lesser fancied LG's Star from trainer Lokanath Gowda's yard prove too good, outclassing her 10 rivals including the heavily backed Marshmallow, who surprisingly ran out of gas at the top of the straight and eventually finished down the field. The eight to one chance Vafadar piloted by Sameer Qureshi at one stage looked good to score, but the moment, Vinod Shinde setalight the Lokanath ward, it was all over bar the shouting.
The concluding event, the upper division of the Mount Everest Plate run over a sprint produced another surprise result, the ten to one long shot Moonlight Scotch from Sebastian's yard brilliantly piloted by Inayat making it a start to finish affair. Amber Storm, another friendless contestant followed Moonlight Scotch home ahead of One Diamond, while the strongly supported favourite Excellent Warrior after tracking the winner for most part of the sprint trip retired when the race came on a boil and eventually failed to find a place on the board.
The lower division of the event was claimed by the well supported Cauvery from the stables of Arvind. The even-money favourite in the hands of five-kilo claimer Asirvatham hit the front from the word go and never looked back, romping home a deserving winner. Lesser fancied Crazy Love gained the runner-up berth ahead of Mighty Hero who caught the eye while finishing a suggestive third and is one for the notebook.
The Lokanath Gowda-trained Legendary Impact making her maiden appearance this season after a couple of satisfactory efforts in the Bangalore summer season found the going easy against mediocre opposition and posted a long overdue victory. The moody Meghann from the stables of Warren Singh was in a mood to gallop and the mare did well to gain the runner-up berth, while Double Scotch fancied most in place by the Shoban Babu camp didn't disappoint, finishing a creditable third in the hands of veteran jockey Imran Chisty.
