Mr Geoffrey B Nagpal & Mr Maloji Bhosale leading Lady Scarlet (Anotny Raj S up), winner of The Mayor Baburao Sanas Memorial Million powered by SRS Group
Lady Scarlet, the shortest-priced runner on Sunday, gave no anxious moments to her admirers as she made short work of her rivals, including Zayyan, in the Mayor Baburao Sanas Memorial Million powered by the SRS Group. Vivek G.-partnered Zayyan from Pesi Shroff’s stables hit the front when the four-horse field started the six-furlong journey with Antony Raj holding back Lady Scarlet, who raced keenly behind the leader. Zayyan led till the final furlong where Lady Scarlet overhauled him and cantered away for an effortless win. Red Lightning took the runner-up position as Zayyan shortened his strides to be third, while Ashwa Tazbeez trailed throughout.
Adhirajsingh saddled another winner an hour later when Savage Peacock scored an emphatic win beating favourite Britannia in the Dancing Phoenix Plate. Magical Star stormed into the lead shortly after the start and was chased by A. Sandesh-ridden Savage Peacock, who raced handily behind. Bezalel and Brasilier raced close behind, while favourite Britannia was slow into her stride and raced in the rear. As the field swung into the home stretch, Sandesh released the brakes on Savage Peacock (Arazan – Eminence Grise), who assumed command and went on to record his maiden success. Britannia manoeuvred her way after improving in the straight but found the winner too good. Bezalel ran third in a close finish involving Black Thunder and Rainbow Connection.
Rosario registered an encore making every post of the mile-and-a-quarter journey for the Great Secret Plate a winning one. Apprentice S. Siddharth did not hesitate to hit the front with the Shroff trainee as the three runners raced behind in single file. Neeraj Rawal made his move astride Little John, the second favourite, on entering the straight to challenge the leader. However, Rosario (Western Aristocrat – Satellite) was in no mood to relent and stretched out well for a comfortable victory. Exuma and Bhairava trailed behind after being prominent till the closing stages of the race.
Lumineer, the three-year-old filly from trainer Malesh Narredu’s string, was backed to the exclusion of her six rivals in the Secret Romeo Plate. However, Yash Narredu-driven Lumineer caught a tartar in Aman Hussain’s ward Muqaddar. Lumineer was off to a fluent start from the barriers and led the field while Jumanah travelled close on the heels of the leader, with Muqaddar tracking them towards the inner rails. The on-money favourite maintained her lead after entering the straight but came under pressure from both Jumanah and Muqaddar. As Lumineer fought for survival, SG Prasad switched lanes with Muqaddar (Leitir Mor – Lovely Kiss) following which, the bay gelding put in a gallant effort to snatch the lead from the favourite in the shadow of the winning post. A length-and-a-quarter separated runner-up Lumineer from the winner, while Jumanah finished third, a neck ahead of Tempo.
A confident piece of riding from S. Siddharth astride Zephyr enabled him to outwit Trevor Patel-driven Appalachian in the Dakshin Maharashtra & Goa Sub-Area Trophy. After being in close attendance alongside Golden Heart as Phantasmique showed the way to the field, Siddharth launched his bid astride PS Chouhan-schooled Zephyr when the heads turned for home. Zephyr gained a slender lead after overtaking Phantasmique and Golden Heart but found Appalachian getting close. Trevor went all out on Appalachian and almost succeeded, but Zephyr (Phoenix Tower – Hostess) escaped his clutches and lasted out to win by a short head. Golden Heart and Regal Warrior followed them home.
Chouhan, the trainer in absentia, achieved a back-to-back double when lesser-fancied Tranquila surprised the experienced and fancied lot in the Regal Equity Plate. Rafael gave a speedy display to seize the initiative ahead of Moonlight Kiss and Viennoise, while Tranquila was in close contention. Sandesh spurred Rafael to gain the advantage and seemed to have reached the comfort zone when Neeraj Rawal asked Tranquila for an effort. Tranquila (Saamidd – Imperial Treasure) moved with resolute strides and nailed the leader in the final few strides. Majestic Warrior finished third, while Viennoise ran fourth. Moonlight Kiss suddenly lost pace in the home stretch to run sixth.
Following her failed mission in the SA Poonawalla Million won by Jaandaar last month, Imtiaz Sait-mentored Minari resumed her campaign with a stylish victory in the Alexandress Plate. Minari lay unconcerned in the rear as American Eagle went at a fast clip with Alpine Star, Diego Garcia, and Queen of Beauties following her in that order. American Eagle shortened her strides and surrendered to Diego Garcia in the straight while Minari was brought wide into the home stretch by Akshay Kumar. Before Diego Garcia could consolidate his lead, Minari (Roderic O’Connor – Free Gold) came with a blazing run in the final furlong to go surging clear of the field. Diego Garcia took the second spot, while Queen of Beauties ran third. Rambler beat both Ashwa Gypsy and American Eagle for the fourth place.
S. Waheed-groomed Beyond Stars, who was running on relegation and entrusted to Sandesh, justified the favouritism with an easy win in the Nationalistic Plate, the day’s curtain-raiser. Beyond Stars tracked leader Okinayume soon after the gates opened for the mile journey and challenged him as soon as the field straightened for home. It took some vigorous riding from Sandesh to get Beyond Stars (Arazan – Retained) to overhaul Okinayume, who refused to succumb easily to the winner’s onslaught. Baleno improved late to be third ahead of Marlboro Man.
