TRAGEDY STRIKES MALAKPET ON THE GOLCONDA ST. LEGER DAY
By Usman Rangila | 19 Oct 2026 | HYDERABAD
Arrived (P Trevor up), winner of the Golconda St. Leger (Gr.2)
The four-year-old colt Arrived accomplished a start-to-finish mission to lift the Golconda St. Leger (Gr.2), the last classic of the monsoon season. Arrived had achieved the sixth success from eleven starts in a career spanning just over a year, which eventually turned out to be his swan song. The celebrations of the chestnut colt’s victory were short-lived as Arrived collapsed seconds after crossing the winning line. The winner apparently suffered a massive cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite receiving medical aid. Trevor Patel astride Adhirajsingh Jodha-trained Arrived (Deauville – Transformation) decided to make his own running over the mile-and-three-quarter trip and held on gallantly to win by just under a length from Suraj Narredu-ridden Gold Empire, who made slow but steady progress to challenge the winner in the dying moments of the race. Earlier, Arrived bowled along merrily in the front after crossing the winning post for the first time with Superstar in pursuit and the other five runners headed by Dapper Look following them. Gold Empire, after travelling in the rear until approaching the final turn, made a steady forward move. Meanwhile, Trevor exerted pressure on Arrived soon after the heads turned for home, asking for perseverance from his mount. Arrived gave a gutsy response by going full throttle to stride past the winning line even as Gold Empire found his rhythm in the last hundred metres and came charging at the winner. Superstar and High Command ran third and fourth, while the rest were outclassed.
Favourite NRI Triple Power ran true to form when recording her fifth career win in the Sandown Park Plate, a seven-furlong contest. After being ridden off the pace by Akshay as Star Forever showed the way to the closely-bunched field of seven contestants, Donald Netto-schooled NRI Triple Power produced her trademark turn of foot in the straight to collar Black Onyx about a furlong away from the wire. Once she gained the upper hand, NRI Triple Power (Gusto – Ascension) cruised away for an authoritative win over Black Onyx, Decoy, and Sugar. Knight Regent dropped out of contention at the bend and finished a bad last.
The day did not start off well for the punters as hot favourite Costa Mesa from KSV Prasad Raju’s barn ran a dismal third in the Nijinsky Plate (Div-I). Starlight Dancer showed plenty of speed to take charge of the running and showed the way to Costa Mesa and Wildstar in the initial stages of the six-furlong sprint. As Akshay Kumar-partnered Costa Mesa refused to put his best foot forward, it was Wildstar who challenged Starlight Dancer close home. However, it was HM Akshay-ridden Rajendra from trainer S. Sreekanth’s string who came like a bolt from the blue to fly past Wildstar and register a two-length upset win. Costa Mesa laboured hard to beat Starlight Dancer for third.
Sreekanth achieved a double when Ojas Maximus completed a hat-trick in the Kinnerasani Trophy. Akshay hit the front with Ojas Maximus (Well Done Fox – Szable) when the starter’s flag came down and won as he liked all the way home. Runner-up Dubai Touch was in futile chase throughout while second-in-demand Sharanga ran gingerly to finish third ahead of Miss Smiley Angel, who raced prominently alongside the front-running pair till then.
A. Imran Khan-trained Emperor’s Charm obliged as a well-fancied favourite in the SS Cardmaster Memorial Trophy but not before Trevor deployed all his skills to snuff out December Rain’s belligerence at the finish. Earlier, Great Giver sprinted ahead of Una Paloma Blanca and December Rain, who both caught up with him in the last furlong and a half to fight a pitched battle. Emperor’s Charm too was hard-ridden as he inched closer to the leaders. Mohit Singh-ridden December Rain had the upper hand after the three runners rolled on to each other, the main culprit being Surya Prakash-piloted Una Paloma Blanca, and worst affected of them all was Great Giver, who was squeezed out of contention. Meanwhile, Trevor got Emperor’s Charm (Chinese Whisper – So Charm) to spring forth and succeeded in beating December Rain in the shadow of the winning post. Una Paloma Blanca finished third ahead of Great Giver, whose rider lodged an unsuccessful objection against the runner-up.
There was another mishap in the last race of the day involving the filly Konaseema, who came a cropper a few seconds after jumping out of the gates when travelling close on the heels of eventual winner Farsiris. The accident looked serious as the newly licensed apprentice rider Vikram Singh was thrown off his seat, a horrifying sight to look at during the race. Meanwhile, Miri, Farsiris, and Sporting Touch, the three front-runners, continued their journey ahead. On entering the straight, apprentice Sonu Kumar urged MF Ali Khan-groomed Farsiris to head the field and the filly, despite veering out in the straight, landed a well-disguised gamble for her connections, probably recouping the losses suffered on See My Attitude on Saturday. Farsiris (Arazan – Powerhaus) won easily from Night Whisper, who received slight interference from the winner when making her bid. Miri finished third ahead of Bodhi. It remains to be ascertained if anything was amiss with favourite Aquatone as Trevor was unable to ride out his mount and finished sixth.
