Our Little Savage Shines on a Dull Day

On a grey and wet afternoon, it was Our Little Savage who brightened the atmosphere for his connections and ran away with the Bangalore Veterinary College Golden Jubilee Trophy. In this mile event for horses in class II, Western Command was the raging hot favourite and looked the part in the parade ring. Padmanabhan has brought about a transformation in this gelding after his last run earlier in the season, and he was seen sporting a wonderful coat. Prakash-ridden South Star was the next in demand with the bookmakers. It was Our Little Savage with the in-form jockey Gnaneshwar in the saddle, who was pushed to make the early running from Charlie Brown, Olivia Valere, South Star and Swift Fire. Daniel Grant decided to settle the favourite a couple of lengths behind the front group, as a result of which he was forced to come widest of all into the straight. It took a while before he got into some sort of rhythm, by which time Our Little Savage and Gnaneshwar were in sight of the winning post. Although the winning margin was decreasing with each stride, Western Command could only finish second. Swift Fire came with telling strides at the end to deprive South Star of the third place. Western Command's best form is a few notches below the all conquering Bourbon King. In his present condition, he should not be hard pressed to win the next start provided he is campaigned in a handicap event. Trainer Prithviraj continued with his winning ways, when two of his well-supported horses romped home to the delight of their supporters. National Trust and Auchinlech were all the rage in a sprint event for horses in class III. Panchakshari, despite running a good second in his previous appearance this season, was ignored in the betting ring. Allowing the two market fancies to take turns in front, Suraj Narredu brought Panchakshari with a flourish and left the field totally flat footed. Korporate came with a late run to finish second ahead of National Trust. Auchinlech has once again proved himself to be totally unreliable and should be left alone. Prithviraj's Regal Music, a winner in his last outing was once again ridden by Appu. Allowing early leader Kioko to bring him into the straight, Appu drove Regal Music to the front and scored comfortably from a fast finishing Seize the Night. Kioko plodded on to be third ahead of a fancied Black Splendour. Jockey Prakash drew a blank for the second race day in a row. He was unsuccessful on all four rides, the most expensive failure being the defeat of raging hot favourite Snow Prince in a race for 2 year-olds. Snow Prince was odds-on for a long while with strong support coming for Perfect Analysis who had been a forward runner in his earlier start. A couple of minutes before race time, there was a huge touch on Neil Darashah trained Miss Honeydew. She was backed down from 10/1 to 5/1. She was knocked around in the early stages of the race, while the favourite Snow Prince was seen leading from Perfect Analysis and Little Splendour. It was Little Splendour who went away from the field in the straight and looked set to win, when Miss Honeydew started galloping on the wide outside. It was all over in a trice when Miss Honeydew surged ahead and won easily. Prakash had to use the stick on Snow Prince to nose out Man United for third place. Jockey Appu started the day by steering favourite Hard Cash to an easy victory. This horse was at the centre of a controversy last week when he had got beaten in the lowest class and it was reported that Ashwin Rao had been suspended for four race days for riding an ill judged race. Even on that day Hard Cash had been backed heavily. His trainer Amit Caddy wanted to prove a point and decided to run him again within six days and that too in the higher class. His victory today confirmed that he had not been allowed to run on its merits by the jockey last Saturday. It shall be interesting to see if the stipes at Bangalore re-open the enquiry. Hard Cash kept the second favourite Amazing Flora at bay while the rest of the field was totally outclassed. The Bugs Bunny Trophy saw the Eshwer trained Jersey Power cornering a lot of support in the bookmakers ring. Four other runners, namely Afea, Lucky Gold Star, Luckynumberslevin and You and I were also fancied by their respective camps. Afea led into the homestretch but was soon passed by the Christopher ridden Luckynumberslevin who ultimately sailed away for an easy victory. Favourite jersey Power could not get up to Afea and had to be content with the third place. A distance behind were the other runners headed by Lucky Gold Star. Jockey De Sousa rode his first winner at the Bangalore Turf Club when he brought Mother's Pride from the back and pulverised the opposition in a race run over 1,800 metres. Well bred Southern Chieftain was hard ridden to finish second, only a shade ahead of Orientation. On a day when only two favourites won, the professional honours were shared by trainers Prithviraj and Amit Caddy along with jockey KPG Appu. Incidentally, Appu was astride both the winning favourites.
