Fancied Runners Score with Regularity

Wednesday's nine-event card at Mysore looked tricky at the start, but it turned out to be a dream day for the punters as six first favourites and two well-backed horses scored with regularity. This was rather unusual, as the Mysore Winter season is restricted to older horses and a smaller number of youngsters stationed at this centre. Winner picking is generally difficult and it is normal to see long-priced outsiders romping home with ease. The Negresco Cup, a seven-furlong race for horses in the lowest class, was accorded the pride of place as the day's feature. Chetan-trained Suryarath had never raced in this class. He had progressively come down the scales and was getting an opportunity to score in a weak set today. Although he was shouldering the top weight, his connections were confident about his chances. Suryarath started as a clear favourite ahead of Turbanator and Masurathi. Gnaneshwar was quick to push Suryarath from the gates and occupy the box-seat behind a runaway High Fortune, who set a fast pace till the runners straightened for home. It took a while before the favourite responded to the whalebone and got the measure of the leader. Suryarath got stronger with each stride and posted a popular victory. The others were under pressure to make progress from the rear and it was left to Smile Again to run into third place. The high point in the day's racing was the performance of horses trained by Rakesh. The professional led-in four winners and celebrated a memorable afternoon. Rakesh is expected to move his racing establishment to Bangalore in the near future, and the talented trainer is bound to make a mark in the larger arena. While Satin Slipper, Tantrik and Eona scored expectedly, it was Youre My Sensation who caused the only upset in the day's race card. Imran Chisty had specially flown down from Mumbai to partner Satin Slipper. He took a smart jump from a wide draw and tracked Easy Rider till the bend. Not wanting to take any chances, Satin Slipper was sent into an unassailable lead at this stage, and Imran was able to relax thereafter. She scored comfortably over Easy Rider and a late finishing Wise Words. Satin Slipper is in terrific form and the six year old is likely to score an encore amongst horses in her own age group. The next win came in the form of Tantrik. He was lucky to win by a whisker from a poorly ridden Alinski. Jockey Melvyn made a mess of his ride astride the favourite. Alinski was smartest out of the gates, but for reasons known to Melvyn, he was dropped back to sixth place as the horses ran down the backstretch. Ansonia and Tantrik were the first into the straight and the two of them were involved in a tough battle for supremacy. Alinski was pulled on the wide outside and asked for an effort. The game horse responded strongly, made up a lot of ground on the leaders but was a nose behind Tantrik at the wire. He lost a race that he should have won. On the other hand, Tantrik was given his best chance by Harish, and the horse was lucky to seize this opportunity. Turf Raider came with a long stretch run to finish a close third. You're My sensation gave jockey Afsar a winner after many years. The boy had gone as a work rider to the Middle East before returning back to Bangalore earlier this year. He took this last outing winner to the front, and made all the running while keeping World Is Toomuch at bay. Fancied Majestic Strides ran a miserable race while finishing more than a distance behind the winner. The fourth-linker was completed with the speedy Eona. She was backed to the exclusion of her rivals and was ridden in exemplary fashion by apprentice Khurshad. The young boy has been getting his opportunities in recent months and has shown that he has a mature head on his shoulders. Eona led from the word "go" and was able to hold a late challenge from Mr Magic and Testarosa. Super Sha was the fastest finishing horse in this race and he should be followed hereafter. The other professional to score more than once was trainer BK Narendra. He has started training horses after an interval of a few years, and the double that he scored today should go a long way in the gentleman regaining his confidence. Both the victories were achieved through public choices Mid Summer Star and Amatol. While Mid Summer Star made full use of his low rating and scored from end to end, it was the victory of Amatol which was more inspiring. Amatol had won his earlier start and had been penalized for that effort. Apprentice Madhu Babu kept him at the back before rousing him near the bend. Amatol came with a strong burst of speed and swamped his opponents. The trainer has done well to keep the eight year old in good condition. Early leader Feel My Heart stopped in his tracks to finish a faraway second. Darashah's three year-old Ohiyesa redeemed his reputation by winning a top-class race this afternoon. The youngster was considered the best of his age at Mysore, but had flopped badly as an odds-on choice earlier in the season. He was once again giving lots of weight to his rivals today, but was looking much better in the paddock. Gnaneshwar was a picture of confidence on Ohiyesa, as he wasn't bothered with the early pace in this race. The favourite tracked a bunch of no-hopers before going into the lead. Ohiyesa lengthened his strides and went so far in front that his jockey was able to let him down much before the winning post.Sword Of Power and India Shining were able to save place money for their respective connections. With this victory, Ohiyesa has graduated to Class I and shall have to be relocated to Bangalore.
