Youremylov Lifts Air Force Gold Cup

A speedy performance by the favourite Youremylov helped the Rakesh-trained six year-old to win The Air Force Gold Cup, the feature event in Wednesday's race card at Mysore. It was after a fairly long time that the MRC authorities incorporated a Class III race over 1,100 metres in their prospectus. Being an event open to horses of all ages, two well-performed three year-olds decided to enter the fray. Theworldismine and Vertex had the credentials to support their chances. Vertex was known to be a speedy customer and had won two races from start to finish, but her recent form had been mediocre. On the other hand, Theworldismine had been improving with time. His best performances were over seven furlongs and more, and Wednesday's trip was expected to be slightly sharp for his style of running. The stable expected him to win on sheer class. But both these youngsters had to contend with Youremylov. This horse had arrived here from Mumbai a couple of seasons ago. He had won numerous events at that centre, but all over five furlongs. After many unsuccessful starts over trips beyond his capabilities at Mysore, Youremylov was getting an opportunity to showcase his talent over a trip suited to his style of running. The stable lost no opportunity in booking the services of PS Chouhan to guide his fortunes. The horse had worked exceedingly well and given all-round satisfaction to his master about his present form and fitness. The connections started backing him at 3/1 and continued to do so till race time. Youremylov reached the starting gates as an even-money choice to lift this prestigious trophy. John-ridden Theworldismine drifted out in price, but the nice looking horse had fair support in the betting ring. Red Dawn was another one who was looking well, but since this was to be his first run on the local track, racegoers wanted to have a close look at his performance. Taking full advantage of his useful draw, Youremylov took off freely in front and set a fast pace ahead of Ansonia and Red Dawn, while the rest of the runners were still trying to get into their rhythm. Chouhan had little problem in keeping his horse on an even keel and maintaining his lead as they began skirting the final bend. In the meanwhile, John was taking his time in rousing Theworldismine to start improving his position. The horse was produced on the wide outside and asked to quicken. A couple of left-handers saw him bounding forward, but then for no apparent reason, the jockey decided to switch his whip to the right. It goes to the credit of the horse that despite all these impediments he flew in the final stages to finish close to the leader. Youremylov scored by three parts of a length from Theworldismine. Red Dawn finished a creditable third and must be noted as an early winner in the same class. PS Chouhan and Rakesh thus completed a popular double, as they had already scored with an odds-on Youre My Sensation. This was another horse who was winning after a few seasons. He had been ridden poorly in his last start and had lost a race that he could have won. The connections decided to run him in the lower class on Wednesday. He was facing such a poor lot of horses that it was difficult to pick another horse against him. The short-priced favourite was ridden in copybook fashion by his jockey. He was settled in third place before being alerted at the bend. Finding little room on the inside, he was moved towards the centre of the track and shown daylight. Youre My Sensation galloped freely thereafter and sauntered away from Analika and a late finishing Mahseer. The other jockey-trainer combination to score a double was Md Parveen and Santosh Rao. The only difference was the fact that while Chouhan and Rakesh scored with public favourites, these two scored with rank outsiders in the opening and concluding events of the afternoon. They started the day with Son Of Fortune. This horse tracked favourite Azazel till the bend before seizing the advantage. The fact that Azazel burst a blood vessel helped his cause. He fought on bravely till the end to keep the fast finishing pair of Splendid Glory and Record Time at bay. Santosh Rao was delighted when his two wards fought out a scintillating finish in the last race of the day. Bottom-weighted Worth A Diamond led till the last stride before she was pipped by the late finishing Prettyyashyashvini. It was difficult to determine the winner with a naked eye, as the two runners were separated by the width of the track. Feel My Heart ended a close third. Yet another double this afternoon was credited to the account of trainer Monnappa. A pair of three year-olds, namely World Is Toomuch and Mr Hurricane, were the two winners from his yard. World Is Toomuch was gelded after his juvenile season and had started to blaze the track thereafter. He reproduced that form on the race track by coming from mid-division and going past a hapless Skyfleet near the winning post. World Is Toomuch showed his liking for a slightly longer trip and is capable of winning again in this season. Much older Stampede found these younger horses a tough nut to crack, and will have to await his turn in an event for those in his own age group. Mr Hurricane was a recent acquisition for the Monnappa stable. With last outing winner Forgivenforget receiving all round support to complete an encore, Mr Hurricane was neglected in the betting ring. Jockey Mark raced Mr Hurricane in front and led into the home stretch. Forgivenforget came alongside soon thereafter, and the two runners began to draw away from their opponents. The heavily bandaged Forgivenforget, under relentless pressure from John, led briefly in the final furlong before giving up the fight. Mr Hurricane stepped up the momentum and scampered away in the closing stages of this race. Final Frontier was noticed to be the best of the rest, as he ended a faraway third. There is seldom an afternoon during these mini seasons at Mysore when we don’t see a shock result in the day's card. It was the turn of Sandokan to shock the followers of form today. In a race which looked like a totally open affair, Sandokan was one of the least fancied amongst a dozen runners. The 65/1 outsider took a good jump and was sitting an unconcerned fourth for most of the way. With front-running Tantrik shooting his bolt near the distance post, Sandokan was quick to go into the lead. It was smooth sailing thereafter as the big made horse lengthened his strides, and under the strong urgings of Qureshi, ran away from Beauty On Duty and Turf Raider. The ultra-consistent War Head ran one of his poorer races in recent months to finish a close fifth. Although they failed with Theworldismine and Forgivenforget, trainer Pratap Kamath and his stable rider John had something to cheer with the narrow victory scored by Ciampino. Despite feeling the pressure of the top weight on his back, Ciampino was driven to a close and hard-fought victory over a late rushing Demanding. John had some difficulty in keeping this horse on an even keel, but once he took him to the front, the horse galloped resolutely. Apprentice Khurshad tried to reverse the result in the Stewards Room, as he felt that the winner had hampered his passage, but that was not to be. After due deliberations, the objection was over-ruled.
