Mr Lakshminarayana Trainer Sharath Kumar leading Voice Of India (S John Up), winner of The S N Harish Memorial Trophy

Trainer Sharat Kumar's ability to transform ordinary horses into "Galloping Goldmines" was on display at the Mysore races on Thursday. With the help of jockey John, the trainer saddled three popular winners and walked away with two prestigious trophies on offer this afternoon. What was more fascinating was the fact that it was achieved through horses that had come to his stable as "maidens", and were winning for the third time in the short period that he had tended to them. Both Voice Of India and Atlantus were unable to win a race for their previous masters. Both were modestly bred and had made numerous unsuccessful efforts to enter the winners enclosure. Getting frustrated by their poor performances, the owners decided to get rid of them. Sharat was quick to seize the opportunity and picked them for a friend. The rest seems to be history. Voice Of India won his third race in five starts, while Atlantus scored a lucrative hat-trick in this short season. The two of them have been well fancied on each of these occasions, and the supporters of this stable have thrived in recent times. The Udhagamandalam Cup, a class II race over seven furlongs, attracted a tightly handicapped field of ten runners. The betting boards indicated the open nature of this race. Forever Mark, Hill Of Grace, Atlantus and Undue were available at more or less the same odds. The race saw the four of them running close behind the speedy Mr Majestic, who retired after leading the field into the straight. Suraj Narredu pushed Hill Of Grace to the front and seemed to have the measure of Undue and Forever Mark, before Atlantus arrived on the scene. Under the relentless driving of John, Atlantus defied the penalty and won close to the winning post. This was his third straight win in the last five weeks, and the four year old is bound to be declared the "Horse Of The Season". Hill Of Grace, Undue and Forever Mark finished close behind the winner. The SN Harish Memorial Trophy, held in the memory of a very popular commentator at this centre, saw a rare burst of speed from Voice Of India. John had kept him off the pace and was content to race in last position till heads turned for home. The dark bay was pulled out at this stage and was lucky to get a clear run. He picked up a bunch of tired horses and nailed War Head close home. The runner-up was given a poor ride by apprentice Himanshu. The boy did not know where to go, before deciding to duck onto the inner rails. War Head made up enormous ground to run a good second. Star Of Excellence came from the rear to pass Windsor Square in the last few metres of this race. The combination of Sharat and John had won an earlier race with on-money favourite Attaturk. The rider had to use all his wits and abilities to get the better of a runaway Time To Sparkle. Attaturk is known to dislike carrying the top weight in a race. Since he had come down a class, there was no alternative but to race him with 62 kgs on his back. The horse won on sheer class and justified the favouritism in a race for horses in the lowest class. The tally for this pair may have gone up to four in the last race, but that was not to be. Sandalwood Star was fancied to upset the applecart of Lokanath's Supreme Arch. Despite John's strong efforts with Sandalwood Star, Supreme Arch was unstoppable today. Apprentice Sreekanth steered him from the fourth position and the youngster was much to powerful for his opponents. Supreme Arch had given indications of his capabilities while finishing an unextended third in a maiden's race during Bangalore Summer. Lokanath and Sreekanth had won earlier with another three-year-old called Dramatic Dancer. Suraj ridden Smart Fresh was the favourite all morning, before there was a "dramatic" turn of events. Dramatic Dancer was plastered off the boards and closed as an even-money chance to land the spoils. The confidence of Lokanath's supporters was well placed, as the winner came with a sustained run and sailed past a helpless Smart Fresh. The Filly is capable of repeating in a similar set. The other three year olds in this race were totally outclassed. It was a special day in the professional career of apprentice Sreekanth. The boy rode a popular treble and showed why more and more stables are entrusting their fancied runners to him. Apart from Lokanath's pair of Dramatic Dancer and Supreme Arch, the boy rode a winner for Md Khan. Dickey legged Storm Chaser was the beneficiary of a low handicap in this race, and was fortunate to be drawn one. Sreekanth pushed him to the front and had the pleasure of looking back in the straight. The winner showed no signs of discomfort and returned totally sound after the race. This was good news for the owners who are hoping for an encore from this horse in his next start. Public choice Shot Of Gold chased the winner till the distance post before allowing Allegro to take the second spot. The most exciting finish of the day was witnessed in The Racingpulse.in Trophy. Patched-up four-year-old Nermai was supported with confidence and was expected to get the better of the fancied pair of Testarosa and Burning Ambitions. To the delight of his fans, Chandrasekhar ridden Nermai overtook front-running Testarosa and opened up a fair lead ahead of his nearest rival Look Alike. Milan pulled out his stick on Look Alike and refused to give up. The gap between the two runners began to become smaller and smaller. Look Alike got up on the last two strides and put his neck in front of Nermai. Burning Ambitions came with a smooth acceleration to save place money. A spate of heavy rains and flood in recent weeks has caused havoc in certain parts of Karnataka. Thousands have been rendered homeless and have lost most of their belongings. The Chief Minister has called for help from the citizens of this state. The Stewards and Members of the Managing Committee of The Mysore Race Club decided to raise their hand. They donated a sum of Rs 10 lakh to this noble cause. The permanent staff of the Club decided to donate a day's wages towards the said fund. Both these cheques were handed over to The Cabinet Minister, who was present at the race course on Thursday.
