Humble Guy Scores in Emphatic Fashion

Trainer R Foley leading Humble Guy (B Prakash Up), winner of The Star Of Mysore Gold Cup

Robert Foley's Humble Guy had to wait almost a full year before re-entering the winners enclosure on Friday at Mysore. The Star Of Mysore Gold Cup was the feature event in the day's card. This seven-furlong race was selected for Humble Guy's seasonal debut this year. This small made horse had won his last two starts on this track in 2008, and both those victories were scored with ease. The handicapper had been quite severe in dealing out a huge penalty for those efforts. Humble Guy had been pushed up more than 20 kilos in the process. Friday's feature saw him conceding weight to all his rivals. These included well-performed horses like Read My Mind and My Friend Paul, who had travelled from Bangalore to take part in this race. Humble Guy had been showing out in his track trials, and was reported to be looking extremely well after his relocation from Ooty. He was supported with gay abandon and sent to the gates as an even money favourite to lift this trophy. The backers of the favourite missed a heartbeat when Humble Guy lost a little bit of ground at the start. The extreme outside draw compounded the problem, and Prakash had to make early use of the horse while improving his position prior to entering the straight. Youremylove brought them into view before retiring from the scene. There was a bit of jostling thereafter, with most of the jockeys trying to take advantageous positions. Prakash steered clear of this trouble by skirting the field and bringing Humble Guy on the wide outside. The favourite showed his superiority by running away from his opposition. Eversoclever came with a long stretch run to take the second spot ahead of a tired Read My Mind. Humble Guy has now progressed to the highest class, and in his present form and condition, looks good enough to score again. Prakash and Foley completed a quick double in the very next race with Exclusive Grey. The four year old was quoted at prohibitive odds and was unbackable in this nine horse field. His closest rival was expected to be Darashah's Ashkan. A freak accident near the three furlong marker saw Ashkan dropping his jockey. Shoaib landed right in front of Ride and Shine and caused a chain reaction. The front running trio of Exclusive Grey, Windsor Square and Mr Bureaucrat were oblivios of the happenings at the back. They ran on to take the first three spots. Exclusive Grey impressed by winning this race in a common canter. With Jagadeesh reporting sick, jockey John got a chance ride on favourite Immortal. The Puttanna trainee looked good in The V B Ramachandran Memorial Cup. The five-year-old was the youngest horse in the set. John had little problem in taking a good jump and waiting in second place while taking the bend. He overtook Darktan thereafter, and charged for home. It was smooth sailing thereafter as Immortal lengthened his strides and ran away from a late finishing Paint Me Red and Anoosheek. A similar ride on another favourite called Looking To Lead helped John complete his double for the day. Looking To Lead had been a trifle unlucky by running second on three occasions during the recently concluded summer season. The four-year old filly had no such conqueror today. She settled nicely behind the speedy Satin Slipper, and made her move after straightening for home. Her smooth acceleration was much too powerful for Show N Tell and Mayhem. A nice gamble was landed by the Rakesh stable with Definite Believe. In this second start of his short career, the three-year-old colt was running in open company. Last outing winner Rich Rogue was set to concede more than eight kilos to Definite Believe. It is difficult for one three-year-old to concede so much weight to another. Definite Believe was slammed down to first favouritism. His supporters were oblivious to the fact that their horse was being ridden by J Paswan. The extremely average jockey has a stray winner during a season. It proved to be a lucky day for all connected with Definite Believe on Friday. The favourite had a hampered beginning and was seen racing on the rails till the home turn. Early leader Rich Rogue began to falter under the guidance of Suraj Narredu, and was noticed to be slowing down with each stride. Definite Believe was racing right behind him. Rich Rogue rolled out under pressure and presented a dream opening to the favourite. To the delight of his numerous backers, Definite Believe seized this opportunity and went through. With Paswan jumping up and down in the saddle, the younger horse was able to keep Voodoo Moon and Careerist at bay. Tharun's Coorg Honey was another favourite to score during the afternoon. She was an odds-on choice to spreadeagle her opposition. Shoban Babu gave her a nice smooth ride and did not panic when he saw top weighted Vertex opening up a sizeable lead at the bend. He changed gears at that stage and his filly responded brilliantly. Coorg Honey scored with a minimum of fuss and was eased up much before the winning post. Arabian Memories was a leisurely second. The programme started with two races reserved for horses in class B. In a nail-biting finish, Running Man was able to win the day's opener from a well-supported Gracian. The two runners raced abreast for most of the straight and could not be separated by a naked eye. The final verdict was only a "nose". The second race was run over a mile. Md Khan's Fantabulous Hero was a popular winner of this event. The horse had won a race during Bangalore Summer, and that experience was good enough to land the spoils today. Friday's racing was kind to the punters, and with so many favourites obliging in the eight event card, it was normal to see bright and cheerful faces at the Mysore Race Club.
