The mini seasons at Mysore during winter and summer are primarily held to cater to older horses, and racing patrons are generally careful while wagering on their personal selections. It is not unusual to see rank outsiders romping home with effortless ease, and jackpot pools being carried over. All that and more transpired at the Mysore Race Club on Wednesday. Public choices and well supported second favourites took a back seat, while long priced horses showed a huge turnaround in form to post sensational victories. Six out of the seven races produced shock results, with The Gain being the only favourite to win during the afternoon. The jackpot pool was once again carried forward. The followers of trainer Vishal Yadav were badly bruised as four prime favourites from his yard had to taste defeat at the hands of their superior opponents. Khoka, Gallardo, Suleiman Pasha and Brave Soldier took a lot of money down the drain. Gallardo was unfortunate to break down and was eventually put to sleep. The Stewards Cup was the feature event of the day. Korporate and Suleiman Pasha cornered the betting in a field of a dozen acceptors. Both of them had been sharpened on the track with the aid of separate mock races. The two market leaders had come down in handicap, and were assisted by apprentice jockeys who claimed allowances on their respective mounts. A late surge of support saw Suleiman Pasha reaching the starting gates as a firm favourite to win this prestigious trophy. Madhubabu ventured to make all the running and took Suleiman Pasha into an early lead ahead of Bridge Too Far, Korporate and Zooming ,while Royal View raced a few lengths behind the leaders. To the dismay of their many supporters, both Suleiman Pasha and Korporate began to send distress signals as the runners straightened for home. Zooming briefly headed the field before he was passed by Royal View along the rails. It ceased to be a race thereafter, as Royal View went away from Zooming. It was a rare victory for apprentice Adarsh and trainer Narendra .Bridge Too Far and High Tower were a few lengths behind at the finish. Suleiman Pasha was known to be a chronic bleeder in the past, but his new trainer was optimistic about his present condition. He was disappointed to learn that the horse had bled again. Firey Business dropped the first shocker of the day. After a couple of poor efforts, she sported a pair of wings as she came flying in the straight and beat Musical Signature near the winning post. Favourite Khoka managed to hold on to his third spot. The next race too was reserved for horses in the lowest Class. On-money favourite Run For Fame led till the bend and retired. Well positioned Don Vinton grew stronger at the finish and held on to win ahead of a late finishing Sunlaa and Ametrine. A mile race for horses in Class III saw big betting on Christopher's mount Gallardo. He had run a fair third in his previous start and looked better than his opponents. With stray support coming for Chocolate Brownie and Mr Sunrise, the other runners were available at fancy odds. The speedy Swiss Queen went to the front and led from a tightly packed field headed by Gallardo and the others. Within the first two furlongs of this race, Gallardo had a heart attack and collapsed. Shafiq and Swiss Queen brought the field into view with Mr Sunrise and Star Blue being her only challengers. Despite the best efforts of Shafiq, who was motionless in the saddle, Swiss Queen refused to slow down and passed the winning post ahead of Star Blue and Mr Sunrise. The only respite for the punters came in the form of Rakesh trained The Gain. This sparingly raced four year old had finished a close fifth in a maidens event over the Mysore Derby weekend. He had been well prepared thereafter ,and was confidently supported at even money today. Jockey Rajesh was a mere spectator as The Gain raced in front before lengthening his strides in the straight. He should be able to improve from his present mark and win again for the asking. He was on tight reins for most of the way and won unextended from Veda Priya and Master Prospect. Brave Soldier and Nectar Jewel were the other favourites to bite the dust. Brave Soldier was kept too far behind to make up ground on Copenhagen. Apprentice Maseyk was able to push Copenhagen past the winning post.Rain God led till the bend before retiring into third place. This was the second time that Brave Soldier has found someone better this season. He should be able to pick up a race before long. On the other hand, Nectar Jewel led from the start, before running out of steam near the furlong marker. He stopped in his tracks as soon as he was challenged by Billy Blackjack. The latter came with gigantic strides and ran away from a late finishing Danger Diabolic. Nectar Jewel finished a poor third. No professional could score more than once during this forgettable afternoon.
