Read My Mind Wins Effortlessly

A well filled card of ten events was framed for the concluding day of the Mysore Summer Season and the same was gone through in soft underfoot conditions on a bright and sunny afternoon. Lots of rain in the last few days had convinced the authorities to postpone Saturday's race card to the day after the Derby. They wanted the track to be in the best possible shape on "Derby Day", and this decision ultimately proved to be a wise one. The track had definitely suffered with a heavy pounding on the previous afternoon, and the same was reflected in the results on Monday. Outsiders dominated the day's racing and racegoers were caught flatfooted when the Jackpot, Mini-Jackpot and both the Exacta pools were carried forward. The all powerful stable of Robert Foley had four prime favourites in the day's card, but the best they could do was to manage the third spot in three of the four events. Many smaller stables had their occasional winners and two of them got to open their accounts on the last day of the season. The Gayatri Devi Memorial Gold Cup attracted the full compliment of a dozen runners. Foley's Potential Star was making a bid to retain her unbeaten record for the season, and her main opponents were considered to be Mighty Heart and Read My Mind. The huge penalties for her last two wins did not deter the punters from supporting Potential Star. They realized their folly within the first few hundred metres of today's race. While Mighty Heart and Read My Mind were racing up front, Prakash was seen niggling the favourite to stay in touch with the two of them. Mighty Heart flattered briefly before Appu was able to urge Read My Mind to wrest the initiative. It was smooth sailing thereafter, as Read My Mind lengthened her strides and won by a widening margin of more than three lengths. Potential Star was hard pressed to retain the third spot ahead of a late finishing Artistic Way. The latter will be too good to miss in the smaller season wherein he will face horses of his own vintage. Mighty Heart was running after more than three months, and this performance should brighten his chances for an early success in the Bangalore Winter Season. An alarming increase in the odds against Southern Chieftain were indicative of the scene to unfold in The Setia Teknologi Cup, the other prominent race that was run over 1400 metres. Srinath was unable to hold his position in the early stages of the race, and Southern Chiftain was found to be gracing the wrong end of the field as the horses began to take the rising ground.Srinath brought him wide into the home stretch and this effort told on this four year old. He finally finished a poor fourth. There was a lot of smart money riding on second favourite Double Elite, but that too went down the drain as Mr Bureaucrat came with smooth acceleration and beat him near the post. Dickey-legged eight year old Demanding relished the underfoot conditions and ran one of his best races in recent times by finishing a close third. Mr Bureaucrat was the first leg of the only professionaldouble scored in the day by trainer Vishal Yadav. His other winner came in the last race when Amelia Cordell raised a fluent gallop and got up on the last stride to beat favourite Bliss. For the record, both the Vishal Yadav winners were available at 50/1 in the betting rings. The other Foley charges to fall by the wayside were Beauty Dancer and Mystified in the two divisions of The Bottolanda Gold Cup. The normally lethargic Billy Blackjack took a level start for a change and came with giant strides to run away with the upper division. Early leaders Little Splendour and Mystified had no answers to this sperb effort from the winner.`The lower division saw a well fancied Kalpavruksha overtaking the frontrunning Sunny Baba, and winning on tight reins. This recent import from Western India should win again for the asking. Beauty Dancer was hard ridden to retain third spot ahead of Show N Tell. A nice gamble was landed on the Sajid trained Ho Chi Minh. This horse had been steadily brought down in handicap, and a surge of money on this seven year old saw him reaching the starting gates as the first favourite.Mahendran found himself in a spot of bother when Ho Chi Minh lost an early position and dropped through the field. His patience was rewarded when he got a dream opening near the distance post. The favourite was good enough to take it, and scamper away from the rest. Ho Chi Minh staved off a belated challenge from Gallardo, who was unlucky to lose in a photo finish. The Usha Balram Cup was the last of the maiden races framed in the season. With the ante-post favourite Kangaroo Punch being declared a non-starter, Prithviraj's Perfect Analysis was installed as the public choice. Jockey Harish rode one of his confident races, when he kept this filly in box seat for most of the way before essaying a challenge down the middle of the track. She responded superbly and overtook Glory Bound with ease. There was no problem thereafter as Perfect Analysis won with plenty in the saddle. Mr Sunrise came with a nice run to take third place ahead of Sheer Gold. The trend of outsiders dominating the afternoon was set in the opening event of the day itself, when rank outsider Buddy galloped in the hands of P Mani and surprised everyone present at the race course. This sparingly raced ward of trainer Girinath was known to relish the mile trip, but his previous run was so poor that he was neglected in the betting rings. Another one to floor the punters was Warren Singh's Son Of Fortune, who relished the underfoot coditions and ran kindly for apprentice Gautam Raj. Azazel ran a close second while the favourite Anoosheek stopped in her tracks and finished in the ruck. The performance awards for the season were presented to the winners by Mr N V Babu, Chairman, Mysore Race Club in the paddock shortly after the penultimate race of the day. Robert Foley and B Prakash stole the thunder by winning 41 and 30 races respectively. Dr MAM Ramaswamy led the owners tally by winning stakes in excess of Rs 1.30 Crores.
