Own Voice Completes A Formality

A rousing performer during the Summer Season, Ganapathy trained Own Voice made his first appearance on the Mysore race track and ran away with The H H Sri Chamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Gold Cup, the feature event in Friday's race card at this centre. This well endowed race for three year olds became totally lacklustre after the withdrawal of Kyles Of Bute. This speedy horse picked up a stone in his morning track work and was withdrawn after the acceptance stage. This left only three runners in this prestigious event, with Own Voice standing tall amongst them. He was the highest rated amongst them and had been putting in some outstanding track work. Rare And Precious was supposed to be his closest challenger, and that is the order in which they ultimately finished. The bookmakers were extremely cautious and offered the measly odds of 30/100 on the favourite. Own Voice allowed Eona to lead til the bend before overtaking her in the straight. Rare And Precious made a move from the rear and essayed a challenge in the final furlong, but found the favourite too powerful to handle. Prakash rode Own Voice with confidence and gave him a single tap to remind him of his task. The chestnut gelding was always racing well within himself and wasn't fully extended to win this race. Eona finished a distance behind Rare And Precious. In my thirty odd years of racing experience, I have been witness to many happenings on the race track. Blood vessels breaking, fillies coming into season, internal bleeding, saddles slipping, bumping and boring, getting left at the gates and numerous other factors are part and parcel of racing all over the world. These are factors which are normally attributed to the "Uncertainties Of Racing". I was totally spellbound when Karl Umrigar managed to stay atop the public fancy Pink Passion in Bangalore, and win the race despite the saddle shifting towards the belly of the filly. I was also present at the Mahalakshmi race course when the saddle on the odds-on Marmolada slipped in the last fifty metres of the race. Marmolada was a distance clear of the rest, and the supporters of this favourite were horrified to see jockey Bhagwat lying sprawled on the turf near the winning post. One can go on and on about these incidents, but, what happened on Friday at Mysore was a first-timer and totally unbelievable. The setting was the seventh race in the day's card. Read My Mind and An Equal Music were backed with confidence by their respective camps. Star Millionaire was the third favourite in a field of a dozen runners. Appu was riding Read My Mind while apprentice Gaurav Sapra was entrusted with An Equal Music. Appu took the favourite to the front and led till the bend before he was overtaken by Star Millionaire, who was always running second till that stage. The one which caught the eye at this point was An Equal Music, who was cantering on the wide outside. With a minimal effort from his jockey, An Equal Music came alongside Star Millionaire and overtook him with ease. Gaurav Sapra gave him a couple of taps and the duo sailed away for an easy victory. Something very unusual happenned near the 200 metres marker. A fairly large object flew out of Gaurav Sapra's saddle, and landed with a thud in the path of the horses racing behind him. Racegoers all over the country were witness to this happening, since it was quite clear on the TV monitors. The yellow cone was immediately hoisted, and a stewards enquiry was conducted. It was reported that a pouch containing 5.5 Kgs of lead had slipped out of the saddle. The jockey had weighed-in 5.5 kgs less than what he had weighed-out. To the dismay of his numerous backers, An Equal Music was disqualified and the race was awarded to the second placed Star Millionaire. A pouch of lead slipping out of a properly zipped-up equipment is difficult to comprehend. It is obvious that the equipment must have been in poor shape for it to have given way during the running of this race. The Stewards of the MRC have decided to open a further enquiry into this incident. This lucky victory atop Star Millionaire, was win number three for jockey Prakash during the afternoon. After guiding Own Voice in the day's feature, Prakash was seen at his powerful best while punching away on Sporting Master. Milford and Sporting Master had recorded runaway victories in their previous starts. Both had been heavily penalized and came into this race as joint favourites. While Milford ran an insipid race, Sporting Master came with giant strides and beat the early leader Symbol Of Speed. Superior Surprise finished with a flourish to deprive Milford of the third berth. The last named should be ignored from a betting point of view till he comes down in handicap. The champion jockey rode a treble for the second day in succession. The day started with a couple of races for horses in the lowest class. Dutch Hero was the expected favourite in the first race. The odds against him began to expand with every passing moment, and the horse reached the starting gates as a 7/1 outsider. Chandrasekar was alert at the start and was able to guide Dutch Hero into an early lead from the extreme outside draw. This three year old was never headed and passed the winning post ahead of Power Of Glory and Prettyyashyashvini. The second race saw inspired betting on the B Puttanna trained Aaj Tak. He was backed down to odds-on favouritism. Jockey Mark did his best to keep him going, but was passed in the final stages of the race by Zangi. The winner is better known for his staying abilities and was a surprising winner of this sprint event. Activisto and Aspiring Seven were close behind the first two. Trainer Pradeep Annaiah's You're Wonderful was the easiest winner in the day's card. After a couple of preparatory runs during Bangalore summer, this youngster was entered in a mile handicap for horses in class IV. P S Chouhan had this big made horse on a tight leash, and was content to race second behind Dragonair who had chosen to make the running. You're Wonderful quickened like a top class horse and put daylight between himself and the rest. Chouhan looked back repeatedly and eased his mount much before passing the final post. The winner is a good horse and can be followed with confidence. The same stable had the favourite in the last race of the day. Stunning Grey was expected to run away from the field, but nothing like that happenned. Fire Of Joy, Fit For Fray, Flip Your Destiny and Stunning Grey came charging down the straight and finished in that order. A little more than one length separated the four of them at the finish. Fit For Fray was distinctly unlucky, as she veered out under pressure and finished on the outer strip of the track. Stunning Grey can pick up a race in similar company.
