Star Wave Wins In a Blanket Finish

STAR-WAVE

The Karnataka Racehorse Owners' Association Mysore 1000 Guineas 2008 (Grade III) conducted on Friday produced a finish worthy of an important event held during an afternoons' racing anywhere in the country. Five fillies finished within two lengths of each other, and only a short head and a short neck separated the first three. Stamina is a rare commodity, and a lack of it has seen many top class horses bite the dust in the Classic races scheduled during the season. The presence of the top rated Kiara did not scare the connections of the other fillies at this centre, as she was suspect over a staying trip. A total of a dozen runners accepted to face the starter in this first classic of the Mysore Season 2008. Equidae, Icebreaker and Star Wave came into this race with solid preparation, and the first named was touted as a live threat to the Pesi Shroff trained Kiara who started as an even-money favourite to win this race. Equidae was an impressive winner of her first start before she had suffered a setback in training. She had progressed thereafter and her breeding and style of running suggested that she would stay. Star Wave had beaten Kiara in their first clash in Mumbai, but she had been performing in patches thereafter. She had finished more than a distance behind Kiara in the Fillies Trial Stakes over a mile in the Bangalore Summer Season, and that perhaps reflected in her price going up to 7/1 at race time. With a significant weight advantage, Icebreaker had beaten the favourite in their last meeting. The fact that the fillies were racing at level weights today made racegoers go nap on Kiara and she was supported with immense confidence. Chimerique was pushed to the front and led from Abs Fabs, Equidae, Icebreaker and Flair Queen, while the others were following in close order. Christopher Alford was content to bide his time with Kiara and settled her into second last position till they began taking the slight uphill near the home turn. Prakash and Star Wave were cantering in the rear and seemed to be tracking Kiara for most of the trip. The field entered the straight with Chimerique maintaining a neck lead over Abs Fabs on her outside, Icebreaker in the middle of the track and Kiara on the wide outside. Icebreaker was the first to quicken and put his neck in front of Abs Fabs, who was fighting back on the inside. Kiara was definitely tired and was slowly losing touch with the two in front of her. The one that was slowly moving forward on the outer strip of the track was Star Wave. Prakash was riding powerfully and the filly was responding to his urgings. With an amazing display of horsemanship, Prakash was able to coax Star Wave into getting up on the last stride and pipping Abs Fabs and Icebreaker near the winning post. Kiara was another length and a half behind in fourth place, and only a neck in front of Salsera who was finishing fast at the finish. The real revelation of this race was the performance of Arjun Mangalorkar's Abs Fabs. She was friendless at 200/1 in the betting rings. Although she was one of the lowest rated horses in the field, her run was so eyecatching that she can be expected to climb the charts in the coming months. Kiara did not stay, and in all probability, will revert back to winning races over the shorter trips. Trainer Ganapathy has done extremely well with Star Wave, and this run shall definitely bring her into the Derby picture. The day's racing witnessed a rare feat from trainer Puttanna, who had the distinction of saddling a hat-trick in the first three races of a long card of nine events. Two of them were well fancied while the third was a rank outsider. The speedy Man United was entrusted to Gaurav Sapra, who rode him with confidence and beat the front running Glory Bound near the winning post. Man United rolled onto Glory Bound in the final stages of the race, but jockey Fargeat decided against raising an objection. The Stewards held an enquiry before raising the white cone. Mr Sunrise lost a lot of ground at the start, despite which, he finished with a flourish to take the third spot. Mr Sunrise can be earmarked for an early success. Puttanna's She’s A Diamond has a bad habit of being lethargic at the gates. After a couple of "gate practises", She's A Diamond was slammed down from 6/1 to 5/2. Jockey Mark did not panic when she missed the kick, and decided to improve her position as the race progressed. She's a Diamond wove her way through a tightly packed field and hit the front in the last furlong of the race. To the delight of her numerous supporters, she quickened nicely and won unextended from Voice of India and Executive Spirit. The hat-trick was completed with rank outsider Royal Bank. Sitting a handy fourth, Royal bank came with a smooth run and overtook favourite Silken Lines in the final stages of the race. The fancied Table Mountain ran a poor race and needs time to mature further. The two divisions of The Mrs Ammani Ramachandran Memorial Cup were won by a duo trained by Robert Foley. Srinath kept Orlando Bloom in a handy third position before skipping away from Smart and Special and Double Emerge. The victory was gained with a measure of comfort. The upper division was annexed by the Prakash ridden Star Flight. This on-money favourite got a scare when he got interfered with at the start, but was quick to recover from that skirmish. He galloped resolutely to get the better of Showhorse and An Equal Music. Star Flight can be placed to win again in his next start. Showhorse should also be able to win in a similar set. Living Luxury was able to score an encore when she made all the running in a sprint race for horses in class II. Srinath took her to the front, and had to draw on all his reserves to keep her going to win in a close finish from Fantabulous Prince and Rimpuche. Fancied Flaming Lamborgini ran a terrible race to finish in the ruck. The leading stable tried to win the other division of this race with Present Glory, but found In The Zone too good on the day. Present Glory was penalised more than a full class for her previous victory, and this proved to be a stopper. Prakash took her to the front and tried to make it start-to-finish, but was caught and passed by in The Zone near the distance post. The winner is back in form and can be expected to improve. A lot of money went down when On a Roll ran disappointingly and finished off the board. The last race produced another tantalizing finish when the two market leaders Leon Cavallo and Beauty Dancer were involved in a stirring duel. Prakash ridden Beauty Dancer had a distinct advantage in the final furlong, but found the favourite Leon Cavallo creeping up on her inside. Vinod Shinde was able to rouse Leon Cavallo to get up on the last stride and pip Beauty Dancer near the winning post. The day's racing was kind to punters as most of the events were won by well supported horses. B Puttanna and Robert Foley shared the days professional honours by scoring a treble each.
