On an afternoon when many fancied runners took a backseat, the talking point at the Mysore race course was the fine performance by the Satish Narredu trained Stylish Bay. The J H Foley Memorial Gold Cup was the setting for this impressive victory. In a field comprising of fancied horses like Assert The Right, Chilly Wind, Mill Fontaine and Saptashwa, the other runners were neglected in the betting ring. Although Stylish Bay had touched the board a couple of times in the highest Class at Bangalore, his ability to tackle the mile-long trip was in doubt. Assert The Right was installed as an on-money favourite to win this race. This four-year old was running at the bottom of the scales and had performed well in his last start. Some sentimental racegoers were sure that this favourite from Robert Foley's stable would win this cup event being held in the memory of his father. Alejandros and Mr Bureaucrat set a strong pace ahead of Chilly Wind, Assert The Right and Stylish Bay, and entered the straight in more or less the same order. It was evident at this stage itself that the favourite was not going to win. Assert The Right was the widest of all and was galloping on the wrong leg. Prakash was struggling to get him going. Chandrasekar took an opening through the centre of the pack and pushed Stylish Bay to take over the running near the 300-metre marker. The response was immediate, with Stylish Bay producing an astounding gallop and winning by a "Street" from a late finishing Mill Fontaine, Brown Sugar and Chilly Wind. There was a mild skirmish near the bend when Appu on Chilly Wind and Vinod Shinde On Mill Fontaine tried to make their moves at the same juncture. The erratic Alejandros veered out a bid and added to the confusion. Appu tried to reverse the judges’ placings in the stewards’ room, but the objection was thrown out in quick time. Stylish Bay was easily backable at 10/1. The A C Somanna Memorial Trophy was divided into two divisions. The upper division saw the reappearance of Royal Strider, who had won his last start just seven days ago. Royal Strider had been heavily penalized by the handicapper, but his style of winning had been so impressive, that he was once again installed as a firm favourite for this race. Allowing Midsummer Star and India Shining to dictate terms till the bend, Prakash wasted no time in taking over the running as they entered the straight. Royal Strider was quick to respond and strode away from a late finishing Afghan and a tiring India Shining. The victory was gained easily. The lower division saw another Prakash-ridden horse being favoured in the betting ring. His mount Xian and Our Lancer were the joint favourites, before the odds against the latter began to expand. Both the fancied runners were out of depth in this race, as Place Her Well set a scorching pace and lasted out to hold a belated challenge from Dhanush. Trainer Bobby was rewarded for claiming an allowance on the winner, who is known to relish frontrunning tactics. Another upset was witnessed in The Hyderabad Race Club Gold Cup, a seven furlong race for horses in Class I. There was one-sided betting on Swift Fire who was supported enthusiastically. This runner from Michael Eshwer's stable was reported to be in excellent condition. Appu rode a very peculiar race on this favourite. He was totally at sea in the early stages of this race, as he got knocked around and dropped back to the rear of a closely packed field. He did not make any move to improve his position, as Newfoundland and Lava skipped away from the frontrunning Stone Of Destiny. In the end, Newfoundland won easily from Lava while Swift Fire ran on to be an easy third. Stone Of Destiny held on to the fourth berth. Ballerina Girl and Chocolate Brownie were the two other favourites who won in the day's card. Arjun Mangalorkar's Ballerina Girl is known to be a speedy customer. In her last few runs, she has been going to the front and stopping. There was no such problem today as John took her to the front and shook her up near the final bend. She responded gamely and lengthened her strides. She won by a widening ten lengths from Darktan and Clasic armour. On the other hand, the margin of victory for Chocolate Brownie was very close for comfort. Gaurav Sapra pushed the favourite into the lead near the distance post and seemed to be going well before he was given a huge scare by the Prakash ridden Million Words. The two of them were racing abreast for almost two hundred metres, before Chocolate Brownie put her neck in front. This was the second time in succession that this colt won as a strong favourite. The day started with a race for horses in the lowest class. The presence of jockey Harish on Nice Guy made him an obvious first choice for the punters. Harish took Nice Guy to the front, but was passed by Event Horizon and Aspiring Seven in the final stages of the race. Event Horizon was able to retain his small lead and win this event. Gaurav Sapra had his second winner for the day when he had an armchair ride to victory on Master Strategist. This horse led from the beginning and kept increasing the margin as the race progressed. There was strong support for My Winning Charm but she was not good enough to challenge the winner. Splendid Glory was a heavily whipped third.
