Secret Song Wins with a Measure of Comfort

Thursday's racing at Mysore was a routine affair, with a well filled card of eight events framed for the afternoon. Barring the Millions and Classics, most of the big stables of Bangalore have planned to give their horses a rest and decided not take part in the current season. It is, therefore, left to Robert Foley and his powerful string of horses to dominate racing at this centre. His horses have been well prepared at Ooty and are busy picking their races with ease. One such example was the victory of Secret Song in the K T Thammanna Gowda Memorial Cup, the feature event in the day's card. This well-bred four-year old was always known to possess a lot of ability. A mild setback in the early stages of his career had seen him missing from the race track for a while. Secret Song had made a fine impression while winning a race a couple of weeks ago, and the handicapper was quick to pounce on him. He was penalized more than a Class for that effort. Not to be bothered with these technicalities, the stable accepted to run him in the day's feature. Champion jockey Prakash was declared to ride him. He was supported with supreme confidence and backed at a short price of 35/100 offered by the bookmakers. His victory was considered a formality. Secret Song did not let them down. Allowing Eona and Easy Rider to make the early pace, Prakash eased his mount into third place till the field entered the straight. Artistic Way and Mezappa lost a lot of ground at the start, and were seen trailing the field. Secret Song was sent to the front at the two furlong marker and his jockey was delighted with the response that he got from the horse. Secret Song was still on a tight rein as he passed the winning post, many lengths ahead of Strong Minded and a late finishing Raiders Sun. The winner is in irresistible form and should win again. Strong Minded signalled a return to form and should be able to pick a race in inferior company. Later in the day, Prakash was able to guide two other horses to effortless victories. Open Opinion was another short priced runner, who was tackling a bunch of local horses. The speedy Swift Sword showed out till the distance post, before Prakash released his grip on Open Opinion and asked him to quicken. The gelding responded immediately and sped away from the rest. Swift Sword held on to his second spot ahead of Cannon Run and Outoforder. Thev rest of the runners were totally outclassed. The treble was completed with Royal Strider in the last race of the day. The connections backed him down to even-money and their confidence was not misplaced. Royal Strider was shown daylight near the home turn , and lengthened his strides with authority. He obviously did not belong to this class. Rank outsider Masurathi came with a long stretch run and finished a respectable distance behind the winner, while Mauritius Star scrambled close home to save place money. With these three victories, Prakash has taken his expected place at the top of the jockey's table. An exciting finish was witnessed in a sprint race for horses in Class III. Puttanna-trained Spiritofexcellence had performed creditably during summer and was expected to have it easy in this race. She was an odds-on favourite to win this event. Her closest rival was another filly from the Foley stable called Perfect Promise. The two of them had not bargained for the early speed of Fanaa. Fanaa showed the way to Spiritofexcellence and Perfect Promise as the field straightened for home. The front-runner kicked away thereafter and the two fancied fillies were found flat-footed. Suraj Narredu did not give up hope and persevered with the favourite. To the relief of her many supporters, Spiritofexcellence got up on the last stride to win by a "nose". Perfect Promise ended a fair third. Two other races were decided near the winning post. The first was the victory of Alyciaa over Showhorse. In an open betting event, the two fancied runners Worth a Million and Fairy Fantasy were seen trailing the field near the home turn. Alyciaa got the better of Gris Rapide and seemed to have it wrapped up, before Showhorse came with a powerful acceleration to engage her in a duel. Alyciaa lasted out to win by a whisker. Vivek kept his cool while guiding the fortunes of Alyciaa. The other horse to win in a similar fashion was Haley's Comet. Bee for You was sent on a start-to-finish mission in this mile long event. He was chased by Spenderville for most of the way, before he retired. Haley's Comet made a move through the middle, and after a brief struggle, got the better of Bee For You. The latter has had the misfortune of running second four times in his last five starts. Spenderville finished third while Star Of Excellence, after losing a fair bit of ground at the start, acme from last to take the fourth spot. Another race which was expected to go the way of the favourite Giftofachievement, produced a surprising result. Suraj took this three-year old filly, trained by his father, to the front and seemed to be travelling well. Appu-ridden Monarchial was always second while Clap and Run was a faraway third. For no apparent reason, the on-money favourite Giftofachievement stopped in her tracks and gave way to Monarchial. Appu seized the initiative and drove her to a smart victory. Gifofachievement was stopping so badly, that even Clap and Run was able to pass her near the winning post. The favourite is extremely ordinary and should be ignored from the point of view of betting in her future engagements.
