The Mysore Million (Grade III) , a terms race for 3 year olds, was the feature event in a long card of nine races framed for Friday's racing at this centre. This race is an important feature in the Mysore racing calender, and over the years, racegoers have been witness to large fields and intense competition in this well endowed event. The 2008 edition of The Mysore Million saw a small field of three acceptors. The champion filly Kiara from Pesi Shroff's stable was set to give weight to Fantastic Quest and chunks of it to Icebreaker. Kiara was appearing after a string of outstanding performances during the Bangalore Summer Season, and was an obvious choice to lift this trophy. Fantastic Quest had run a good second to Archipenko in the Usha Million, and was expected to be a live threat to Kiara. Icebreaker had run third to Kiara, and since she was at a similar weight advantage as on that day, Icebreaker was totally neglected in the betting ring. Kiara reached the starting gates as a half-money favourite, while Fantastic Quest could be backed at 7/2. Icebreaker was freely available at 9/1. Kiara had been partnered by Christopher Alford during her Bangalore campaign. She had run kindly for him and done everything that he had asked her to do. With Rajendra in the saddle, Kiara was a bit too keen in the initial stages of today's race. The jockey had a tough time trying to settle her down in the first couple of hundred metres of this race. Srinath sent Fantastic Quest into the early lead, while Appu and Icebreaker were ranging on his outside. Kiara was held back in third and was travelling three horses wide as they took the rising ground and entered the straight. Fantastic Quest was a length clear of Icebreaker at this stage. Kiara was another length and a half behind and was seen being asked for an effort. The whips began to fly as they entered the final furlong of the race, with Icebreaker getting the measure of the frontrunner. Kiara could find nothing extra, and it was evident that she was beaten. Icebreaker held on to her advantage and finished ahead of Fantastic Quest and Kiara. Less than one length separated the three horses.Srinath raised an objection against the winner on the grounds of interference, but since it lacked merit, the same was thrown out in quick time. Padmanabhan has done well with Icebreaker, and has been able to reverse the verdict between her and Kiara. This is highly commendable, and it would be interesting to see how Icebreaker progresses from here. The rest of the day's card was dominated by the Gold and Brown colours of Dr MAM Ramaswamy. His horses won five of the other eight events held during the afternoon. The R R Komandur Memorial Trophy was won by a hard ridden Living Luxury from On A Roll. Srinath took this four year old filly to the front and rode skillfully to keep On A Roll at bay. The one to catch the eye was Phoenix Reach. She dragged a helpless Narasimha into third place. A stronger rider on Phoenix Reach would have won this race with a measure of comfort. The Madras Race Club Trophy, a sprint event for horses in Class III, was split into two divisions. The upper division saw Foley trained Sporting Master being opposed by two formidable horses who had won their previous starts, Sunnyland and Powerfuldreams were easy winners in the Summer Season. The betting was confined to these three horses. The penalties imposed by the handicapper seemed to have got the measure of Sunnyland and Powerfuldreams, as Sporting Master drew away from them and was eased up while passing the winning post almost a distance clear of Sunnyland and Powerfuldreams. The lower division witnessed an outstanding performance from Secret Song. The connections must have been very sure of his chances as they entrusted this gelding to Manikandan. They backed him strongly, and despite a flow of big money in the direction of Super Sonic, the bookmakers were reluctant to offer a better price against Secret Song. Smart and Special set a strong pace ahead of Secret Song and Super Sonic, before retiring near the bend. Secret Song cruised into a big lead thereafter and sauntered away for an easy victory. The timing clocked by the winner, and his style of winning, indicated a couple of more wins for him in the near future. Touch Of magic and Rising Fame were the other two winners for the Dr Ramaswamy camp.Gnaneshwar took Touch Of Magic into the early lead and won from end-to-end at the expense of Million Words. Srinath tried very hard with the runner -up, but found nothing extra at a crucial stage of the race. The rest of the runners were totally outclassed with Royal Liason taking the third spot. Rising Fame was lucky to quicken at the right time and put his neck in front at the winning post. Worth a Million had stolen a march and seemed to be holding on to his lead, while Vinod Shinde was struggling to keep Rising Fame on an even keel. Vinod had the good sense of changing his whip from left to right, and the response was immediate. Rising Fame started to gallop on the correct leg, and covered a lot of ground to pip the leader near the final post. Ballerina Girl and Azazel took the minor placings. Chocolate Brownie was an eyecatching second in his earlier start, and was accordingly backed down to firm favouritism. Gnaneshwar was quick to seize the advantage and opened a sizable lead over the others. Chocolate Brownie was in no danger of being caught, as he was being eased up while passing the winning post almost six lengths clear of the rest. Roulette King and Cashfirsttiketnext followed him home. Another impressive winner was the Puttanna trained Mystic Star who won the last race of the day. Apprentice Ashok Kumar rode a neat race on this favourite as he held him back in this mile event, and gave him his head in the last furlong of the race. Mystic Star devoured ground, and won easily from Haley's Comet while Wazzup Dude came with a late run to save place money. Srinath and Gnaneshwar were the two jockeys to ride a brace of winners during the afternoon, but the star of the day was champion trainer Robert Foley who saddled four winners in a nine event card.
