Ponte Romano Springs a Surprise

Trainer Robert Foley's stable continues to play a dominant role in the proceedings of the ongoing Mysore Season 2008. Most of the runners from this lot have been relocated from Ooty, and there is hardly any yardstick to assess their potential. The presence of Srinath in the saddle is taken as a clue by the punters, and they back these horses with great enthusiasm. Mischiefinhiseyes was one such horse, who was sent out as a hot favourite in The H H Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Gold Cup (Div I), the feature event in Thursday's race card at Mysore. Mischiefinhiseyes had good last season form, and was handicapped at an attractive mark. He was backed to the exclusion of his rivals, and was expected to emerge an easy winner of this mile event. He was opposed by a jaded lot of older horses. To the dismay of his many supporters, Mischiefinhiseyes performed poorly, and did not raise a gallop at any stage of the race. He finally ended more than eight lengths behind the winner. Bountiful Beauty made most of the running ahead of Carabinieri, Ponte Romano, Sandokan and Artistic Way, while the favourite was unable to keep up with the early pace of the race. The order remained more or less the same till they straightened for home. Carabinieri made a feeble effort of challenging Bountiful Beauty near the distance post, before retiring from the fray. Mahendran brought Ponte Romano with a fluent run through a well spread out field, and galloped away for an easy victory. Bountiful Beauty stayed on to be second ahead of Sandokan and Brown Sugar. Ponte Romano has been running good races in the recent past and has been kept in top shape by trainer Appachu. Mischiefinhiseyes ran a pathetic race and should be left alone for the rest of this season. The lower division of this event was won by the Foley-trained favourite Newfoundland. Srinath was able to settle him in mid-division, as Red Mustang brought the field into view ahead of Yousnooze Youloose. Newfoundland was produced on the centre of the track and given a tap to find his rhythm. He accelerated smoothly and skipped away from a tiring Red Mustang. The rest of the field was unable to handle the underfoot conditions, and it was left to Mazeppa to come from last position to take the third spot. An interesting finish was witnessed in The Nanie and Sons Gold Cup, a mile race for horses in Class III. Three well-performed youngsters were tackling this trip for the first time in their careers, and were fancied by their respective connections. Although Shroff-trained Chimerique opened as a firm favourite, a flood of money in the direction of Greens, Assert The Right and Spark Of Elegance gave this race an extremely "open" look. Chimerique had won a seven-furlong race in the Bangalore summer season, and was likely to tackle this trip better than the rest. Four year old Assert The Right had equally good credentials. Worth A Gold made the early running ahead of Assert The Right, Greens and Chimerique, while others were finding it tough to keep pace with the front-runners. Srinath on Assert The Right tried to steal this race and led inside the final furlong. Ryan Marshall brought Chimerique into contention, and despite stumbling at a crucial time of this race, was able to get the better of Assert The Right in the final stages of this event. Both Greens and Spark Of Elegance found this mile trip beyond their capabilities, and retired gracefully. Bee For You came from the tail end of the field to be a good third. Warren's charge Your Destiny won the opening event of the day in a close finish from Mr Sunrise. Chinab was fancied strongly, but was a tired horse after making the early running and leading the field into the home stretch. It was left to rank outsider Mr Sunrise to fight out a close battle with Your Destiny, and he was a neck shy at the finish. Shoban Babu rode a strong finish on Your Destiny to emerge a popular victor of this race. Well-bred Stagelight was backed with confidence in a sprint race for horses in class IV. The speedy Swift Sword took a good jump and opened up an early lead over his rivals. The lead kept on increasing as the race progressed. Appu tried very hard with Stagelight to narrow the gap, but found Swift Sword too good on the day. The final verdict was a widening seven lengths. Mister Trooper came with a late bid to take the third place. Spenderville was another favourite to win in the afternoon. His supporters should consider themselves lucky to collect on him, as Auchinlech was given a poor ride by Ryan Marshall. Vinod Shinde took Spenderville on a start-to-finish mission but was collared by Auchinlech near the distance post. The two of them were involved in close duel before Vinod Shinde coaxed Spenderville to produce a little bit extra and get the better of his challenger. Witch Doctor finished third ahead of a disinterested Sun Zone. The latter is in top condition and should be supported when the right money comes on him. However, the connections of Sun Zone landed a neat gamble with their other runner Noble Guest in the last race of the day. Krishnan was a picture of supreme confidence as he piloted this horse to an effortless victory over Zindabad. There was support for Afghan in this race but that was obviously misplaced. The rest of the field was more than a distance behind the winner.
