Wellington Excels in The Varahi Cup

Thundershowers at Mysore on Tuesday afternoon had resulted in the cancellation of the last two races of the day. It had continued to rain till late into the night, and the officially recorded rainfall was in excess of four inches. The race course resembled a lake at that point in time. Most centres would have announced the cancellation of racing scheduled for the following day, but the authorities at The Mysore Race Club wanted to wait. They had immense confidence in the drainage system at their Club, and were hoping for clear skies in the morning. Their optimism was rewarded, when they woke up to bright sunshine. The officials at MRC got down to business, and worked relentlessly to put everything in place. An inspection of the track followed, and the delicate areas were identified. Wide false rails were put in position and the lush green track was ready for racing. The penetrometer reading caused some concern amongst the jockeys, but they were assured that the track was good for racing. The afternoon’s card was delayed by 30 minutes and racing was held successfully. The timings were a bit slow, but that was bound to happen. Most horses that won in the day’s card had been knocking on the door. Full Steele, Lyra, Wellington, Show n Tell and Windsor Square had good current form, and they reproduced it on the track to emerge victorious. The punters were scared of the going, and a bit careful while placing their bets, but then, that was understandable. The MRC authorities must be congratulated for putting up such a commendable show in successfully conducting Wednesday's racing at their centre. The mile-long Varahi Cup was the only trophy event in a card of seven races framed for the day. In an open betting race, Ranjeet-trained Wellington came with a brilliant run and nailed Bee For at the post. Chandrasekhar was content to bide his time on Wellington as Bellezza, Bee For You and Royal Liason brought the field into view. Keeping his mount on an even keel, he pulled out the stick near the distance post, and pushed him to reach the winning post ahead of Bee For You and Royal Liason. The rest of the runners were totally outclassed. This victory completed a quick double for Ranjeet and Chandrasekhar, as they had scored in the earlier race with Show N Tell. This public fancy was inspected by the veterinary doctors at the start before she was permitted to enter the gates. Show N Tell was seen travelling comfortably in fourth spot, as Pancho Pete, Valiant Romeo and Zindabad led into the straight. Chandrasekhar produced Show N Tell on the wide outside, and to the delight of her supporters, she stormed away from her opponents. Panch Pete was able to retain second spot ahead of Zindabad. The upper division of the above race saw the emergence of Blood Stream, a good type of three year-old, who had won both her starts during winter at Mysore. She was accordingly installed as an on-money favourite for this race. Entrusted to apprentice SaddamIqbal, Blood Stream was surrounded by a bunch of speedy horses, and got knocked around in the early stages of the race. She made a feeble challenge in the final furlong of the race, but that was not good enough to catch the front-running Windsor Square, Outclas and Golden Kiss, who had finished in that order. This run of the favourite was too bad to be true. A public announcement, shortly thereafter, confirmed that Blood Stream had burst a blood vessel during the race. Whipless MD Parveen rode an effective race on Windsor Square. His riding was even better in the next race, when he brought Cafe Coffee on the wide outside and ran way from a high-class field of eight milers. Sandokan and Bountiful Beauty did their usual front-running, but were found flat-footed when they were challenged by the eventual winner. This was the third victory for Cafe Coffee in the last few months. Fancied Stampede was unable to reproduce his earlier form and finished off the board. The other division of this mile event for horses in the highest class at Mysore was won by the Lyra, who had been unlucky on two previous occasions. She had won a race earlier in the season, but had lost it in the Stewards room. In her next start, she was beaten near the winning post by Bountiful Beauty. She gave her supporters another shock when she was unable to keep up with the others during the initial stages of today's race. She was racing at the rear end of the field, and had the misfortune of scraping the false rails in the backstretch. However, she was fortunate to find herself in front as she came with a strong run to nail the leader Artistic Way at the post. Ekagra and Yousnooze Youloose were also seen to be making up good ground at the end. They finished in the above order, with a little more than a length separating the first four runners. Lyra won this race by a "nose" from Artistic Way. The biggest surprise during the afternoon was the victory of Babbu The Sly. This horse had been unable to touch the board in his last ten starts, and was friendless in the field of a dozen runners. Jockey Gnaneshwar was amazed at the new-found capabilities of this horse, as Babbu The Sly carried the heavy impost on his back with relative ease, and cantered away to an effortless victory. A reproduction of this run should see Babbu The Sly winning another race in the near future.
