Sincerity Pips Way To Wealth on the Post

Racing at Mysore was cancelled last week owing to "paucity of acceptors". The trainers were more enthusiastic this time and racegoers were greeted with a well-filled card of eight events on Wednesday. Most races had 12 runners, the maximum that are permitted to participate in a race at that centre. The recent monsoon showers had rendered the track in perfect shape for racing. The F B Sharma Memorial Gold Cup was the only trophy event in the day’s card. It was a race for horses that are 6-year old and over in class IV. Twelve runners accepted to face the starter with Way To Wealth occupying the favouritism ahead of the rest. This horse had run a good third on the opening day of the season, and that too, after receiving a check during the running of that race. There was late support for Cruise Control and Sneak Preview while the others were available at fancy odds. Allowing On Her Toes and Super Chieftain to lead the field into the straight, Vinod Shinde tapped Way To Wealth and took over the running. At that stage, when it seemed as though he was kicking away from the rest, jockey Melvyn urged Sincerity to go in chase of the leader. Although the gap was fairly big, it started to diminish with each stride. Sincerity got up in the last few metres to win by a neck from Way To Wealth. Pat On The Back came with a long stretch run to occupy the third slot ahead of San Gimminano. This being his second successive failure, it may be fruitful for punters to back this horse when the connections decide to campaign Way To Wealth at a low weight in the higher class. This victory enabled Vishal Yadav to complete a quick double for the day, as he had won earlier in the afternoon with Victory Queen. She was the easiest winner of the day, when she trounced her five opponents over a scurry. Since Chamcha In Chief and Shining Beauty were course scratchings, only six runners faced the starter. Ravinder Singh was a picture of confidence as he sat unperturbed on her, and was content to stay at the rear end of the field till they straightened for home. Victory Queen was still on tight reins as she shot through the pack and took over the running. The jockey was seen looking around as she went past the post, and on this showing, Victory Queen can be selected to win again in her next outing. Dashing Affair and Bossy Boss followed her at a respectable distance. Another trainer who distinguished himself was Monappa, who saddled two winners during the afternoon. He pitted the recently acquired Azazel over a sprint in the opening race of the day. With apprentice Madhu Babu guiding his fortunes, Azazel was smartest out of the gates, and after being held back for a while, was given his head at the 400-metre marker. The response was immediate as Azazel shot away from the favourite Sunlaa, and clocked in many lengths clear of him. Mehek was a faraway third. His second winner, Time Is Life, was the more impressive of the two. In a race in which racegoers were not ready to look beyond the Darashah-trained Bold Promise, Time Is Life was allowed to run at 10/1. Bold Promise had won a fortnight back and his style of victory had suggested that he would win again. He was backed down to odds-on favouritism. Gnaneshwar positioned Bold Promise in box seat as they took the final bend, and rushed him to the front near the distance post. Time Is Life was always in fourth position and started to gain ground on the favourite. After a brief tussle, it was evident that the favourite was beaten. Vijay Kumar was effective on the winner as he kept him going till the end. Time Is Life was an insipid performer during the winter, and with this victory today indicated that he is back to his old form. Outoforder ran an impressive third. An outstanding performance came from Dancer's Wave in the fourth race of the day. This Darashah trainee is the highest rated 3-year old at Mysore and was set to give chunks of weight to his opponents. These included San Siro, who had beaten Dancer's Wave during winter. The odds against Dancer's Wave began to expand as there was good support for San Siro. The race itself produced a thrilling spectacle as both Gnaneshwar on Dancer's Wave and Appu on San Siro fought out every inch of ground. Finally, it was Dancer's Wave who just held on by a neck. The rest of the field was outclassed. With this victory, Dancer's Wave has reached the highest class at Mysore. San Siro has displayed that she is capable of winning at her current mark and should be strongly supported hereafter. The last race of the day produced another thrilling finish as Laguna Blue and Cafe Coffee were locked together as they flashed past the winning post. In the years gone by, Laguna Blue had performed creditably and won a couple of sprint races while facing top-class opposition in Bangalore. He subsequently lost his form and was relegated to campaign in Mysore. He displayed his abilities by coming from the rear of the field, and getting the nod from the judge at the all important end. He was able to hold the apprentice ridden Cafe Coffee at bay. The latter was a bit unlucky as he did not get a clear run, and had to be produced on the wide outside in the final stages of the race. Makar Sankraanti and Outclas won the other two events in the day's card.
