Darashah Saddles Five in a Row

The small and compact Mysore Summer Season started with a bang for trainer Z Darashah, who saddled five back-to-back winners during the afternoon. The fact that he has the best and biggest string of Mysore-based horses is not a secret. His yard houses the better three-year olds at that centre. In fact, it was learnt that he was quite happy to hand over the reins of his Bangalore string to his son Neil and concentrate solely on Mysore racing. The fact that this hardworking trainer is a bad tipster was proved once again when three of his winners today were backable at fancy odds. All three won at the expense of hugely fancied first favourites from his own stable. The trend for the day was set in the first race itself, when a zero rated horse called Celerity romped home to the delight of the bookmakers. The favourite in this race Cashfirsttiketnext was given a very ordinary ride by apprentice Sreekanth. This young boy had fractured a bone in a racing accident last year and thereafter taken leave to continue his studies. The fact that the connections decided to give this fancied ride to him was surprising. He was unable to push the horse at any stage of the race, and was a mute spectator as Cashfirsttiketnext dragged him into second place. The Midnight Cowboy Cup, a sprint race for maiden three-year olds was the feature event in the day's card. Darashah's first timer New Edge opened as a firm favourite but was soon displaced as money started to flow in the direction of Mellbourne Lady. The latter had run a good race in her first start in the middle of February. Hail Mikhail was taken on a start-to-finish mission by Rajesh Babu and it became very evident at the distance post that he was not going to be caught by the other runners. Mellbourne Lady was in close attendance till that point before packing up and permitting New Edge to go in chase of his runaway stablemate. Hail Mikhail won easily from New Edge while the others were totally outclassed. Special Gallery and Gnaneswar started the winning sequence for Darashah by easily winning the second race in a seven-event card. Gnaneshwar held up the top-weighted gelding till the final 100 metres before giving him his head and cantering away from Gypsy's Advise and the front-running Outclas. Special Gallery should repeat in his next start. In the next race, stable jockey Gnaneshwar chose to ride the favourite Champion's League while the other runner from the yard, Valiant Romeo was entrusted to rookie G Vijay. Making full use of his allowance, Vijay took Valiant Romeo to the front and lasted out to peg back Champions League by the narrowest of margins. Third placed Show n Tell seemed to need this run and shall be worth following in the future. The stable completed the hat-trick with on-money favourite Bold Promise who cruised home ahead of Exceptional and the early leader South Leo. Mint Royal was the fifth winner for them. This speedy front-runner went ahead and seemed to be tiring near the end. Zooming. Satin Slipper and Irish Whispers were closing in with each stride but the winning post came to the rescue of the leader. A little over a length separated the first four runners. The day’s proceedings came to an end with another outsider getting up in the final few strides to beat the favourite. Armament looked outstanding amongst the ten runners that had accepted to face the starter. He had worked well and was supported accordingly. Apprentice Khurshad on Armament was content to allow Cafe Coffee to lead into the straight before taking over the running and opening up a fair gap. His horse started to shorten his strides in the last few metres of the race and Cafe Coffee came with a re-run to nail the favourite on the post. The speedy Heroism did the front-running and faded into third place.
