The chairman of Royal Calcutta Turf Club since 2007, Mr. Cyrus Madan decided to step down from his post and announced the same at the Club’s AGM on Saturday. He further proposed the name of Mr. Deepak Khaitan as the new chairman and the latter was duly elected to the honorary post by the board at the conclusion of the meeting. Madan denied any personal issues as a reason for his resignation. He felt a change after a fairly long stint as the chairman would be beneficial for the Club. “When I took over in 2007, the Club was facing bankruptcy. With the help of a good team, we turned all that around. There were only about 300 horses at that time and 70 percent of these were shared by the two well-known colours (meaning MAM and Khaitan). Now there are over 525 horses stabled here and quite a few more big names among the owners,” said the man who pulled RCTC’s chestnuts out of the fire. Cyrus Madan will, however, continue to remain on the board of RCTC and function as a Steward. “Racing is my passion and I want to always see Calcutta (a city which is very close to my heart) holding its pride of place in the sport of kings,” concluded Madan.
