Afea Has No Bar of Distance Whatsoever

The pattern of running was the same but the distance and class were different. No matter what, it seemed everything was in his reach when Afea (Pennine Ridge – First Love) completed an encore in the Hyderabad Race Club Cup at the Delhi races on Tuesday. Victor's trainer Manbir Singh, who has the best strike rate so far, earned his double through Chandelier. Saddler Kazim Ali Khan and his younger son jockey Danish Ali Khan, who turned 19 on the day, also shared a brace each. Afea began his task for the five-furlong contest at the seventh position and the big purse appeared out of his reach till the final furlong.

But stretching out like a rubber under the guidance of Irfan Ali thereafter left the leader Gin And Tonic with wide open mouth for the runner-up berth. Earlier, Afea had shown no mercy over the mile in Class Two last week. Gin And Tonic, whose pace was broken by Enya, was even finding it difficult to hold Sonic Boom. Ka Ching ran on to be an impressive fourth. Ashwa Prithvi (Mischevious Music – Royal Troon) had his task cut short due to the withdrawal of the favourite Golden Route in the day's opener, The Malakpet Plate. However, the juvenile was seen struggling for regaining the leader's slot from Abdullah inside the final furlong.

Vasconia and Sultan Ayubi bear watching. A scintillating turn of foot enabled Chandelier (Hymn – Sizzlig Thoughts) find his winning shoes after a gap of many years in The Andhra Pradesh Plate. A brilliant piece of riding by jockey Richard Smith helped The Dukes (Classic Tale – Red Rosette) to wrap up the upper event of The Charminar Plate by taming Assertive at the wire. Lilly, who finished third, should soon strike. The run of Trusted Friend should be ignored. The lower division of the plate saw a close finish between Beatrice (San Francisco – Blue Sonata) and Blue lagoon.

Danish, who drove the former, succeeded by a whisker. Blue lagoon should make amends. Kohinoor Beauty finished fourth behind Firecracker, and will be in different shape in the next outing. Jockey Rajinder showed his brilliance on Genius Boy (Kly Green – Island Mist), who foiled the start-to-finish bid of Dazzling Wise in the senior division of The Secunderabad Plate. Unfortunately, El Toro and Beach Rain reared up as the starter flagged-off and took no practical part in the competition. Belfagour (Danish astride) emerged victorious in the junior division of the plate.
