Naughty Lass sprang a surprise in notching up a scintillating win in the Global stud Million, which was made for the maiden horses, at the Delhi races on Tuesday. Magan Singh, who trained the victor, succeeded in leading-in two more runners. English jockey Richard Smith celebrated his comeback to the Indian racing circuit with a creditable double along with the saddler Ishwar Singh Parmar. After finishing one better in the 1000 Guineas' field of nine, the daughter of Epicentre and Nautilus was in with the reputation of being one of the rank-outsiders. However, the run she produced was unbelievable. She got into the act by sitting close third to Ashwa Prisha and Rock Solid till the top of the homestretch of the seven-furlong target.

As soon as the leader started huffing and puffing and Rock Solid started drifting out alarmingly, Pawan Sharma helped the mount to breeze past them. It appeared that a lack of racing advantage came as a stopper for the debutant runner-up Rock Solid. With the benefit of a gallop, he is expected to attain his class in future. Ashwa Parwez, the hot favourite, ran on to be fourth behind late-finishing Supreme Victory. The Global Stud-sponsored day witnessed a huge crowd in the race course and Chandrapal Singh-saddled gelding Ashwa Panchhi made his connections (Mrs Anita Chauhan and Ravinder Pal singh Chauhan, who was the sponsor) very proud when she powered away in the day's opener, the Sam Bahadur Cup.

The son of Hammerstein and Airwave has the strides which suit even a longer distance. However, Ashwa Aparna and Golden Route were the most impressive runners who shared the second and third position respectively. Valour, whose jockey lost the whip nearing the final furlong, bears watching. Magan Singh's Gin And Tonic (Hammerstein - Celine Dion) eventually achieved success as she slammed the door on Sonic Boom in The Prithiraj Chauhan cup. The much-obliged Enya, who was expected to justify the favouritism after having had a forward run in The President of India Cup, was seen struggling for strides and was displaced further by Ashwa Pratap.

Ishwar Singh Parmar's trainee Absolut (Black Cash – Angara) landed spoilsport in a start-to-finish attempt in the upper division of The Maharana Pratap Cup. Jockey Richard Smith displayed his elegance on Victory Star (Senure – Victory March) by bringing the mount from tail-end to run Imagine down by three-parts-of-a-length in the lower division of the Cup. Jockey Suresh Kumar had an armchair ride on Firecracker (Libor – Star Celebrity) in the senior division of The Rajiv Gandhi Memorial cup. In the division two of the cup, which was the concluding event of the day, Richard Smith once again showed his prowess on Classic Spirit (Hymn – Spirit Of Patxi).
