RWITC to probe Sandesh’s ride on Juliette. Read more….

21 Dec 2021

The Stewards of RWITC have an inquiry into the running and riding of Juliette, the hot favorite who finish second owing to the allegedly, belated effort by her jockey A Sandesh in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup race held at the Mahalaxmi race course on Sunday.

“Yes we have open an inquiry on the handling of favorite Juliette” Chief Stipendiary Stewards Shujjat Hussain told TOI on Monday.

In the 2400 meter race Sandesh kept Juliette far back in a seven horse field for most of the journey and pushed her only nearing the home stretch. Juliette accelerated brilliantly and overtook all the rivals but failed to catch the front running eventual winner Alluring Silver and finished second.

When asked by the stewards, sources say even Juliette’s trainer Karthik Ganapathy expressed disappointment over the handling of his mare by Sandesh.

Nelson Reuben sadly passed away earlier today in Calcutta. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest jockeys to have graced the Calcutta turf in the seventies and eighties. His unique style of horsemanship fetched him classics galore. Perhaps the one most recalled by oldtimers was his victory atop Topmost in the Indian Derby of 1974. Nelson lived up to his name and enjoyed a huge fan following all over the country during an era  when  Calcutta jockeys ruled the roost- his contemporaries Robin Corner and Richard Alford to name a couple of others. Nelson will always be remembered fondly by local railbirds.

Finally Btc has got the license to conduct offcourse betting. It's a part time license, only from Sept 1 to 16. It will be renewed once the club agrees to the conditions of the government regarding the shifting and the compromise petition before the supreme court in its egm on Sept 16. It's a big relief from btc's point of view and hopefully all goes well and racing continues after Sept 16 too.
