Joyride horse tests positive for Glanders in Chennai. Read more…

16 May 2026

A popular joyride horse in Chennai has died after catching glanders, a serious and highly contagious disease that can spread to both horses and humans. The infection was confirmed by national animal health experts, and now Tamil Nadu is stepping up efforts to contain it.

Authorities isolate and test Chennai horses

Authorities are isolating all horses that had contact with the infected one, and around 140 joyride horses in Chennai are being tested. Teams are on the ground, and rapid response teams will be formed. There's concern this case could be linked to recent outbreaks in Karnataka. There is high alert to keep things safe for both animals and people.

Nelson Reuben sadly passed away earlier today in Calcutta. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest jockeys to have graced the Calcutta turf in the seventies and eighties. His unique style of horsemanship fetched him classics galore. Perhaps the one most recalled by oldtimers was his victory atop Topmost in the Indian Derby of 1974. Nelson lived up to his name and enjoyed a huge fan following all over the country during an era  when  Calcutta jockeys ruled the roost- his contemporaries Robin Corner and Richard Alford to name a couple of others. Nelson will always be remembered fondly by local railbirds.

Finally Btc has got the license to conduct offcourse betting. It's a part time license, only from Sept 1 to 16. It will be renewed once the club agrees to the conditions of the government regarding the shifting and the compromise petition before the supreme court in its egm on Sept 16. It's a big relief from btc's point of view and hopefully all goes well and racing continues after Sept 16 too.
