In big races like Derby, what matters is class, class and class. I am also a beneficiary of Tororosso's great run!

@Monty Gaikwad,

Seems you are big fan of Tororoso! Well, let us hope that the horse maintains consistency.

Tororoso for Indian derby? Extremely doubtful. And, I do not think, trainer and owner will try Indian derby. I think late entry charges are quite high at MUM>

But, Tororoso may run in Invitation cup (Bangalore) 5th March! Check up what is the flight charges/train charges. If you think that the journey strain and expenses are worth, then you are welcome to watch the race live.

Thank God .nobody came with negative comments like the race was fixed or gifted like that.
First Kudos to Mrs Silva storai about whom Irfan mentioned after the race that she only nurtured the horse in the track very patiently day in and day out.He said that it is a temperamental and difficult horse to train.
Mr captain had stated that both the top jockeys cut their throat each other hurrying their horses to the front and they never allowed any pacemaker to overtake it.That was a right comment made by him.It made very easy for the winner.
But a big question is whether this type of horses will run consistently in coming races.I firmly believe no.There is a similarity between these two horses Temerity and Tororosso. behavior.

Friends

I was one of the few people yesterday who had immense faith in the abilities of Tororosso and expected him to do well in the Derby although Such a emphatic win was beyond my comprehension since it was only the third run of his life.I had belief on his abilities that he would rewrite history in Bangalore but a lot of people smirked at me earlier in the day when I shared my choice with them.

A good horse bred in purple as indicated by Major in his Pre-derby write up on this website made all who didn't know, aware that the horse had the bloodlines to do it.

However a good horse who is not coming on hand requires a lot of perseverance from the part of the trainer , his team and patience and Tororosso was one such specimen .

This is where the work done by Irfan and his team is exemplary and worth applauding by all lovers of the sport. The team worked through two seasons to get the horse right and achieved success in late part of the last year.

Tororosso served notice of his abilities in the 2000 Guineas whilst finishing close to his experienced peers under a not so famous rider. His infamous tantrums ensured that Irfan could not get a better jockey than Irvan Singh there to ride him but the horse showed that the rider above did not matter, what mattered was what he was capable of doing when he gets going on his job.

I watched the race very closely yesterday like all Irfan fans and was happy that Neeraj chose to ride him out of the field all throughout so that he did not face any impediment or checks in the race being a big made horse.

Coming past the 3 furlong marker, it was clear that He was travelling the best and Neeraj was having a tough time controlling his surge to go ahead. Past the final furlong marker the scene changed within seconds and the year of hard work of Irfan and his team showed out to the world in those few seconds that Impossible is just a word in the dictionary and that true hard work and perseverance gives results almost always.

Having trained with Irfan and watched the work associated with running of the stable to produce good to outstanding horses, it is really commendable that this horse proved him correct.

This sport was we all know is famous for its glorious uncertainties and that is the reason all of us follow it but victories like that of Tororosso yesterday makes this sport what it is for all of us horse lovers to love it and endear it to all of us leave aside the gambling aspect.

Hats off to the team of Irfan Ghatala, Mrs. Silva, Punit and the rest for the great victory and wish them all the best for the future assignments of the their ward.

God Bless and Enjoy the Success.

Hats off to Major Srinivas Nargolkar ....
It was his article on Bangalore Derby that made me look at TOROROSSO.... and thankfully I played it.
As he made us all aware of the outstanding family that TOROROSSO comes from it had to be him (specially in this set of horses) if he had come to hand which he had and not like in the first few runs where he was misbehaving and dislodging riders.
I guess he will improve further.
Thanks Major.....

@ Chanakya

According to printed records available, Pyare Miya's starting price in Indian Derby was 8/1. He paid Rs. 32.50 for win and Rs. 8 for place (Rs. 5 Tote).

I know the ring prices vary book to book but if somebody offered 50/1 on Pyare Miya on the Derby, he is must have been a very generous man.

Thanks Chanakya for mentioning about Pyare Miya. Thanks to Indian-turf-record also.

I had heard about Pyare Miya. Zero win before derby win; and zero win there after. But had totally forgotten about that.

So, Tororoso was at 6.50. BNG tote paid 97.

@Srinivasan,

Tororoso was not a totally hidden horse. There were two or three other papers too that had mentioned Tororoso as 3rd choice. But, majority of punters strongly believed that Morgan, Batallion, Proserpine will grab the top 3 slot & vacancy is for the 4th place only.

Tororosso - First Maiden to win the Winter Derby at Bangalore

Facts:

1. Tororosso has the honour of being the first maiden horse to win the Bangalore Winter Derby. (What a resounding win.)

3.The Irfan Ghatala team has the honour of a superlative training performance in that Irfan will go down in the record book of training the first maiden Bangalore Derby (Winter)winner.

3.Previously, at Bangalore, the Summer Derby was won by Mauritius Pearl who dead heated with Skyline.

Tororosso - Previous Form.

The facts are that this horse has won the Derby at just his 3rd run.

a)His first run (non-run)was plagued by his poor behaviour prior to coming under starters orders, where he over reacted to the whole occasion and was withdrawn.

b) After much hard work to control his errant ways and to channel his nervous energy (a great patient feat by the Irfan Ghatala team)he was brought back to the races and this time, despite still being a difficult ride and exhibiting some "headstrong bad habits", was competitive but was his own enemy.

c)The connections still kept the faith (based on Ghatala's recommendation that this horse was special)and despite considering a change in training, the horse was entered for the BTC 2000 Guineas.

d)At the time, none of the "top jockeys" wanted to take the ride on Tororosso despite Irfan's attempt to persuade them about this horse's potential and ability. That was how a jockey like Irvan Singh obtained the ride on Toro in the Guineas.

e) Irfan did tell anyone who would listen that this horse was capable of winning the Guineas but would get even better over a longer trip.

f) Despite being a maiden and still showing some immaturity (at just the 2nd race run of his life), Tororosso flashed upto the front runners and looked ominous at the 250m in the Guineas. The writing was on the wall, that this was no ordinary maiden !

g)Prior to the Derby, Irfan gave him the dream Derby preparation and the horse responded like only good horses do. Give his best and then some more !
Despite this confidence, a number of top jockeys refused the ride, expressing concerns about the danger of riding the horse.

h) Pre-Derby, Irfan Ghatala was quietly confident but informed all his connections that despite his maiden status, Tororosso could win the Derby. The fact that the horse's odds stayed around the 6 and 7 to 1 mark, demonstrates the confidence that some folks had in Irfan.

i)Tororosso travelled 4 to 5 wide for almost the entire journey, running perhaps 25m to 50m more than any other horse. Despite this wide journey, he absolutely blitzed this Derby field containing multiple Derby, Oaks and 1000/2000 Guineas winners and placegetters.
The penny has dropped.

j) The horse had done his owners, jockey and most importantly his trainer, proud. The story has it that the usually passionate Ghatala sat quietly watching the race until Tororosso flashed passed the post about 6+ lengths in front, and then it was noticed that an emotional Ghatala had shed a tear or two as the whole occasion and triumph got to him.

Breeding (Major's review was comprehensive)
Tororosso is bred to be a a versatile horse who should be able to win from 1600m to 2400. He has shown that he can do what his master asks of him. I hope that Irfan Ghatala and his team will handle this horse superbly and guide him to achieve his full potential.

This horse could be one out of the box !

good disguise to tell the world that u backed the winner at good odds

but in this world of 4G, pedigree query pointer and platform, you failed to tell the world, before hand.

but u know, after race glories are laughed upon, rather than appreciated....

The maiden Indian Derby winner was Pyare Miya. Some months back you had referred to him as Pyare Mian.

First let me clarify that I have completely given up attending races. However, during my previous attendance I have always bet on Irfan Ghatala's horses on days when Classics were held. I can say with absolute confidence, 8 out of 10 times, he would score at least on one horse. Punters who knew this would have put some money on the Derby winner today. This tip is for your notebook which may get some profits to you in future.

Pyare Miyan won Indian Derby as a maiden.
Tororosso also won as a maiden.

While Pyare Miyan was 50/1 in the ring, I got only 13/2 for Tororosso...

There was no internet, no pedigree query, pedigree pointer or a platform to disseminate knowledge and info that time...

THE HINDU paper headlines were

Captain Morgan and Tororosso may fight out the finish of the B.N. Gudiyappa Bangalore Derby (2,400m), the stellar attraction of the races to be held here on Thursday (Jan. 26).

Idont think any other paper/tipster qouted Tororosso and sevaral times it was indicated in track (Head lines).
This is for your information

First no hard luck stories except mine [had backed Bold march for a place, moment I saw money coming on it knew I am sunk].There seems to be some basic hang up with this stable as far Favs are concerned..
PSC you have enough money but riding for them is giving you a bad name.WHY?

T''SSO beat Battalion fair and square in the mock race but that mental block of a maiden winning a derby came in the way!

Congrats to the breeder a lucky one [could not sell this horse as out priced]Lucky and to Irfan for top condition of him inspite of a set back.

My say that capt morgan will not stay and is only for 2000 mtrs comes true.

Why Prosperine was backed from 10 to 5 to 1 beats me.

Dear all even though I backed torrorosso for win it was disappointing to see Trevor and Suraj cuttting each other's throats. They had nothing in the tank in the last 200 mtrs. These were the two favourites.
This Is not what good riders do.

@Ramiyer,

Tororoso!

Let us see the previous runs. Twice board out and a 3rd in third start to Batallion. Today 2400 meters ran like a champion.

Congrats to winning team (Ghatala/Neeraj).

Record masters to please quote earlier instances if any where a winless horse has won the Derby.
