Response To Crk's Query

By Larry | 01-Mar-2017
Hello CRK,
Answering your question about race 5, my initial toss up was between Adeline, Grey Flannel, and Zinfandelle, and out of the three I knocked off GF, because Zinfandelle was the winner in race 148, and in a situation like this I always prefer the winner over one who has placed 2nd or 3rd, neverthless, I worked out raw timings for all three based on the weights carried, making adjustments for penetrometer reading, and converting race 148 timing over 1200, and the same are as follows.
Adeline(race163) 1:12:90
Grey Flannel(race148) 1:13:06
Zinfandelle(race148) 1:13:51
Not much of a difference between Adeline and Grey Flannel now as Z'delle shows up about 4 lts inferior to them.

Since the distances varied I didn't feel that working out fractional timings would help, though I could have done that using Grey Flannel's run over 1200 but the timing in that race was bad, so I skipped that, and moved over to comparing the runs with horses of higher ratings, and that's when I noticed Adeline's superiority.

What I worked out there is as follows....
Adeline clocked 1:12:34 in race 163.
D.Prances. clocked 1:10:11 in race 162.
Both carried almost similar weights.
Diff. of approx 13lts.
D.prances was rated 115, so 115-(13*2) works out a notional rating of 89 for Adeline.

Race 148, Zinfandelle @51.5 clocked 59.69
Race 146, Danny Crane @55 clocked 1:11:47
If I convert Z'delle's timing to 1200m, and at the weight DC was carrying, it works out to 1:13:02, and that's a difference of 9.5 lts.
DC was rated 92 in that race, so that's a rating of 92-(9.5*2) which is 73, for Z'delle.

And that's how I zeroed in on Adeline.

Hope that helped.

@Larry,
Did we interact on this forum?If we take 1l as 0.18 secs(to be precise) for 1200 mtrs 1l is roughly 0.18/7 ie 2.6 Rating points.So 115-13*2.6 is 81 and 92-9.5*2.6 ie 67.Difference 14 minus 4 difference in Weights 10 Rating points is 3.8L OR 0.69Secs actual 0.65Secs.
Your idea of comparing with another race timing is a new concept which will be useful in many cases.

While I will not take away larry' s analysis, the reason that Adeline had the measure of both is because of the width of the false rails and the consequential draw. Both factors not considered. Please keep this up. Though I may be old in the tooth , having been a rail bird for over 4 decades, I continue to learn from you guys.

Many Thanks

@ Larry,

Thanks for your help in clearing my doubts, and I really appreciate it. your decision to compare the runs with horses of higher ratings was a good one, especially who have run on the same day.

I wonder if you are familiar with 'Internal Fraction Advantage'-JIM LEHANE.
Am a little stuck up here as we dont get the fractional timings of all horses, except the winners.
Thanks Larry,keep posting whenever possible.
