Gst And Horse Racing

By Venu | 13-Apr-2017

Now that Racing Season has almost come to an end shall we take up the long pending issue on GST and Horse Racing. How are we as punters going to be affected. Can we still be in the game or are the rules stacked against the punters. Off late we hear only a handful of die hard punters left in Mumbai. Bangalore left with tote betting means low dividends. Delhi, Madras. Ooty not worth attending. Hyderabad again low dividends at the tote. Dont know about the bookies operating there. What can we expect from July.

@Fearless punter,

You could have opened a new topic. This thread is regarding gst.

Anyway, let me try to answer. Whatever I say is only my guess or hearsay.

Horse owners are having some financial strength and they do not worry too much about increase in stable fee. They just direct their accounts staff, "Pay the goddamn stable charges".

So, your expectation that owners simply take away the donkeys in the disguise of horses because oh higher stable charges is somewhat unrealistic & far fetched.

Raghavan sir,I don't know how punters will get affected but I have a solution for race clubs all over india,and that would to increase stable fees for horses of both local and outstation horses as this will improve the quality of racing as non tries will have to spend more money. I have only six years experience in racing so guide me if I am wrong.But I think it's only solution for clubs.

@CRK,

Thanks for the info. 18% you say, but unconfirmed. As stop fooling has said in this regard, 18% is proposed by GST Governing Council. Seems our speculation about the possible tax rate is narrowing down.

Dekhenge. Till June 30, status quo. Let us learn to adjust to the new slab from 1st July.

@stop fooling punter,

There are some people who are worried about highest tax slab of 40% being slapped on punters. Even I was wondering whether it shall not be better to stop betting. In the race course also, there are some who are angrily saying that let them make it even 100%. We are not fools to come and donate hard earned money to those wolfs and sharks. The point is, ever since the Government displayed its might through demo, punters to a great extent are scared about the possibility of high tax slab against them. Such posts will definitely help them shake off the gloomy scenario they are worried about. Even then there are some purists who think that whatever anyone says on the subject without waiting for actual Government order in black and white is only an exercise in futility from idle writers. Of course they may be right in their own way. Let them come with their reply only after the order is passed by the Government. Only those who do not consider that it is cruel waste of time discussing the pros and cons of this or that slab are welcome to give their inputs here.

Venu has started a topic that is actually worrying a good number of punters. Only crk, you and myself have replied. Short and sweet. Others definitely have much more serious things to attend to. Let us not bother about what they think about us OR what they do not think about us. If they think we are all idle writers, so be it.

In any case, only 3 people replying is not bad at all. If you see topics during the past one/two month, you will notice several of them have just two or still lower number of responses. If the purists think that we are all idle writers who keep writing here and what we write is not worth bothering, that is their pleasure. In fact we should be thankful to them.

So you say Mid May. Let us wait and see.

The facts and no gossip or long letters.

Present status 18 % proposed by GST governing council. Final decision in mid May.
Vivek Jain to lead team asking for reduction.[Futile work.
]So please let us not have this or that for racing or what some think should be the slab.
No one is bothered what some idle writers keep writing here.S wait till Mid May

@Venu,

One mr Rakesh had started discussion on the gst rates applicable to betting. He said 40%. I said then one punter less. Then Chanakya intervened to say the slab most likely to be implemented is 28%.

4 slabs of gst are 5,12,18 & 28%. I am sure everybody knows that. 40% gst only in extreme cases. So we can safely dismiss that. 5% too unrealistic, That also can be dismissed. So gst for betting could be 12, 18 or 28%.

We need not indulge in any guess work. Let the orders come. Let the clubs implement that. Thereafter we can speak.

Just one line on the possible effect if the 28% slab is thrust on us. There will be 7 to 10% extra payable by us towards club commission. So, 35 to 38% gone the moment we buy one ticket.

At present, club charges plus betting tax is 44% for jp, treble. So, those who are regularly buying the jp/treble tickets may welcome the prospect of higher take home.
