Reported to be 51 years of age, Robert Hannam is back for another stint in India, twenty one years after he steered Jai Jaidev to an unplaced finish at the Bangalore Summer meeting of 1996. The New Zealander rode 206 winners in India from 789 mounts for a healthy strike rate of 26%. In his most recent season in his home country his strike rate was 6.7%.
He has started his second innings in fine fashion with a win astride Eternal Angel at Hyderabad, where he will be based.

My comments were for information purposes only, and not by way of any endorsement. As regards Hannam's record at Bangalore Summer 1996, my copy of Fonns is temporarily inaccessible and I will comment further as soon as I am able to retrieve it.
That said, the shortage of quality Indian riders is self-evident!

According to Fonn's All India Racing Record, R.J. Hannam had 12 rides during the Bangalore Summer Meeting of 1996. His twelfth ride was on a horse called SUPREME VICTOR who placed third in Esuire Plate on 26 May 1996. That same season, Jai Jaidev ran thrice during Bangalore Summer Season but was never ridden by R.J. Hannam.
Vasant Shinde did ride Jai Jaidev (3 Nov 1996)but his last ride was on Carnival Park in Cordon Bleu Plate on 28 Dec 1996. This is manually computed so subject to error. Any later ride of Vasant Shinde will be acknowledged with thanks.

it is sad that we still chase white skinned moth balled jockeys of the past and do not want to move ahead.waht can a 50 plus jockey give to indian racing.
Ther are so many Local jockeys here waiting for a chance yet we will not encourage them.
We do not want to move forward but keep going back.Look at R ahmed and Dhube.
Sad that a top trainer has no desire to try new jockeys.
When will racing get out of these shackles

Hannam was an ordinary rider when he was riding in the 90's, based in Hyderabad. Only because he was engaged by a leading stable, he was able to get so many (206) winners in India....more or less like owners Gogineni engaging M A Gallagher at the same centre for one season and reaping a rich harvest.
I somehow see Haanam as a mediocre jockey, having witnessed him riding on many occasions. That final punch will not be available in his hands. Also, an expert to return a loser odds-on. (You can see many of them during this season).
I think our focus should be on a jockey like C Umesh (from Chennai/Ooty) who won the inaugural race against an oddson favourite, and that too ridden by Trevor. Umesh has a great future, if only popular connections absorb him at various centres. I remember this is how A Imran Khan started from Chennai and Ooty and today you can see him riding in almost all the race-courses.

Age is not a problem for any sports as long as the passion and health allows them.
Eg.Roger federer, Venus williams, Mithali Raj.to name a few.

We were lucky to met him at invitation weekend at bangalore. Anil sir having ocean of knowledge regarding horse racing especially breeding, Pedigrees and he had covered the invitation in The Hindu newspaper as well. Very calm and ready to answer our queries.

It is OK we need to acknowledge and respect such professionals past performance. But it does not mean to give such fellows more importance than it deserve. He prolonged his career when other jockeys of his age retired or turned in to other fields. The way the Hyd commentator yesterday done a story recital, and now you, there is an impression he is at his prime at this age and going to win several wins. On the contrary his services whoever retained him shall be utilised for training and feed back. This is my personal opinion.
