Respected friends,
In my opinion most people gives there selections without any criteria.
To my knowledge While selecting a horse to win or at least to become 2nd one should take into account the following point .
1. Previous running of a horse
2. Latest track work/Mock race
3 . Pegigree
4. Jockey's merit.
5. Trainers record
6. Distance and their timing. If we have fair knowledge for the above mentioned points we can eliminate more horses from the card and we left only 2 or three for selection.Out of this we have to select one best horse that can probably win or atleast become 2nd or 3rd based on one's good time and luck.
Most of the time my selections are coming 1st or 2nd or at time third.Some time out of board also.

@ TRS,
According to my observations:
1. Previous running works most of the time.
2. Latest track work does not work. Mostly hidden or incomplete.
3. Pedigree works especially in stake and classic races.
4. Jockeys merit works with junior or apprentice but not with seasoned jockeys who's reins are controlled either by trainers or bookies.
5. Trainers record does not works.
6. Distance and timings have little impact. Timings depend on various racing centers & track conditions, PEN reading, false rails etc. and also pace of the race and hence does not work.
7. It works only on that particular day's luck and also your karma with least expectation.

Today's (4-9-2017) Race No.2 in Hyderabad STRENGTHANDBEAUTY - odds 5/10 - failed to win. Whether you could spot the winner WESTERN EXPRESS - Horse No.7 applying these rules. But I could say STRENGTHANDBEAUTY cannot win by applying rule that any demoted horse cannot win immediately on demotion. There may be exceptions. It may be out of 100 races one or two might have won.
This is only a justification for STRENGTHANDBEAUTY defeat. Nothing else.
