Some truths, some opinions and some conclusions...
Roman’s Dosage ‘points’ INDICATE aptitude, NOT the ability of a thoroughbred. They are pointers for the future performance of a runner if his/her training, feeding and other factors are correctly assessed by the trainer. Pedigree analysis does help in sharpening the ‘aptitude’ of a runner by a skilful trainer and there are instances when a sprinter pedigree has run and won or closely finished behind a miler or long distance winner. Six Speed , Haunting Memories are two of them, which were basically sprinters, but did finish very close in a mile and longer races...
However most of the youngsters have to start their career by winning sprints and then graduate to their optimum distance as assessed by the connections. Squanderer, Oasis Star,In The Spotlight etc. all won 1000m/1200m races in their first start.
Now let us get on to the pedigree. I give more importance to dam line than to sire line because genetic studies including those on mitochondria confirm, that though the chromosomes provided by sire and dam are equal, the ‘ability’ to run ‘faster’ or ‘last longer’ is provided by the dam and not by the sire. The breeding industry will never highlight this point because their - ‘bread and butter’, earnings from the sire will be greatly affected.
The theme is the contribution of a mare. Since 2006 on this forum and other websites as well as on my blog, I’ve written many times the analysis of some of important races, I’ll not be able to do it every time due to various reasons but would advice some paid experts to do it sincerely..
