Karnataka Government Cannot Buy Its Way Into Bangalore Turf Club

By Gopal Rao | 14-Nov-2017

BTC has decided to take the bull by the horns – it won’t give away 50 paid memberships to the government in exchange for a racing licence. Some say it is a matter of principle, others are not so impressed

The Rs 2.5-crore carrot that the government dangled in front of the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) to get 50 memberships of the club has failed. Not only has the 350-member club refused the offer, it has also decided to take the licence battle to court.

More than 25 per cent proxies registered against the resolution to give 50 memberships to government nominees, two days before the Extraordinary General Body Meeting (EGM) scheduled on Wednesday.

In fact, 25 per cent vote is all that is needed to defeat the resolution and with more than 85 proxies registered — and a sizeable number deciding to vote against on Wednesday — it is clear that the club members are ready to take the bull by its horns.

The members are aware that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is adamant on the 50 memberships will not appreciate the big snub, but they reckon that they just cannot allow an entry from the back door.

“It is just not done. A number of present and past ministers, including KJ George, Ambareesh, Anil Lad, K Govindraj, Allum Veerabhadrappa, and eminent personalities such as justice Santosh Hegde and M Sankaranarayan, among others, have gone through the electoral process and become members. So what is stopping the 50 government nominees from contesting elections seeking memberships? They simply want to crash in and that is not allowed,” said Nandini Basappa, former international basketball star and a former horse owner at the club.

A couple of senior members of the club, not in favour of the resolution disclosed that the real fear is that if the club allows and decides to give in to the government’s demand, it will only open doors for the next government to place a similar demand and the end result will be that a race club will end up as a political club.

When posed with the question that a confrontation with the government could spell disaster, as the government is ready with the CID report on doping, betting mafia and tax evasion issues, the members agreed that it was tricky situation, while pointing out that they have a good case in hand to approach the courts.

Another senior and influential member, on condition of anonymity, revealed that the government is ready with an exclusive Legislators’ club two furlongs from the race club, why then does the government need to push 50 to the BTC.

The many who were in favour of the resolution were not impressed with the views of others, pointed out that in the interest of the sport, the need of the hour was to give in to the government’s demand and gain the licence to start racing at this premier racing centre.

“With no licence to conduct off-course betting and with the winter season in a limbo, the club is on the verge of bankruptcy. The horse owners and the more than 1000 daily wage employees are hit hard. The big investors in the game who loved racing horses at this premier centre are already working out plans to shift out to neighbouring states and that will dent the image of the club. The breeding industry too is suffering; buyers are not ready to purchase, knowing that BTC is under a cloud.

“Fifty memberships to the government is no big deal, considering the fact that without a licence for more than 75 days, the club is bleeding financially. Any further delay could well result in a closed shop, with horses and owners moving out of this centre,” said Zeyn Mirza, managing director of URBB and the Vijay Mallya-owned Kunigal Stud farm.

All said and done, it may take a while before the thunder of hooves will be heard at the race club now that the promised showdown on Wednesday has already been defeated without a vote being cast.

When a person not in a situation to learn some basics from the our seniors feel sad to me. Why because myself is the best example. I personally gave an adviced the scenario of racing.Even today also my advice to every punter is feel the excitement and get entertainment with a limit in betting range which never spoil your family atmosphere.

Dear SVK,
I for certain know that more than 95 percent Race goers actually need guidance and I am trying to make them aware of this fact thinking that even if 10 percent of this number start systematic study of the subject and are capable of understanding and practicing as required by the intricacies of the sport they will be benefitted in the furtherance of this sport of extreme skill.

@ Dear PDS

First time interacting with you in our HT. Please note that in this field no one care about seniority but take the credential of seniors. Forgive them and keep progress what actually we used to do. May have cross the generations but final result, which is concerned to the present generation. Experiance of some one is not considered here. The instant result is most important for present generation.

I too gave suggestions with my experiance, but who is going to take it.So as per my knowledge giving a proper advice also is wrong.

Let god may give better experiance to understand the facts. Let us keep calm and KARMA will give a lesson to our fellow generations.

Thank you all

@MadMax,
I was informed about it from a friend of mine and there was a query regarding it and so I answered, just knowing some BTC members doesn't mean someone is a hero.....
I have seen many times in various threads about your reckless behaviour, try respecting others if you can or just don't respond to such people if you can't use proper words.

Indiarace have published the news of defeat of resolution on their Home Page in the evening itself. The other website also published this news in time on their website. I have also got the news from Indiarace only. Then why Horse Talkers ignoring INDIARACE NEWS, and taking credit themselves by saying..... "AS PER "MY SOURCES" THEY DIDN'T AGREE WITH GOVT AND GOING TO COURT". Give credit to Indiarace.com for giving us the news first.

Dear Raj,
I am very senior in age and strongly feel that a large number of Race goers need some advise and guidance and I am a number of times contacted for that in our Racing centre. In case you need not any suggestions, pl don't bother to read it.
In any case I have never said it is not for making money, I only said it is an intricate challenge and a great sport of skills. Some people can not under stand
it as it is beyond them, they can refrain from it and that will be good for them.

@syed sadath,
As per my sources they didn't agree with govt and are going to court....they might include couple of races for Bangalore based horses in the coming Mysore season as interim adjustment.

Your comment that " large number of Horse lovers who consider it as a great sport of skills and love the challenge of the intricacies of Horse Racing * is laughable. 100% of punters goes to racing only for ONE thing. That is *Money*.
It's a different issue with rich owners who have nothing left to earn.
It's easy to write what u have written. And to top it, u act as if you are a winner in horse racing. Pl give us a break and live in reality not in pesudo world.

If you care to go back, there was a column, Heavy betting, published on 04/11/17 and I have also brought out some points for consideration. Please read that when you get time. I feel those points can be helpful, hope to hear from you.

Dear Dexter,
I have been Racing for very long time and know for sure that you can make money in Indian Horse Racing only if you play very wisely and other wise there is no chance or very little chance. I would suggest you should also try doing that. Good luck.

there is no such thing like being wise in bangalore racing as all the races are fixed prior to race day so there is no point arguing about bangalore races.

By inducing 50 persons as members to the club it will end up as political club!!!

OK Now what is happening same politics ruling the club. Politics is every where in the world, we have to live with that. (The meaning of POLITIC - Tactful, Diplomatic etc..)

What Churchill said that, you promise the people to grab the power but once you attain power explain the people why you cojld not fulfill the promise.

@ Himanshu You are very right.

It is disgusting to read comments by some 'enlightened' punters who think that closure of BTC will help save families from ruin.It boils my blood even more when they speak for other punters as if they are their mouth piece.I would suggest that they keep their 'learned advice' to themselves and save others the agony of going through their rubbish time and again.People visit races for various reasons and not all are greedy losers. Not all of them have ruined their families by visiting races.I know a person who has looked after his family purely on his race winnings since the past 5 years and 2 of his sons are engineering students.I also know a few senior citizens who invariably make 300-500 rupees a day, just enough for the day's expenses and are a contended lot.If someone does not like racing, no one is forcing them to gamble. They have the freedom to refrain from indulging in this 'sin' and lead a respectable life.Leave the die hard lovers of this sport alone PLEAASE.

Dear frds don't worry about BTC,no matter whose government is leading the show. Racing was happening from past several years and it will b there until punters, bookies will exits. It's just a game or eyewash that's all. Don't worry very soon it will be started. So keep studying the race book and warm or pocket until this dirty issue resolved.

Outrageous decision. Govt will take over the land now. May be not so much Outrageous to race goers as they will save in lakhs yearly and next 5 years . All of them will be happy people with plenty of cash in their hands. God is finally coming to rescue of punters.
Only prey that govt take over the land. Just keep mafia out and develop a great park of international std.

Well if you look deep inside in my opinion , this is a game played for the audience, question , why does the Govt need to impose 50 members and who might they be, are they interested in racing ? if it is freebies they want , they get them anywhere anyways why from BTC.
Now the question to members , you know where you stand, why are you trying to take the club down ? Is it not for the real estate that is a prime intent.
You will see that ina short time this club will close and the Govt sell the Land. Some members and the Govt are playing the same game.

@Raja...you nailed it...this is the story of all the race cubs across the country...these guys are worse than politicians...atleast politicians can be voted out every 5 years but these leeches don't leave even after they die...clubs can do far better if managed by the government. we keep complaining and comparing our race clubs to foreign ones but are scared to take the plunge when an opportunity is presented as a blessing in disguise to turn things around ...high time the government takes over and throws these leeches away in the ocean for good. To all those who are supportive of the club members my only question to you is what worse can happen if the government takes over...as it is the club is on the verge of bankruptcy and closure...if the club wins the battle we are back to square one...the same old crooks will govern again...will they change themselves or the club? Don't think so..

Dexter,
Your remark is very curt and to me it indicates that either you don't know Horse Racing or you have unwisely lost badly in Horse Racing. What ever are your reasons for dislike, there are a large number of Horse lovers who consider it as a great sport of skills and love the challenge of the intricacies of Horse Racing. Any way your views will also have your own reasons for it and should be respected. I will only bring out the fact that no one is forcing no one to gamble or indulge in Horse Racing and that also beyond the afford able limits. The self control must be maintained by every one at every stage.

Bangalore Turf Club or Baffoons Termite Club. Years back a club was formed. A few members realised the potential of horse racing and formed a club.

To remain all powerful forever they passed a resolution that fresh members will be recruited only by their vote. Hence they retained their control over the club forever by voting only for their kith and kin after they attained the age of 21.

Manipulation and fraud has reigned supreme since inception. 2000 crores in recent years was their turnover declared with these SELECT few playing havoc with the racing system. Siphoning the tote for millions and enjoying the facilities of a club in the heart of the city.

After these select few parasite families being habituated to looting this club now comes in the govt. asking for 50 memberships to join the loot. There is no way in hell that these families will let a new entity enter as then looting will become difficult.

Hence the inference is simple. The members care too hoots about horses and workers. Its all about control over the HOT SEAT. And there will be no racing under these circumstances as the purpose of the members of BTC will be lost if new entrants are allowed in.

If BTC wants to go to Court 75 days wasted. WHY?

The way things are in our courts it will be years before this issue can be resolved.

BTC is not the owner of this land only a tenant. I fail to see any reason for them to do so. Their grounds very flimsy

So racing is doomed in BNG UNLESS[A big if] new members are allowed.

RWITC has approx. 4300 to 4500 members out of which 1800 to 1900 are active in voting every year.

Here a mere 350 are dictating terms. God help BTC

With expired lease, you are occupying the land illegally. Government can overtake the land and hand over it to developers. BTC can not stand in court with this logic.
Members must use brains sometimes.

Instead of finding an amicable settlement, why do they want it to be complicated. It may take years for the courts to decide. Who is the loser or gainer, if 50 additional members are allowed. Hope some saner advice comes from with in and a settlement is arrived at , at the earliest.

Does BTC land belong to them or the government. Status Quo after BTC who gave the land to government went to court. Don't compare BTC with other top clubs int he city how membership is given. You want the CID report to come out with negative findings. Madamme Nandini Basappa for example and many others are members of other clubs. Only liquor licnese is given to other clubs not permission to run the club. BTC is dependent on government so why should the government not have they say.
