Ring Inside A Ring

At Madras racecourse first enclosures I fail to understand why are they allowing a set of bookmakers with writing pads accepting small denomination bets with full tax. They are most definitely disturbing by coming in the way of bigger denomination punters. As it is they have a second enclosure for small punters with half tax. Why are they encouraged here to cause inconvenience.

@ Venu,

Bigger denomination punters?

Your wealth has no meaning inside the race course. You may be living in 24OO ft house built on 48OO ft ground at Kodambakkam. May be having income to the tune of several lakhs per month by way of interest only on your FD account. May drive mercedez benz.

But enter the race course by paying the prescribed charge. And lo! you are equal to a rickshaw driver who earns 8OOO per month.

For small denomination punters who pay full tax, there are dedicated bookmakers. They have as much right to run the business as any other bookmaker who may insist on 5OOO bets minimum.

I am not talking socialism here. I am talking ground reality. People who are not as rich as you are may also like to be in 1st enclosure and bet small amount. You can not deny them admission.

And, you are speaking about half tax as if that is your prerogative. While I sympathise with tote players who pay 35% tax, I still feel that it is the rich who pay half tax for their bets responsible for deterioration of sport.

It was not milk and honey for punters during 9Os. But reasonably good racing. Even in early part of the 2OOO-2O1O the racing was good. Today, the standards have gone down. And I hold 'half tax' responsible for that.

Mr Venu pl be realistic.how many bokkies in India show actual betting rec'd to Authorities?all big herrings they take half tax only.so let small punters also enjoy it!! In Chennai if ubet ?100/ u have to give ?20/ more as tax.in big betting if u pay ?5k u have to pay ?500/ only as tax.nothing difference.also bookies only operating in front of their stall to accept small bets to ease rush at counter for big bettings.its only operational arrangements by bookies.but ofcourse in other center's this type of system not there.may be Chennai bookies r brilliant or more cheaters then other center's bookies.Only in tote everything goes correct.so let punters play only at tote instead of bookies.atleast some money we play intite goes to Govt inturn it helps govt for developments.

Hi Mr Venu,

This is one question that many 'honest' racegoers (is there anything called 'honesty' among punters?) keep asking in Chennai for a very long time. When I was living there during early 90s, I asked one of the senior stewards, Mr Antony about it and he said he was also in favour of abolishing the half-tax system. But nothing happened. In fact, I am given to understand (I have not been to MRC for at least five years now) that the numbers have swelled.

Here, I would recall the name of one of the prominent contributors to HT, Mr Raghavan, who has been opposing this kind of an ilegal practice vehemently since very long, but again to no avail.

We know nothing much happens in a place like race-course and the safest option before you, therefore, is to learn to live among such anti-socials (May I call them so?)
