Excellent Art

By Hunter | 10-Nov-2018

Major Nargolkar's article confirms that Excellent Art is the Champion Sure for 2017-18. Congratulations to the Ponnawalas.

The Major also reveals that EA has only 5 foals in his 3rd crop (after 83 in the 1st crop and 66 in the 2nd crop). Will someone throw light on this very surprising news? Has demand for him dropped or the mares did not carry?

@ Hunter

Miss Danehill had a colt by Arazan in 2016 and a filly by the same stallion in 2017. She was covered by Excellent Art in 2017.

So, I guess only the Poonawalas would know the answer to my question.

But just out of curiosity, do Ruffina and Corfe Castle have a full-bodied or full-sister?

@ Hunter

I do not have the answer, ether. I can only provide some facts.

It is the sole prerogative of a breeder on how many mares to allot each of his stallions. Sometimes, therre are veterinay reasons for curtailing the numbers. (I do not know if such was the case of Excellent Art.) Also, many breeders are cautious when alloting mares to the third crop of a new stallion. The reason behind this is when the stallion starts covering his third book, his first crop has still to start racing and there is no indication of how it is going to fare. A large third crop is a liability if the stallion fails to click while it is also true that it precludes the possibility of cashing in if he is a success.

The first three crop numbers of recent contemporaries of Excellent Art are as follows:-

ACE (112, 118, 61)

ARAZAN (126, 137, 40)

EXCELLENT ART (120,  100, 9)

LEITIR MOR (44, 77, 9)

I still don't have answer to my question. Why? Why so few mares were given to a successful sire like Excellent Art? Arazan is doing well in his own right but he is not as successful as EA. So, what's wrong with EA?

 in @ Varun

The new stallion LEITIR MOR covered only 28 mares in 2015. The stallion who was most patronised by the Poonawalla Farms in 2015 was Arazan who covered 95.

Must have another good reason for Excellent Art! Leitir Mor albeit out of Holy Roman Emperor, and out of grand sire Danehill was a flop at best. Merely 2 wins out of 26 starts is not stallion material!

@hunter,

Excellent Art only has 5 foals because another Stallion Leitir Mor is covering all mares and his yearlings will race in upcoming mumbai season.
