In an academic situation, single selections would make sense. In real world, hedging is always advisable when one is making an investment which involves element of risk - be it investing/trading in stock market or betting on horse races. One would hedge one's bet in a normal situation - these are after all animals being maintained at high level of fitness. When it comes to Indian racing, there are rogue elements at all levels - owners, trainers, jockies and outside operators. One is never sure if the horse one is backing is being tried or not. So, I have always employed strategy of betting on two horses to win in the same race and this strategy has generally paid off for me. Multiple selections are not a sign of weakness but a prudent management of one's money.

Here are my comments on the races tomorrow..

Race no. 6

Ruffina's favourite distance is 1,200M. She runs tomorrow over 1,400M, the distance over which she lost in Pune. A strong set in Captain Courage, New England and the improving Perfect Star will face her. Of this trio, New England may run Ruffina close. However, the champion filly is in great heart with her stirring acceleration a sight to delight. I'm going with Ruffina. Hope one gets decent odds.

Race no. 7

Riquewihr, Iron Age and Rising Brave are the prime contenders in this scurry over 1,000M. Iron Age seems to have the measure of Rising Brave based on their run together. That leaves Iron Age and Riquewihr - interestingly the pair have a common owner in Mistrys. Riquewihr's last victory over 1,000M on tight reins with whipless jockey aboard was impressive and she is my nomination to pick up this race also. Zeeshan's Allowance of 2.5 kg and his whip will certainly help.

Elsewhere, two one-time classic hopefuls - Bushtops and Anetevka - will be running in class 3 and class 4, respectively, and their runs need to be watched carefully.
