Trainer Uttam Singh

By Venkat | 18-Jan-2019

The Fillies & Mares Specilist. I am delighted that RWITC is honouring him on his 100thy birthday. Not many on thi9s forum would know anything about him. A simple man and may he always.

A jockey-- Yusuf Khan is used to be engaged by Uttam Singh especially on stubborn horses-- The Jockey used to tap the horses head with his whale bone in the paddock. I took it as a sign that he is telling the horse to behave. Thereafter I used to watch what Yusuf was doing with his mount on the way to the barrier. Those days we did not have TVs, no digital cameras et all. Only Binoculars! If he kept tapping the horse on its head, I would wager on the horse!! Most times, the horse would jump out smartly and then win!!

A small anectode in the memory of both--Trainer Uttam Singh & Jockey Yusuf Khan.

Cheers

Venkat

@ Ruchi

It is easy to master Mr. Bhutaney's book before it is published but difficult to remember correct facts.

The famous Jackpot of Mr. Rajindar Krishan was on  Indian 1000 Guineas day in 1969. Yusuf Khan rode TWO of the winners; not THREE. That season, Yusuf Khan was retained by Dady Adenwalla; NOT Hayat Mohd.

Ferrari did win Byculla Club Cup thrice but Mitke rode him only twice. Oliver Gray rode him in his third win.

Trainer Uttam Singh was renowned for wining on mares or fillies and it is apt to name Oaks in his memory.

Remember him because of the filly Venus De Milo which won the invitation @ Bangalore @ 25/1 ridden by Bren Duffy. It was banker in my JP and lost it in the last leg which was won by Ajantha at 15/1. JP was carried over amounting to 40 lacs. There were no consolation in those days. I solved the treble amounting to 2 lacs & odds. Venus had won the 1000 guineas at Mumbai and had some set back. Never ran in any other classics in Mumbai. Uttamji nursed the horse and brought it to Bangalore. It had a prep race and won the Invitation.

Now that topic if the LADIES ( FILLIES) NAN is the topic,it's a milestone for me as the day his filly VENUS DE MILO won the invitation way back in 1969 was the day I entered the race course as a kid at Bangalore.First time in life I saw live racing.VENUS DE MILO was card number 16 and was ridden by Bren duffy.i backed one 5 rupees ticket on it as it was top in mu handicap system. It paid RS 69 for a fiver.Uttam Singh was also famous for winning the BYCULLA CUP on FERRARI .not ionceo but three years in sucession  with tider MITKE.Those we're the days

Hello Venkat,

Well said. I do remember Uttam Singh and Yusuf Khan. I personally knew Yusuf Khan who is to come to Bangalore for ride. Originally he was housed in Hyderabad. Infact Yusuf Khan used to stay in a hotel called Nanda Hotel in Gandhinagar 5th Cross.  My house was adjacent to this hotel. Yusuf Khan was a down to earth person and he used to mingle with us to play cricket during his free time!!

Good Day!

I remember Yousf Khan winning on Capriati at 10 to 1 odds in a three horse field against Alix which was quoted at 25nP ridden by Antia. Antia took a long lead on Alix and emptied the fuel fully.  My friend backed big amount at bargaining price of 15nP on Alix and lost. He still remembers Antia for the wrong reasons.
