Accordingly, Shroff had Roberta examined by the club’s vet on Wednesday morning. The vet certified Roberta as medically unfit and she was excluded from the list of 15 Derby runners.
Shortly after receiving the news about Roberta’s forced withdrawal from the fray, co-owner Vijay Shirke shot off a letter to the club requesting the stewards of the club to reconsider the decision. Shirke wrote, “As owners, it is our sincere request that another independent vet should examine her (Roberta) and take a final decision.
According to Mr Shroff, she is much better at present than what she was before the Indian Oaks and, therefore, according to him she’s fit and capable of running the Indian Derby.”
Adding further, Shirke opined, “This issue is too subjective to be handled by a lone club official. The existing rules must be changed and there should be a wider participation of professionals when deciding such delicate matters.”
Giving her views on this incident, Roberta’s breeder Ameeta Mehra said, “In Roberta’s case, there is a doubt and controversy about the nature of her problem and if it indeed would hamper her racing ability. I would suggest that RWITC call Dr Hasneyn Mirza to examine her as he has been treating her since last 6 months and seek his opinion. The Indian Derby comes once in a life-time in a horse’s career. In my humble opinion, every effort should be made by the stewards of the club to ensure that the decision taken by the club’s vet is indeed the right one. And since the vet in question is junior to Dr Mirza, it would be in the fitness of things to get another opinion from the latter especially as the former’s opinion is being challenged by Roberta’s owners and trainer.”
