A very interesting observation. I am now convinced Trainer Paddy will not take a risk on Sir C if he is not fit for the fray. Aravind Sir C has a huge advantage-- Jockey David Allan! He will handle all the pace setters who could try to break or unsettle Sir C.

I too remember Royal Tern in the Bangalore Derby in 1978. The Great Ramu ( Gold & Brown Brigade) had 4 mounts with Will Smith riding Own Opinion and they tried hard but Jockey Karl Umrigar was upto it and I recall the famous Tern won at 2 1/4.

Sir Cecil will not win this race. Till now he is unbeaten but apart from star Superior, (non stayer) he has beaten all average horses.

Further he will be forced to make front running in long mahalaxmi straight and that's exactly what hampers it's chances at the wire. He will surely fight hard but will eventually surrender in last 30-50m.

I believe the chances of Bushtops (PSC) and Sacred Roman (YSS) have been ruined by the jockey choices..

And think why L Roche has chosen to ride Bluebell. Should place.

Pesi is holding the two Jokers here.  Both will stay,  Vintage needs to be ridden of the pace initially.  This race may have come a bit to early for him.  

SR on the other hand needs smooth ride.

I had fancied Bushtops for place and with the luck of the race for win  but with PSC up I am not going to fancy Bushtops.It is not Chennai Derby were he got the win which looked more like it was predetermined.Count the number of races(classics/Gradred) he has lost in close finish. The few are a) Mytrlewood lost to Desert God in Indian Derby by 1/2 length.Any other jockey would have won hands down

b) Kangra's first loss in classic to Windsor Forest by short head. Kangra reeled of victories in all classics including Invitation after that loss with Sandesh/Trevor

c) Brilliant Cut short head loss to Angel Dust

In cricket paralance it is nervous 90s and this jockey has it in classics.

My choice is Sir Cecil and Adjudicate will fight every inch.Many feel that Adjudicate won against poor lot but her style of running impresses me a lot and with question mark over SC fitness and SCs win was against Star Superior a suspect stayer can also considered average.SCs win in Mysore Derby is exaggerated because of the poor field.Even Castlebridge won the Mysore Derby the same way in record time. Adjudicate jockey selection with Sandesh is spot on. I would have preferred if they had thought about Sandesh they should have had a track with him on Adjudicate. SC has also the Indian Derby jinx of favourites not winning especially the ones going undefeated in several races including classics. I will go with Adjudicate each way. The group which has maximum runners in the Derby field always goes for place with unexpected horse with good place bet and for that I like Vintage whose sibling Rochester won the Indian Derby.

I hope all the connections try each and every runner in this Derby field with no partiality or predetermined notion.I wish every runner all the best and may the best win.

Tips to look for a Derby prospect -Progress is what matters -Indian Derby 2019

Have been punting for over a decade now and as everyone else, have always been facinated with the  Indian Derby ...it's become a habit now for me to predict the so called upsets or long shots (not just the winner but then 1,2 and 3) basically value for money bets ...:) In my terms low investment and high or above average returns ....of coursre racing is a game of uncertainty with lots of pros and cons, if's and but's....but then i firmly believe that if a horse has to win or place in a prestigious race there has to be a logic ....mainly fitness ,improvement ,Lluck, jockey who is riding  , owners (connections) , breeders  and  so on ....over the years I have narrowed  down to three key pointers ...might be strange but then it has worked for me many a time - 

A) turn of foot ( as a 2/3 year old) 

B) seasoning of the horse - center's where it was summered 

C) current form or the improvement noticed over last couple of runs ...

Basis these logic's i have arrived at one value bet for this year's Derby ....how and why will explain in the next post ...as a punter,  aim is to make money even if it's just a place bet ...

Here are my two cents on why an excellent horse might come a cropper and why an average staying horse might find itself on the busy end of field.

While the performing horses are always expected to run a good race like Sir Cecil, Star Superior, Adjudicate and will be in the money from betting perspective. But factors like horses for courses(Adjudicate) and Doubtful stayers( Star Superior) makes Horses like SC stand taller than the rest of the field. There is also another factor called luck of the race and that might be favouring some unfancied horse to sneak in due to a traffic situation or a different going on the race day. But one thing is sure that my money will be riding on a Long shot which is a  staying pedigree horse who has shown good performance on Mumbai track.

Part II. Had some internet disconnection.

Both Sacred Roman and Bluebell are front runners. Bluebell was sacrificed for Roberto by indifferent running. Vintage is a full brother to ID winner Rochester. So I feel both Sacred Roman and Bluebell may do the Red Chieftain's job and if they could hold on it is a bonus.

Nice write up. Two horses are running after set back Sir Cecil and Pioneer and further Pioneer is running after Phone Derby. We don't know how much they are ready 80%,90% or ?. Pioneer is running to show off the owners colours and so to Mr.Handsome. Why Mr.Handsome is running? Is it to add more trouble/ spokes into the group's star superior's  chances.

Pioneer will be ridden by PSC, the favourite Rider of the owner.

Trevor will ride Vintage and Sandesh will ride BUSHTOPS. Adjudicate will be ridden by ? May be S.A.Dezousa .

If Sir Cecil is to be beaten they will have to plan like Own Opinion's invitation win against Royal Tern. Sir Cecil reminds Royal Tern which used to stemroll even the best sprinters. But somebody should do a Red Chieftain's job of pace making with Sir Cecil. 

Bushtops is the strong contender for the group which has Bluebell, Sacred Roman,Vintage

Those who know "RAMJET"............ know to bet on which horse!

A good analysis but many questions unanswered.

!. Fitness of Sir Cecil. Absolutely no news. One spurt in Mumbai (undoubtedly excellent tracks over a mile- but remember no wall of horses running alongside). Secondly, Sir C has not traversed a milke and a half ever before.He is a fast horse; so will he stay. I think he will but his draw number will also be a factor not to mention the luck of the race. Will Jockey David Allan ride him or will he partner Adjudicate? David has partnered Adjudicate to a sweep of Kolkatta classics and in the Kol Derby, he looked over his shoulders atleast 4 times before easing her!!! 

2. Adjudicate-- spurts in Mumbai-- very poor! Has she lost steam? Though Adjudicate hammered mediocre horses in the Kolkatta Derby, she won splendidly and though she looked to be on a canter most of the way, she clocked a fairly good time. Her advantage is that she has emphatically demonstrated that she can stay having gone over the distance smoothly. One bad track doe4s not indicate to me that she will not like the Mumbai weather or the track. If Sir C is not fit, she will win.

3. Star Superior. Star S blood lines does not inspire confidence. His Sire is Excellent Art- not much on stamina; his dam is Ramjet- again not much on stamina.My take is that while he is also a superstar he wont win. May not even place. Undoutedly, Jockey Suraj Narredu will partner him,, but,,,

4. The joker in the pack is Sacred Roman.He is I am told bred to stay. A good bet on this race would be to wager place on him. However, I would recommend that he be ridden in check. He should not try a pillar to post win!

4. Then we have the Shirke's Bushtops and Bluebell. In the my humble view, Bluebell is better. In his last run, oddly he was slowly away; losing about 4 lengths at the start.Thus Roberta won much easier.I( think depending on the Jockey-- if it is Roche, he will run a big race.

Have the jockeys been declared? I could not get this info anywhere.

Let the best thoroughbred win
