Back to listsRe: Toppers Of The Four Derbies Contest
By Major Srinivas Nargolkar (retd.) | 07-Feb-2019Mr. S.K. Sagar's ingenuous contest has come to a close. With parameters being specified and the placings on the board as well as the dividends being unalterable facts, the final results have been known since the time Sir Cecil hobbled into the third place at Mahalakshmi. However, it is my pleasant task of confirming them.
The TOP FIVE finishers,, as already mentioned in Mr. Sagar's post of 06-02-2019 7.08 P.M., are:
RAKESH MENON - 8,01,400 points
CEE KAY - 3,54,900 points
GAYATHRI - 3,15200 points
ABHAY...PUNE - 2,95,140 points
THE DOC - 2,49,700 points
It was Abhay...Pune who led at the end of the first round having picked the first three in the Calcutta Derby in the right order. Rakesh menon, however, was on his heels. Four of the top five correctly identified the winner of the Bangalore Derby and though Abhay...Pune still led, Cee Kay, Rakesh menon and Gayathri were bunched up just behind. The Hyderabad leg virtually decided the contest as Rakesh Menon correctly predicted the first three finishers, though not in the correct order. A return of 5,47,600 points for that saw Rakesh menon break away from the field. The final leg was the least lucrative of the four and did not affect the standings.
Congratulations to the Toppers and especially to all other contestants. If there is no field, there is no race.
Rakesh menon had only one winner but his picks of Barbaresco, New Moon and Bradfield College showed his eye of the outsiders. Of the top five, he was also the only one to have Star Superior in this three for the Indian Derby.
CEE KAY correctly identified the first three winners while Gayathri had two. Some years ago, Mr. Sagar had asked me to announce the results and if I remember rightly Gayathri had done well that year also. I am especially amused by Gayathri's reference (03-02-2019 8.15 P.M.) to the Indian Derby favourite as 'Sir Devil'. I do not know if that was intentional or accidental but he certainly proved to be one as the majority chose to ignore the warning bells regarding his fitness.
Abhay...Pune had two winners while The Doc had three. I think -- I am open to correction -- there were three instances of a contestant getting all his three slections right. I have already mentioned Abhay...Pune and Rakesh menon. The third instance that I recall was of Ganesh in the first leg.
There were about 60 contestants and among them were 'rathis' and 'maharathis' of the daily selections threads. That being so, it was a bit disheartening to find that only Rakesh menon and CEE KAY showed a positive return on the investment of 3,24,000 points. Just goes to show hard it is to be a punter.
Finally my sincere thanks to Mr. S.K. Sagar for inviting me to do the honours. Mr. Sagar is the author of three serious, philosophical books. It amazes me how he can keep abreast with racing while being involved with more demanding projects. As long as there are people like him in racing, there is a "Bright Light In The Sky".
