It's all in the Stewards hands my friend!

You must have heard about the famous Chinese philospher Confucius. Once a group of mischievous children wanted to put Confucius to shame and therefore came with a bizarre question by holding a birdie in their palm of the hand. This is what they said : "Sir, can you say if the birdie is dead or alive?" The intention of the naughty children was that if Confucius replied 'dead' then they will open their hand and show that the bird is alive, and in case if the answer is 'alive', they will crush the bird to death and show that it's dead.

Similarly, in a race-course everything is in the hands of the stewards. They can either make or break rules and there is no one to question them. How many races I had seen during my race days that have been wrongly upheld and overruled by the stewards in almost all the centres? You can see it more if a steward is also the owner of the horse.

During earlier days, when the 'photo finish' can only be ascertained from the photo that they display after the race, you can clearly see a lot of manipulation. Who can question these stewards?

The standard of racing is always undermined by two quarters: first the bookies and then the stewards. But unfortunately withour these two quarters racing cannot go on too, isn't it?

In the straight the horse run almost 60Km. per hour.  If you are running a two whleer with friend in the back and all of sudden some person cross the road or you run on a pot hole it is accident but if are talking to your friend without looking at the road it is carelessness.

In both the cases it is difficult to control (horse or Two wheeler)

I really dont understand what exactly you wish to say. The panel of the judges decides whether the perticular horse deserved to win or not. As regards careless riding or other fault, jockeys are always penalised for their act.

In accidental incidents,  the jockey has no control over the event. If a horse in front came down on his legs,  the jockey riding behind him can not avoid the fall of his horse.                                       In careless riding,  the jockey has full control over his horse,  but for reasons best known to him,  he does not wish to control it. He may deliberately interfere with another horse,  or he may deliberately allow his horse to drift out.       A jockey s first duty is to save the limbs of other jockies and horses ,in that order..Winning comes only later. Careless riding on part of a jockey may cripple other jockies for life or may result in horses being put to sleep.

When the horse shifts of its own accord without the urgings of the jockey then it is deemed accidental, although the jockey is expected to correct it (this can be tricky to determine and is a grey area), and whilst if it shifts complicit of the jockeys handling (for e.g whip in the wrong hands) then careless. The ruling by RWITC is right on both occasions in R5 and R6 yesterday.

However I would question the riding skills of the jockey in question in R5, Jetfire was travelling a double handful turning for home and level at the 300m marker yet the jockey decides to use the whip only past the furlong pole with 160m left to run, too late to raise a fluent gallop.

In R116 Jetfire finished 3L behind Sullivan in a 7f contest in what was a fast run race. In R5 finished 5L behind Intense Stylist and was also a runner in the 2000G although finished last.

if the horse was allowed to run on its merit then Jetfire should have won by a comfortable margin!
