How Inferior Is Indian Racing Compare To Overseas?

By Geebee | 03-Mar-2019

Desert God is a prime example about how much behind the quality of Indian racing is compared to overseas. This horse (which is an Indian derby winner) was not even placing on board in class 3 and 4 races in UK. I have followed this horse religiously when he was here in UK as an Indian pride but everytime got dissapointed. Now after being back in India, it is not only running Group races but 2nd favorite in a race like Invitation cup (India's Breeders Cup)?

It begs the question, how much behind are we as a racing and how can we get more competitive?

It's about two or three simple things.

When you compare Indian racing with Europe it's about stakes at claim,  government policy towards the sport and mentality of people governing the sport. In India you have very less stakes as compared to the cost of purchase. The government looks towards racing as sin. The proffesionals involved will never allow a stranger to work as a trainee and be a trainer. They have the mentality that let rich be rich and poor be poor. Indian racing is more about making the bookies, trainers and jockeys rich. They don't even care for owners. I have seen owners who I am close friend with that they were never told when there horse will win so they can bet. And always told to bet when the horse lost. So it's a manipulated theme. Today many of big time trainers much richer than most of the owners. We have trainers coming in mercs and owner in Honda city

A good topic taken up for discussion, particularly close on the heels of 'Adjudicate' winning the Invitation Cup.

Indian racing is far better than racing in countries like Sri Lanka, Mauritius and few other countries. Elsewhere, we are a spent force, a fact which has been time and again vindicated by the performance of our horses.

We can't completely blame the trainers or owners for this plight. Investing in tons in India doesn't augur well for the big-time owners and that's why they keep their deposits at the minimum possible.  Only in recent years our stakes money has gone up. You can see today even Chennai races offer more than Rs.four lakh rupees for a maidens race and a Class I race. Still not owners of other centres are keen to send their horses in big numbers to Chennai.

The moot point is that only big names continue to bag major events. Once in a blue moon we come across 'The Invader'. That's all!

'Quasar' was always a good animal but our punters do not want an overhyped 'Be Safe' to be beaten. A majority of racegoers in India wants the same horse to keep on winning. That's what happened in the case of 'Sir Cecil' until it lost. And when it was defeated, theories were afloat that the animal was not fully fit. Such bad rumours do not good to promote healthy racing.

They say out of the stakes money in offer, 70% goes to the owner, 20% to the trainer and 10% to the rider. Do all jockeys and trainers get that? I don't think so.

Hi we have great sires in India like burden of proof,  multidimensional ,china visit , placerville, recently excellent art, leitir mor, speacking of which. But if you refer their progenies in overseas they are non performers. Our breeders brought them to India for breeding we are getting great results here same horses goes to race in overseas same result what their foriegn siblings are getting.

Our breeders also can bring the same breeding techinues and great sires for that they have to spend lot more investment and breeders should sell their yealings for more money which owners cant afford because of prize money.

Example Desert god earnings approximately 8 crores in span of 4 years that to he won almost all group races we have two richest races in India banglore summer derby approximate winner get 1 cr and indian derby approximate winner get 1.2 cr remaining they offer around 40-60 lakhs. If the horse is multiple classic winner only the owner gets prize monet in crores or else in lakhs or sometimes horses doent participate in terms races

So there lot more behind those paddock parade. In India races are conducting which suits to our condition and financial situation

Very simple.Indian racing is sheltered from world with no incentive to improve.

It's the same case in Olympics. Not even a single medal in athletic events. The horse genes and and human genes in this part of the world is not good enough for endurance.

Sorry friend

Indian races are all prefixed and not run on merit...take example of Quasar beating legend like Besafe and also Adjucate winning Invitation...
