Back to listsWill Punters Beat Bengaluru Bookies This Season?
By Smart-still-poor-punter | 17-Jun-2019The way things have taken shape since the start of Bengaluru season, it appears that for a change (if not for the first time in the history of Indian horse racing), punters may go on to have an upper hand over the bookies.
I am not making a big statement out of excitement or just having experienced the proverbial 'tip of the iceberg' but purely going by the manner in which racing is taking place. Merit, thankg God, seems to be having a free fun!
The just-concluded weekend, where about 90% of favourites seem to have emerged victorious, gives a fair indication that racing is going to be pro-punter, provided the railbirds learn how to make a fast buck or, as they say, 'strike the iron when it is hot'.
Bookies must be fuming in defeat, something they hardly come across, sitting comfortably in their raised seats and keep counting the denominations, mostly to pocket it home. Such has been the 'landslide' that the bookmakers are witnessing during this season that many of them must already be wondering how things will go if the same trend prevails for a couple of more weeks?
Like several punters, many bookies also live on borrowed money. For them, it will be a nightmare if favourites (for that matter, even second favourites) keep winning for a few more weeks. With coffers getting empty, it will be very hard for them to fill in the same with fresh money and take on the challenge.
Punters vs Bookies clash is no more a Ind vs Pak tie where Pakistan used to demolish us under greats like Imran Khan and Javed Miandad. Today it seems Indians have learned the technique to remain in the forefront, like the 7-0 margin they keep in World Cup matches against our arch rivals.
Although I have no inclination to come back to race-course as a punter, I wish each and everyone of you a great success in the days to come. (My advice to keep away from Mysuru races still holds good?) Thank you
