By S C Sharma | 24-Jun-2019Time is the one absolute truth in the game of horse racing and betting. Handicappers and timing experts devote much time to calculate each and every horse minutely and eliminate more than eighty percent horses as non serious contenders and focus on only twenty percent horses best placed as per timing and handicapping . Time or timing of the performance of the horse based on speed and stamina. Speed and stamina is based on horse ‘s body weight and saddle weight including the jockeys and other equipment’s weights over a allocated distance. Speed matters most in short distance or sprint races and stamina matters most in middle distance and route or in long distance races. Speed and stamina can be judged by bloodline, previous runs and as per latest preparation on track.
Generally many punter knows many things and based upon their experiences plan well about game or bettings before entering the race course but as soon as they enters race course, they will be subjected to onslaught of emotions — overconfidence, lack of confidence, greed, conservatism, complacency, desperation, panic —. and will deviate or forget their game plan and betting plan and many times trapped in undesired practices. Proper discipline and control of emotions, self confidence and determination is necessary for success.
For selection of horses - study, analyse and do detailed handicapping with speed and stamina factors. Select less number of horses for betting and for more success rate. Selection of more number of horses yield less success rate.
In any business money management is the key and base for success and progress. Plan your budget for racing. Monthly budget, quarterly, half yearly or yearly budget of racing and play all your selected horses with fixed betting stake for best and positive results. Betting should be based on a system and your budget and betting stake should not effect your routine livelihood, family responsibilities and social obligations.
Last and important aspect after selection of a horse and money management ( budget ) select a perfect betting system and follow the same for best results. Popular and normally adopted betting systems are 1) Equal amount of betting on horses odds quoted not less than evens. 2) Double the stake betting, if first bet looses, doubling the betting amount in next bet and continue the same till your selected horse wins. 3) Betting across the board system, where if your selected horse offered more than evens in place than fifty percent of your betting stake on win and rest fifty percent on place for ensuring safety. 4) Hedge betting system in which you are eighty percent confident on your picked horse and twenty percent on another horse which may prove live danger, in that case eighty percent betting will be on first horse and twenty percent betting on second best horse provided both the horses are not favourite. 5) Exchange and lay betting system in which you can exchange your choice horse with another horse or if you don’t like favourite horse you can go for lay betting that is known as eating, instead of playing. Further bettings are also classified as prime bets means betting on routine selections, based on handicapping and speed and stamina where success rate is sixty percent and above and the other one is action bets means fluke horses, chance or fancy bets for which success rate is very low.
Bettings can be done by two ways 1) Betting in fixed odds with the bookmakers in the ring or on tote. 2) No fixed odds and only tote bettings including single, double, treble or kaichi of three or more horses on tote where dividends will be as declared after the race and after all clearance. If the selected bettings is for a favourite than dividends will be less with compare to fixed odds and if betting is for fluke horses than dividends will be some times more compare to fixed odds.
Finally to avoid rash, wild and desperate betting or chasing and unplanned betting, go with the three points 1) Selection of the horse as per merit 2) Budget for racing and stake for betting as per money management and 3) Any one system and option of betting to be followed for best results.
My above post is for information and for punters who wish to improve their planning and desirous of controlled and disciplined betting with a more sense of responsibility .
