Most Respectful, Successful And Greatest Ever - Trainer

By S C Sharma | 15-Jul-2019

Yes the above caption is referred to non other than the all time great, the one and only, the training icon and racing legend Rashid R Byramji, who followed the footsteps of his father and grandfather to become a trainer at the young age of 21 yrs and got licence by RWITC in May, 1955 to train the horses and tasted his first success on Z A Poonawalla’s ‘Ling Mala’ in January, 1956, LM further went  on to complete four wins in a row.

Entire racing fraternity applaud R R Byramji for his absolutely incredible achievements during his 62 years of long training career and respect him with unconditional love for the standards he set in racing and training.

I thought it appropriate to put this post on the occasion of coming Bangaluru summer derby for remembrance of his greatness and humility. R R Byramji’s tenure for about 10 years at RWITC recorded champion trainer at Mumbai for 9 consecutive years before shifting base to Bangaluru turf club in 1965. In March, 2017  at the age of 82 yrs he first decided not to renew his trainer’s license and finally announced his retirement in December, 2017. He proved his mettle beyond doubt as a guiding light to about 20 new horse trainers worked under and they all regards him as a trainer of trainers and guru who always give his blessings. He honed the technique and skills of riding to many top jockeys and blessed them perfection with riding tips too.

R R Byramji has a doctorate degree from university of Glasgow, England for conditioning of horses but he never used Dr. before his name and many of his well wishers know very little about this. He revered for his achievements, loved for humility and respected by all of you know or hear of him.

Two all time great horses run on Indian turf are trained by R R Byramji — 1) Elusive Pimpernel won 22 races out of 23 runs and lost only once to ‘Consequence ‘ in tight finish in Idar gold cup in 1995. 2) Squanderer won 18 races out of 19 runs and lost only once to ‘Red Satin’  in Bangaluru Colts  Trial Stakes in 1977.

R R Byramji’s winner’s tally is very impressive and tall. More than 3150 winners, including about 230 classic wins and 10 times Indian derby with hattrick in three consecutive years twice and record 12 time Invitation Cups including three hattricks. He once made clean sweep of classics at Chennai winning all five classic races with five different horses. He was crowned 42 times champion trainer title in his career. Apart from Elusive Pimpernel and Squanderer his best trained horses were- Commanche, Manitou,Astronomic, Bergamo, Caminetto, Littleover, Mohawk, Calligraphy, Track lightning, Almanec, Everynsky, Nelson, Delage, Bugs bunny and Adler.

R R Byramji associated with some of the best owners who gave him some of the finest horses to  train and some of them are listed as follows— Z A Poonawalla, S C Khatau, J P Goenka, Ranjeet V Bhatt, Yogesh M Shah, Deepak Khaitan and Vijay Mallaya.

Top Indian jockeys including Jagdish, Vasant Shinde, Aslam Khader and P Shroff and some top foreign jockeys including Lester Piggott rode his trained horses and they rated him super best among the bests.

A time when R R Byramji took his license as a trainer many of us not even born and when he started creating and breaking records after records many of us were only kids and not aware about horse racing. It is good to know the historians, the legends with all their records and facts.

R R Byramji built lasting relationships in racing fraternity that is prone to ever- changing affiliations. With all respect I salute the legendary trainer and hats off to his outstanding contributions in racing. He will remain an icon and guiding force to many old, new and upcoming trainers and jockeys.

I Wish him tons of good luck with duwaas and happy, peaceful and healthy life.

.A  coup was enacted on Attaturk   after it won twice in Bangalore summer season. Then Ramu baught that horse. It immediately became antipost favourite for the the Bangalore summer derby. Those days if a horse which was backed antipost doesn’t run in that race the punters bet is lost. When the  acceptencess came for the derby race, the name of Attaturk was not there. After this incidence the rules for antipost betting were changed

Attaturk 1977 foal.King's son out of California

During Bangalore, summer racing ( 1980 ) Attaturk won twice ridden by Barclay, trained by E. Cracknell

. Subsequently, it was bought by M.A.M and ran in his colors in the Derby and lost poorly to Track Lightning. Then it was taken to Hyderabad and lost the(2000 guineas /Colts trials) to Look of Eagles. After this loss, I have no idea about Attaturk. All from Memory. Corrections are welcome..

ATTATURK (ch c King's Son - California) was born at Lumbini Stud in 1977. He was owned by the Reddys of Lumbini Stud and trained by E.J. Cracknell. During the winter season at Bangalore in 1979-80, he ran thrice winning two races and placing second once. On his last start, he won Governor's Cup in style by six lengths. That race was considered a pointer to Classics in those days.

Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy was impressed by ATTATURK and bought him for substantial amount.Trainer Aris David took charge of the colt and ran him five times in summer and monsoon. He won three races including Hyderabad Colts' Trial Stakes but was beaten in Derby Bangalore (by Track Lightning) and Deccan Derby (by Look of Eagles). Both Track Lightning and Look of Eagles were trained by R.R. Byramji.

ATTATURK did not race during whole of 1980-81 having broken down and when he did come back, his name had been changed to Old Gold. Rest of his racing career was undistinguished.

Byramji does play indirect part in ATTATURK story but never actually had anything to do with him.

I remember a horse named Attaturk was trained by Rashid Byramji. It was in pink of condition and was winning all the races effortlessly. When everyone was predicting Attaturk to win Indian Derby suddenly ( I think it was MAM ) bought the horse.

Rashid Byramji is not a person to give up so easily. He trained his next best horse ( don't remember the name ) and beat Attaturk comfortably in the big race.

Such a character is Rashid Byramji.

Royal Tern and Own Opinion will fight a ding dong battle whenever they meet. No other horses can even think of beating these two giants. Red Cheiftan will be the pace maker.

Then came Everynsky which was trained none other than Rashid Byramji and beat the two giants.

@ Indian - Turf- Record : I am thankful to you for correcting my gathered information on RRB.   When RRB allotted trainer’s license, I was not even 1 yr old. But my passion forced me to read all available material on RRB with lot of enthusiasm. I regret for my over dependency on media reports and other publications and I took them in all fairness,  as total correct.

You too doing commendable and wonderful job by correcting the facts and placing  it before all. Pl continue your good work by correcting and updating on latest info on such important  matters which will be useful for one and all.  Once again, you deserve my sincere thanks.

@ S.C. Sharma

It is commendable of you to write about R.R. Byramji. Rashid Byramji has never written an autobiography. His biography has been written By Maj. Nargolkar which I have mentioned. If you have read it as you say, some errors should not have cropped up:-

    1.  He was born on 5 November 1934 and became 21 (minimum age for a trainer) on 5 November 1955. He was granted a license as a private trainer to Mr. S.A. (NOT Z.A.) Poonawalla from Pune season of 1956 (NOT 1955).

    2.  He led in his first winner Ling Mala on 18 November 1956 (NOT January 1956).

   3.  He shifted to Bangalore permanently from the winter season of 1979-80. (NOT 1965 or 1978 as mentioned by Srinivasan)

   4. Red Satin's Colts' Trial Stakes was run in 1976 (NOT 1977).

These are very minor errors (I have not mentioned some glaring spelling mistakes). But when we are paying tribute legends, it is necessary to avoid them. They became legends because they took care of minute details.

very humle and down to earth person.,thank u sharmaji for trigerring the memory lane and letting us know many realistic achievements of sir R R BYRAMJI. I first met him in 2002,and bought two horses from his stable ( IF LOOKS COULD KILL and ZARAN ) in bangalore.me and my friends had formed a syndicate registered as WISDEN RACING SYNDICATE. Sir invited me to his residence in cunningham road,he blessed us, advised us,and guidede us as we were new to horse racing as owners.his assistant trainer Bipin v salvi ,got trainer licence in mysore and trained our syndicate horses as per RRB's guidence. ZARAN won the race in mysore at longer odds which was the first win for both bipin as triner and for us as owner.IF LOOKS COULD KILL also won the race under J S Pillai's training.,though we were small owner's sir always spoke to us when ever we met , specially early in the morning in BTC during track hours.and one more thing i would like to add ,till his date of retirement,as per my knowledge he never missed the morning track supervising and he used to come early. We are blessed to see the living legend of racing in BTC on every racing day. That is his SPIRIT,LOVE,PASSION........towards racing.Sir i wish u good health and long live,u have been inspiration to many to stay in the racing industry.

@ Srinivasan : After reading autobiography and media publication reports on R R Byramji and with my own research I prepared this post in a nutshell for racing enthusiasts and horse lovers to know much more about such legends. Regarding info of joining  of RRB at BTC in the year 1965 I read a report published in Times of India with a specific mention of the year. Maximum information and statistics are compiled from various sources. Anyone having more such info he can share for benefit of others.

Ruchi,

Topmost was ridden by Nelson Reuben and Richileu by Earnie Alford.

Foy did win atop Prince Khartoum but that was in the Bangalore Summer Derby.

George McGrath, a top notch Irish jockey rode for RRB with great success. I watched in fascination when he won the Indian 2000G with the stable's doosra Sea Mist beating Rubaix and the favourite Commanche.

ITR,

That's right. Hurry was the sub culprit.

I agree with Ayyarnet. The government MUST recognize Mr. Byramji's professional accomplishments and give him an award. It is high time our government accords due recognition to the racing industry. After all, it creates jobs for thousands of professionals across the country, not to mention the heavy tax contribution!

May be this was written for the benefit of punters new to racing. Writing is about many big owners.one of rrb bangalore based owners was hajee abdul sattar sait.i forgot the name of the horse he owned which reeled off victories from class 3 to class 1 winning 1200 meters in each class and straight away was entered in the maharaja gold cup.with jagadish up won the cup @ 15/1 and over.

Regarding buck passer,i don’t remember whether it won the Bangalore derby or not, but, it gave a shocking win in the Maharaja Gold Cup beating the English filly mamma's mink at 30/1. Bp was ridden by remedious.
According to me Barclay was the best foreign jockey to ride in India. He some issues and was riding in india. He ended up his career riding for the late mam.

Mam was the first to spot the talent of vasant shinde and gave him his first classic ride on half a crown. Shinde got his first car from him, a fiat with registration no 1 and i think it is with him still in his house named after his first win horse royal touch. Later he switched stable to rrb and jagadish from rrb moved to mam.

It surprising that all to jockeys from barclay, shinde, jagadish, and aslam ended their career with mam. Prince Khartoum was the first horse to win the Bangalore derby to win the Indian derby and later many rrb horses went on to win the same. Comanche and Manitou belong to different age group owned by ranjit v bhat. this owner won 3 consecutive (hat trick) Indian derby’s.

Sharmaji :

Thanks for the interesting posting. I am a follower of Trainer Rashid Byramjee right from his Horse Commanche. When I was in Bombay I had a good friend Mr. Aziz Currimbhai - Racing correspondent of Mid Day. He used smoke Cigar

I used to call him Hello Winston Churchil what do you like today. He was also a good friend of Rashid Byramjee.

I am aware of whatever you have mentioned  about him. But indeed a pleasant surprise for me to know he is holding Doctorate in conditioning of Horses. You are the first person to gibe me the news.  What a great personality and with all humility he never used his title in public.

The way he conditioned Sweet Memories itself a testimony for his impeccable ability.

When Byramjee was in Bombay Racing correspondent of Times of India 0 Pegasus (Cecil Hendrics) used take interview and Rashid gused give him list of Horses in trim condition in training. No other trainer used divulge similar information to the public.

Great trainer indeed  Our Govt. could have given him a National Award to him for his achievement. Somebody like your good self or many of us jointly should inform the Govt to consider a National Award to him. Racing is also a sport. He deserves in every respect.

India Race.com also can take a lead in this noble act on behalf of the public interested in Racing.

Thanks Sharmaji for your posting.

I am a big fan of byramji I want also share my few memories wd all of you in 80's I was working in veterinary hospital of HRC whenever classic races ran in Hyderabad he use to come to take part & whenever his hrs won he use to visit veterinary to watch his hrs & on every winng of his hrs he has given 100 bugs to our each staff & asks our whear abouts I have seen a great human nature rather than as a trainer. Coming to the point I rated his filly DIVINE LIGHT is best till now her record was not broken at top wt in 1600mts the record is still there only STAR SUPERIOR came closely & missed by fraction of seconds

@ Glasgow Prince

Just to get chronology right, if you don't mind.

Topmost's Indian Derby of 1974 was seven years BEFORE Track Lightning's Indian Derby of 1981; not LATER. a slip of the keys, I guess.

@ Ruchi

As per THE TURF - All India Racing Record, Pendragon was 9/1 on the books and paid Rs. 40/- for win on Tote. Also, he was Horse No. 6 (NOT 4).

Nice write up Mr Sharma. I am a big fan Rashid Byramji and remember all the horses you have mentioned. Bombay had some talented trainers like SM Shah, Pondole and Moses. Rashid will bring a horse from Bangalore and beat them all. Rashid Byramji undoubtedly the best trainer in Indian Racing.

Pessi Shroff and S.Padmanaban has the traces of Rashid Byramji.

@ Mr. Sharma

RRB shifted to Bangalore some time 1978 (Not in 65), because

Most of owners was offering their horses RRB for training then RWITC limited the number of horses to be trained by any trainer ( may be 80) and also included clause that last one to go first then RRB said that without younger horses a trainer can not survive in racing and then he shifted to Bangalore, rest is history.

This I am sure of this because I entered racing in Aug 1974 ( Mysore).

My giving Goli has no relevance to this topic

My mistake MOHAWK was actually ridden by Wally.

PENDRAGON was with Sam or DM hill it was card no (4) that you cannot refute as it was SUNS number in strong aspect and a Goli bet for me .

So sir Goli bets from those days were there,in fact immediately after VENUS DE MILOS invitation cup win (card no 16,the next race was win and cashed by another Goli PUCK WICK,a grey horse, card number (3) ridden by A woods.if I am not mistaken it was trained either by McPherson or Laurie fownes.

Mc pherson the Calcutta based trainer lost his life in the air crash at BangaloreAnother upcoming rider A Waheed also lost his life in same crash

Indian record

M y mistake it was MOHAWK which was ridden by Wally .It was a hatruck derby for Byramji and Ranjit v Bhatt

And yes PENDRAGON was trained by DM hill ,my mistake

Yes VENUS DE MILO beat BUCK PASSER. In the invi at Bangalore in 1969.VENUS was trained by Ladies specialist UTRAM SINGH and ridden by the pocket dynamic BREN DUFFY

But fact is PENDRAGON WON WITH FERRIS and if I say that I backed both the golis PENDRAGON and VENIS DE MILO,yes from those goilis were given

You believe or not it's left to you Mr record in fact after the invitation of 1969 the next race was win by a grey PICKWICK start to finish,at 20/1 ridden by jockey A woods and trained by McPherson or Laurie fownes I don't recall.

VENUS paid RS 69 on tote for fiver.

Just for information.

Track Lightning won the Indian Derby in a 4 way photo finish beating Christoffe, Happy Landing and Furioso. Richileu lost to Topmost in the Indian Derby some seven years later.

Manitou was ridden to victory in the Indian Derby as well as the Invitation Cup at Hyderabad by Vasant Shinde.

Foy did not win any Invitation Cup. Wally Swinburn was astride Prince Khartoum when he won the Indian Derby.

Lynn Deas's "HORSE RACING IN INDIA i- A Royal Legacy"  is  comprehensive history of India racing published in 2016.

On last year's Bangalore summer derby day "THE LIFE AND TIMES OF R.R. BYRAMJI - A Master of His Craft" by Major Srinivas Nargolkar (Retd.) was released

Unfortunately, only books punters read are Cole, BOL or Original Vel !

@ Ruchi

PRINCE KHARTOUM won Invitation Cup at Guindy and NOT Mumbai. He was ridden by Wally Swinburn and NOT Foy.

PENDRAGON did NOT beat Buck Passer in Bangalore Derby. They were born in different years and BOTH won Bangalore Derby.

MANITOU was NEVER ridden by Wally Swinburn.

Best if you stick to finding 'golis' for your patrons.

SHARMAJI

You have omitted the name of Sandy Barclay amongst the great riders who ride for Byramji,Barclay was responsible for the narrow victory of TRACK LIGHTNING in a 4 way photo finish.TRACK LIGHTNING started to hang s d it was Sandy Barclays brilliance that he managed to Win the derby beating RICHLEUI in a 4 horse finish.

TRACK LIGHTNING was owned by Khataus. How can we even forget FOY who rode PRINCE KHARTOUM.to victory in invitation cup at Mumbai and the rank outsider PENDRAGON,ridden by FERRIS who won the Bangalore derby ( card no 4) at 20/1 beating the red hot fav BUCK PASSER.

COMMAMCHE beat RED COCKADE who was thought to be invincible and then his derby winner was MANITOU ridden by Wally swinburn.

MANITOU in fact won the Bangalore derby the day when all full time riders went on strike and apprentice boys road.MANOTOU was ridden by P bhosle the father of the later champion B Prakash.
