Forty Year Old Record Broken By Multitude

By S C Sharma | 23-Jul-2019

After more than forty years the 7 yr old MULTITUDE broke the 18 wins record of Squanderer, one of all time great horse  on Indian turf, by winning today the 5th race The Harry the horse cup  seven furlong race at Kolkata .   By Multidimensional—Haedi this horse recorded his 19th win in 38th attempt and surpass the 18 win record of Squanderer and now heading to touch or surpass the record of Elusive Pimpernel of 22 wins, if he maintains the same level of fitness, form and zest for racing.

I wished trainer Vijay Singh good luck well in advance in horse talk  yesterday and now wish to congratulate him for all his good and hard work. No doubt there is no match or comparison to Elusive Pimpernel and Squanderer because both these horses  were trained by the legend R R Byramji and achieved the number of wins to their credit by loosing only one race in their entire racing career.  But on paper the 19 win record of Multitude also cannot be erased and will be remembered for long long because  to  maintain the form and fitness till the age of seven  is also not an easy task, more so in all 38 runs Multitude unplaced on board only twice and that too finished fifth. 19 wins, 10 times seconds and 7  times finished 3rd and 4th is not a common phenomena. Today I noted the body weight of Multitude was 452 kg which is his best suited weight in which he always performs good and as expected. After entering straight the 19th victory of Multitude sighted much much before the winning post and he easily surpassed the front runners Lincoln and Amorous White and held on gamely the little  chellange of Big Orange without much anxiety.

Multitude is the most consistent runner at Kolkata and if trainer Vijay Singh maintains his same form, fitness and body weight and plan his future runs in sprint races, particularly terms races more so in his age group means 4-5 year old and upwards than we may hear more and more successes of this horse in near future. The owner team of Ameeta Mehra and others are very lucky to get such good and consistent result from this horse and this horse proved really a minting stake money machine for them. Trainer Vijay Singh deserves all appreciation and kudos for this hard work and I wish him many more consistent results from his stable and from this horse.

Attention. Indian _ Turf _Record. Thank you for acknowledging my post, and correcting the names of the 2 events given by me (regarding Own Opinion).

In his post dated 25-7-2019  11.22 am, Kolramsri stated -- "In 1978, Own Opinion won Nilgiris 2000 Guineas, Nilgiris Derby and Bangalore 2000 Guineas. In 1979 Own Opinion won Bangalore Derby ......" That is absolutely correct. On 9 Dec 1978, Own Opinion won Bangalore 2000 Guineas beating Ajaya. On 27 Jan 1979 Own Opinion won Bangalore Derby (then called Arc de Triomphe) beating Red Chieftan. Perhaps, if Kolramsri had referred to the race names Nilgiris Colts' Trial Stakes (instead of Nilgiris 2000 Guineas) and Arc de Triomphe (Bangalore Derby) as they were then called, there would have been no doubts.

Stakes earned is a temporary record. When Squanderer won over Rs. 10 lakhs in stakes, he became India's first equine millionnaire and highest stakes earner ever. Today, at least a hundred horses earn Rs. 1 million in a year. Squanderer is so admired and respected. He has earned it not because of his stakes earnings but because of the races he won. It is unlikely that Desert God's earnings  will stand as a record for ten years. This is in no way meant to detract anything from Desert God who is very, very fine horse but just to put stakes earned in proper perspective.

Why not try to compare with coral gables or onnu onnu onnu or other horses mentioned by knowledgeable HT folks here.

Article is incomplete and in a hurry and needless comparison with great horses

All records are fine and some outstanding horses from Squaderer,Elusive Pimpernal, Own Opinion etc but all forgot about Desert God record stakes earning which may take a very long, long time to be broken.

MIDSUMMER STAR (ch 1973 Midsummer Night II - Subtle Star). Ran four times in Mumbai winter season 1975-76, won 2 races and twice second to stablemate Squanderer. In Bangalore summer season of 1976, two wins from 5 starts. In Mumbai winter season of 1976-77, 3 wins (hat-trick) from 6 starts. In Bangalore summer season of 1977, he was to run in early June but was withdrawn.  In mid-June, he ran in Class I Madras Gold Cup which had 21 runners. At the end of backstretch, he fell down, broke his back and died. That was only race in which Vasant Shinde rode him. He was fortunate to escape unhurt.

The number of wins shown earlier -- ONNU ONNU ONNU (34), CORAL GABLES (31), OWN OPINION (27) and ROYAL TERN (26) are correct. They have subsequently been verified with official record. Onnu Onnu Onnu raced till 8; Coral Gables till 12; both Own Opinion and Royal Tern raced till 6.

Squanderer's only defeat came about in Bangalore Colts' Trial Stakes and NOT Bangalore Summer Derby

@ Aravind

Can you mention anything wrong in Kolramsri's statement ?

I didn't see "SQUANDEROR" run as i first entered the racecourse in 1983 .Was fortunate to witness the career of "ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL" which was the best horse i have seen on Indian turf during my racing career as a "Punter" spanning almost 3 decades. Comparison of "Multitude" running in Kolkata to "Squanderor" and "Elusive Pimpernel" is foolish and absurd. What was the competition that "Multitude" faces in Kolkata racing in comparison to Western and South India racing (Mumbai ,Pune, Bangalore) ?Kudo's to "Multitude" for maintaining its winning streak but by no means is this race horse any comparison to either Squanderor or Elusive Pimpernel.

@ Suresh,

I couldn't resist the urge to correct you, since you are talking out of your hat, regarding Kolkata based horses!

By the way, being a seasoned punter and racegoer yourself, nay, a novice I guess, have you ever heard of the wonder horse ADJUDICATE?

Arguably, India's best horse at the moment!

Do you know where Adjudicate is from and who does he belong to.? A Mumbai / Bangalore owner, I suppose !

Think before you open your goddamned mouth.

In 1978, Own Opinion won Nilgris 2000 guineas, Nilgris Derby and Bangalore 2000 guineas. In 1979 Own Opinion won Bangalore Derby and Bangalore St. Leger, Indian Turf Invitation, and Indian St.Leger.The only classic won by Own Opinion, in its home turf was South India St. Leger. Own Opinion finished second to Red Chieftan in South India Derby Stakes. Earlier Red Chieftan ridden by Smith finished second to Enter The Red. in south India 2000 guineas. After this, M.A.M severed connection with Jockey Smith, suspecting foul play. It was sweet revenge for M.A.M to allow Red Chieftan to win and defeat Enter the Red, which finished a poor third behind Own Opinion., in the S.I.Derby stakes. Own opinion never had any health issue during 1978 and 1979. Apart from this Both R.C and O.O won the prestigious QE2 cup in Kolkatta 1979/1980 and 1980/1981 respectively.

One more point to your attention.

If Squanderer and Elusive Pimpernal were allowed to run till they become 7 or 8 year olds in Calcutta consistently, they would have set an unattainable  record of 150 wins each.

Kindly consider many factors before you jump the gun.

Compairing Mutitude to some of India’s great Squanderer and Elusive is a shame.  The dont breathe in the same street. Speaking of horses in Cal and Mysore is a waste of time any 4th class horse of Bang and Mumbai can win in class 1 in these centers. Dandified the Cal champion couldn’t win a lemon and spoon race away from this center. Writing senseless articles is a waste of our time.

I am the senior most guy in this forum attending Races from 1958 when  I was 11 years old.

I was present in the paddock at Chennai and seen Trainer Sam Hill, Jockeys Shankar, Jagdeesh, Dixon, Dix, Shinde, Umrigar and others.

I dont think the writer SC Sharma would have been born when I attended Races in 1958. However, I would be looking younger to Sharma even today.

Dandified has won 23 times in Kolkata. Both Coral Cables and Onu Onu might have won more since both ran till 10 years of age.

I don't think so both Own Opinion and Royal Tern won as stated. Own Opinion had a set back and missed Madras classics and Red Chieftain won the Derby there. After winning the Invitation, it went to Japan to run Japan cup and finished 7th to break Indian record time for 2400 mtrs and was retired to stud.So too Royal Tern after Invitation ran for another year or so and retired to stud.

Both Squanderer and Midsummer Star were from the same crop and were trained by R R Byramji. The former was owned by Mr Ranjit Bhat and Mr Indru Mirchandani while the latter a got-abroad, was owned by Mr F A and K A Irani. Squanderer (Voloroso - Milky Way) beat Midsummer Star in both the races in which they confronted each other. Squanderer lost only once in his career and that was in the Bangalore Summer Derby to Red Satin and King Of Seers.

Squanderer and Elusive Pimpernel were all time greats and I was fortunate to have witnessed their exploits, especially the famous win of Sqnaderer over Certainty, an imported mare that left the onlookers dazed.

IT WAS the first race of the afternoon and there were only four horses in the race the third runner was STRONG TIES and I am unable to recall the 4 th horse

I think it was ridden by MCGRATH and SQUANDERER BY JAGDISH

When comparing individual achievements shd take total classics won and winning every race by   not goes down even once to same age group horses is what to be considered. In that case Elusive pimpernel and squandarer still the best and record holders. They didn't boug down in their group horses in same weight and whatever distances. Only time they lose coz of difference in handicap. Such was training skill by RRB. Present trainers except Shroff no one comes nearer to RRB.

I fully endorse your view that S C Sharma is now wriing for being noticed, and to gain some popularity on Horse Talk. His contents lack authenticated facts and reflect his self-acclaim to be a racing genius. I feel that the only way he can be pursuaded to stop such posts is to avoid engaging into debates with him.

SQUANDERER was third to Red Satin and King of Seers (3 lengths, neck) on his FOURTH start. He won his remaining 15 races and that is one record which is still standing to his name.

I do not understand why you all are crying on the post of S.C.Sharma what ever you are saying he had already posted in his post that the (No doubt there is no match or comparison to Elusive Pimpernel and Squanderer But on paper the 19 win record of Multitude also cannot be erased and will be remembered for long long because  to  maintain the form and fitness till the age of seven) So he has given more weight to maintain the form and fitness he did not say about the more capability of MULTITUDE so santosh ji he is not writing for write for the sake of getting noticed.

please note his main point Multitude is the most consistent runner at Kolkata and if trainer Vijay Singh maintains his same form, fitness and body weight and plan his future runs in sprint races, particularly terms races more so in his age group means 4-5 year old and upwards than we may hear more and more successes of this horse in near future.

In fact he was trying to point out  to keep note of MULTITUDE future running age group means 4-5 year old and upwards.

I hope now yoy all with great knowlegde should talk about future running of the hore here instead of poing out the more records of other horses which are well known to you and others.

Ruchi i feel your posting is the jock of the day as you have not read the comments correctly.

Godzilla he naver compair with the likes of Squanderer and Elusive Pimpernal read the post again.

Bluebubbletron yes you are right Dandified won 26 races from 40 starts and was a Champ on Kolkata turf.

As i feel all other horses have retired and MULTITUDE may do more racing hence his posing is worth to note  & not to criticise.

You appear to be  a younger person and a keen enthusiast but please post  after due authentication of facts . The most number of wins in our country was achieved by a horse owned by MR M A M RAMASWAMY,who had  fifty plus wins, around 25 years ago, i do not remeber the mane and i cant climb into my attic to dig out the records now.

There have been other horse like CORAL GABLES,ROMANTIC COUNT, etc with more than 30 wins.Ask MR M R RAO of hyderabad whose best horse ONU ONU ONU had  25  wins

MULTITUDE is lijke EVESHAM another kolkotta based horse. Both these horses used to run against the same oppostion, always they used to be TOP WEIGHT and in turns when the connection MAKE UP the race it used to WIN. Both these horses were utter flop when they went outstation.

What is a record ? It is something which no one else has achieved. Squanderer's 18 wins in his personal record and it has been bettered by several horses.

FUTURE FAME has won 55 races in India; ONNU ONNU ONNU was first past the post on 35 occasions; CORAL GABLES has 31 wins to his credit; OWN OPINION scored 27 times; .ROYAL TERN and DANDIFIED posted 26 wins each;  ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL hoisted winning flag 22 times. These are some examples from top of the hat. There must be several other horses with more than 18 wins.

This in no way is meant to dis-credit MULTITUDE. But, please, please, let us not lose our perspective and proclaim empty records.
