   Excellent memory. Well done. You are talking of Bombay races of 16 March 1972 and all the details you have mentioned are correct. Even the Treble Pool dividend you got 3 out of 4 digits correct. The exact dividend was Rs.8,741 !

I enjoyed the riding of Karan Singh on KJK Irani trained Bhagyashali. I won treble pool on that day about Rs. 8410(exact figure not known) by combo. Bhagyashali, Freedon Lover(Namdev) and Sweet Melody(shanker). That day there was aggitation in Bombay track by winner long shot Munnings(Locke) out 3 entries of D C Jarvis. Please correct if any error. Thanks.

    I am sorry that I cannot throw light on your specific question.

    Karan Singh started his riding career in Western India. His first winner was STEELLA D'ITALIA trained by K.H. Irani (This is from memory. There were many trainers with surname Irani at that time in Western India).

    He came into his own after moving to Hyderabad to ride for trainer M.B. Mangalorkar and rode over 1000 winners in his career. He was Champion Jockey at Pune in 1970 and 1971 and then for 10 consecutive years at Hyderabad  Monsoon from 1972 to 1981. In 1982 and 1983 he was Champion Jockey at Mysore. He also won Bangalore Winter  Championship three times (.1977, 1978 and 1979) and Bangalore Summer Championship in 1976 and 1977. His last ride was in 1987. (I do not have authentic details of 1960s).

     He rode winners of 23 Classics, all of them in Southern India. Yes, he was a powerful rider who excelled in coming from behind. However, I did not see much of his riding and cannot comment on how good he was.

Attn Indian _ Turf _Record. It would be apt to read, as also won Mysore 2000 guineas, beating Nicolette on the track and lost the race later for testing positive. Well connected was ridden by L D Silva ( training now in Hyderabad). News of Nicolette got the race was received by us during the early part of Madras Season. Well connected finished second to Aristocrat in the Mysore Derby. All from memory

My uncle taught me horse racing at my tender age and he use tell me lot of stories about jockeys. One among them was about jockey Karan Singh.

Did jockey Karan had a unique way of riding by piping the horse on the post on number of occasions ? It seems he will keep the horse dead last from there improves to third position near bend and win the verdict on photo finish ? Is Karan so clever in judging the pace ?

Is it true or made up stories sir ?

      His sire was succesfull sire having produced Classic winners Sweet Memories, Muffin, etc. His dam was half-sister to Invitation Cup winner Loyal Prince.

Racing Career

55 starts over 6 years, 11 wins (1100 to 1600 m), 19 places, Rs. 3,87,71.

Owned by Mr. & Mrs. M. Ct. Muthiah

Trained by Charles initially, then S.J.K. Irani, Charles again and finally R.N. Patel.

Won on debut, first race of Bangalore 1978-79 winter season. Also won Hyderabad Silver Vase, twice, Chakravarthi Desikachar Memorial Cup, R.C.T.C. Cup, R.W.I.T.C. Cup, Gulbarga Cup and Ardent Knight Cup. Placed 2nd in Sprinters' Cup, Gr.1 (to Carnival) and 3rd in Arc de Triomphe, Gr.1 (to Everynsky and Valour) and Governor's Trophy, Gr.3 (to My Opinion and Imperial King).

Also won Mysore 2000 Guineas, Gr.3 (beating Nicolette by distance) and placed 2nd in Mysore Derby, Gr.2  but disqualified for testing positive.

Stud Career

Retired to Clive Stud, Bangalore in 1985. Put out of stud in August 1996.

Sire from 11 crops of 19 named foals, 18 starters, 14 winners, 58 winners including Peace of Mind (7 wins), True Connection, Rednimrah, Mail on Sunday, etc.

During 70's or 80's I don't remember clearly, there was a horse named Well Connected. When ever it ran it was day's best for many. I remember it had very good winning record.

       Quite possible that I have misinterpretated the rule and hence sought  the clarification from Dharmesh who comes across as a sound and logical person.

       Maybe, I paid more importance to the "On a day .." part of rule. Yesterday, there were three other previous start winners (Majestic Warrior, St Andrews and Rhapsody) who had shorter gaps than Clark Kent. So Dharmesh's logic in picking Clark Kent will be interesting.

You may have misinterpreted the rule cited by Dharmesh. Clark Kent and Rhapsody ran in different races, hence the rule is not applicable. I am sure such examples are quite frequent in races and you will be able to hunt them out from the records maintained by you ( This season). Hope you can share with us.Thanks.

      You have quoted the rule -- " On any day, choose the horse which has the least number of days since its last win."  By that rule, Clark Kent does not qualify because Rhapsody had won much after him. Perhaps, you were aware of it but ignored it because Rhapsody was running in a Gr.1 race. Obliged if you can clarify finer points of applying the rule.

Pune Derby for Sultan Sulaiman. It has excellant reccord eventhough has run in two races only but it beat all top class horses in same set.

1.15 #3 GODS PLAN has impressed in mock race and this half bred to Glittering Gold & Rikki Tikki Tawi should run a bold race. 

1.45 #3 MYSTIC BAY has been running well in stronger contests than he encounters on this occasion and the well bred colt is expected to prove too classy for his rivals. 

2.15 #5 BELGRAVIA just needed her last run in a fair field and could make a race of it. 

2.45 #1 CLARK KENT held on gamely over track and trip latest and warrants plenty of respect in his bid to follow up, the 5kg claims helps. 

3.15 #8 HEADWAY is bang in form and the combo is looking for a a hat-trick. The gelding is yet to lose on this track. Strong fancy. 

3.45 #4 INTENSE STYLIST won in comfortable fashion on his latest start and is well worth another try at this level. 

4.30 Unexposed #9 RHAPSODY looks the pick of the recent winners and has more to offer over a mile and a quarter and rates as a decent EW bet. 

5.15 #3 AUSPICIOUS failed to justify favouritism on debut over 6f  but the experience gained is unlikely to have been lost on him and he could feasibly gain compensation this time with Suraj Narredu in saddle.

       This is a result-based inference. In race no 62 this difficult to pronounce horse SACHERTORTE  won over EN SABHA  NUR by 1 1/2 lengths. This 2nd placed one won when ran next time beating POLYNEICES which in my opinion is a good horse in that handicap. So this Sachertore should prevail in this difficult race. If the connections think that  Clark Kent is too good they wouldn't strain Suraj. This is a racing syndicate.

1. Headway - Firstly running in higher class. I dont think can match strides with few smart horses who ran in better company such as Flaming Martini, Lesrel, King Khalil & Excellent Gold. 

2. Iron Age - Is the best in the lot who beat most of them, Intense Stylist coming with 2 back to back wins will give a fight but should place for sure.

3. Victorious Sermon - By Whatsthescript. Has a decent chance to finish on board, I strongly go with Wizard of Stocks and next best Rapsody. I don't remember any Arazan or Surfrider progeny winning any derby's?? For me Suleiman and Trouvaille is out of question.

Iron Age and St Andrews are both rated at 107.  Yet, in accordance with the terms, the latter is set to carry 3.5kg less than the former.

Iron Age no doubt beat St Andrews in Race No.78 at level weights, and although it is an improving 4year old, I believe St Andrews, due to weight advantage and same ratings, has the credentials to beat Iron Age.   In fact, I expect even Clymene or Perfect Star to beat Iron Age.
